Choose Minecraft Dungeons for dungeon-crawler combat and gear customization; choose Minecraft Legends for strategy built around gathering, building, and leading mobs. Both support four-player cooperative play, but Legends also has a separate team PvP mode. The better fit depends on what your group wants to do together.
How the gameplay differs
Minecraft Dungeons: fight through action-adventure levels
Minecraft Dungeons takes inspiration from classic dungeon crawlers. Its central loop is combat: use melee and ranged attacks, equip armor and items, and customize your character with enchantments. That makes it the more direct choice if you want to focus on fighting and improving your loadout.
Minecraft Legends: gather, build, and command
Minecraft Legends is strategic action. You explore the Overworld, gather resources, build, make allies, and lead friendly mobs in battles to protect it. Combat matters, but the experience also asks you to make decisions about resources, structures, and units.
How co-op works in each game
| Co-op detail | Minecraft Dungeons | Minecraft Legends |
|---|---|---|
| Campaign group size | Up to four players. | Solo or with up to three friends. |
| Play formats | Online or couch co-op. | Campaign co-op; the cited Xbox Wire description does not specify local or couch co-op. |
| Resource and gathering rules | Not stated on the cited official Dungeons page. | Resources are shared among players; each player has their own allays to gather and build. |
| Difficulty when players join | Not stated on the cited official Dungeons page. | Difficulty does not scale upward as players join. |
The official Dungeons page confirms up to four players online or in couch co-op. Xbox Wire’s April 18, 2023 Legends overview describes its campaign as playable solo or with up to three friends, and explains its shared resources, individual allays, and non-scaling difficulty. These are different co-op arrangements even though both games can accommodate a four-person group.

- Options Personalize your character, then fight up-close and personal with melee swings, hang back with ranged attacks, or tank your way through swarms of mobs, by heavy armor
Legends also has a separate PvP mode
Legends’ competitive mode is distinct from its campaign. Xbox Wire describes public matchmade PvP games in which two teams of four try to destroy the opposing base. If your group wants both a cooperative story campaign and team-versus-team play, that is a documented difference between the games. The cited Dungeons sources do not establish whether Dungeons has a competitive mode, so they do not support a claim that it does or does not.
Which game should you choose?
| Choose | If your group prefers |
|---|---|
| Minecraft Dungeons | Dungeon-crawler-style combat, character gear and enchantments, and online or couch co-op. |
| Minecraft Legends | Strategic planning, resource gathering, building, directing mobs, a cooperative campaign, or team PvP. |
This is a recommendation based on the games’ described features, not a measured ranking of quality or fun. If you are choosing for a group, start with the activity everyone is most eager to repeat: fighting and tuning equipment points toward Dungeons; coordinating resources, structures, and units points toward Legends.
