Can couch co-op players join friends online?
Yes, in Minecraft Dungeons II. Players together on one device can play locally while joining other players online. That mixed setup is the key difference for groups split between a living room and remote locations: the first game’s couch co-op was offline only, according to Mojang’s feature article.
Mojang Design Director Laura de Llorens described the change in an official Xbox podcast interview: “One thing that is new that we didn’t have in Dungeons I is that you can now mix couch co-op and online play, meaning that you can be here playing with your friend on the couch and your other friends are somewhere else, and you can play with them.”
How do players join the same party?
Use a party code
Mojang says an eight-character party code lets friends join across platforms, whether the party is in its lobby or already in an ongoing game. This gives players a direct way to connect without relying on everyone being on the same device or platform.

Use matchmaking
Matchmaking can find other players or fill open party slots. The official sources describe these options but do not specify platform-by-platform setup screens or steps, so consult the game’s current in-game prompts for the controls and flow on your device.
Plan around a four-player party
The official launch article describes Minecraft Dungeons II as playable solo or in online or couch co-op for up to four players. That four-player maximum is a feature limit, not a claim about how many players typically join or how reliably matchmaking fills a party.

What changes about online hosting?
In the original, Mojang says the party leader’s machine hosted the online session. In Minecraft Dungeons II, Mojang says sessions use dedicated servers and that the game chooses a server with players’ ping in mind. That changes the hosting model: the leader’s hardware is no longer the stated host for the session.
This comparison describes Mojang’s account of the games’ infrastructure, not an independent measurement of latency or stability. The official sources do not establish comparative figures for connection quality, matchmaking success or session reliability.

Can you continue your hero on a friend’s device?
Mojang says hero data is stored online. You can sign in to your platform account on a friend’s device and carry on with the same hero where that platform supports account sign-in. The qualification matters: the feature is account- and platform-dependent, and the official description does not promise identical support on every device or platform.
Do you need to play the first game?
No. Minecraft’s official FAQ says the original is not required before starting Minecraft Dungeons II. The sequel supports solo play as well as co-op; returning players may recognize references, but prior play is not a prerequisite.

Where and when is Minecraft Dungeons II available?
Mojang’s launch announcement says the game released on September 29, 2026. Its official FAQ lists Windows, Steam, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. The cited material does not establish local controller counts, platform-specific online subscription requirements or regional availability details.
