For the strongest standard setup, surround it with the correct bookshelf arrangement so the table can offer level-30 choices. The mysterious words on its buttons are not a secret spell language: they are glyphs from the Standard Galactic Alphabet (SGA), a substitution alphabet created for the Commander Keen games. You can map the symbols to Latin letters, but the resulting words do not predict which enchantment the table will apply.

What an enchanting table does
An enchanting table applies enchantments to eligible items in exchange for experience levels and lapis lazuli. The table evaluates the item, nearby active bookshelves, the player’s available experience, and the game’s enchantment rules before displaying three choices. Those choices are randomized within the rules for that item; the decorative glyph text is not an additional clue.

The table is useful for weapons, tools, armor and several other eligible items. It is not a universal upgrade station: an item must be accepted by the table, and the available enchantments depend on that item’s type and enchantability. If a desired enchantment is absent, changing the item, the surrounding setup or the offered roll is more useful than trying to interpret the glyphs.
How to craft an enchanting table
Materials
| Material | Amount | Where it is used |
|---|---|---|
| Book | 1 | Top-center slot of the crafting recipe |
| Diamond | 2 | Left and right positions in the middle row |
| Obsidian | 4 | Bottom row and the remaining middle-row position |
Crafting steps
- Open a crafting table with a 3-by-3 grid.
- Place one book in the top-center cell.
- Place two diamonds in the middle-left and middle-right cells.
- Place four obsidian blocks in the remaining middle cell and all three bottom cells.
- Move the enchanting table to your inventory.
A book is the ordinary book item, not a written book. Obsidian must be mined or otherwise obtained as obsidian blocks; a different dark stone will not substitute in the recipe. Once crafted, place the table where you can stand at its interface and where bookshelves can be positioned around it.

How to build the maximum bookshelf setup
The standard enchanting-table cap is reached with 15 active bookshelves. When that arrangement is detected, the table can display choices reaching the maximum standard enchantment level of 30. Adding more shelves does not raise that cap.
The one-block air gap
Every shelf must be separated from the table by exactly one block of air. The air gap is part of the activation geometry: placing a shelf directly against the table, or inserting a solid block in the gap, prevents that shelf from contributing. The shelves do not have to form a particular decorative room, but the path from table to shelf must remain open under the normal bookshelf rules.

A practical layout
A simple arrangement is a ring around the table with one empty block between the table and the shelves. You can build a one-block-high ring, use shelves on a second level, or leave an opening for access as long as the required shelves remain in valid positions. Count only shelves that the table recognizes as active; decorative shelves outside the effective area do not improve the available level range.

Checking whether shelves are working
- Confirm that each contributing shelf is a bookshelf block, not a different storage or decorative block.
- Look for a clear one-block air space between the table and the shelf.
- Remove torches, carpets, slabs, trapdoors or other blocks that fill the gap if the game treats them as obstructing it.
- Stand at the table and reopen its interface after changing the room; the offered levels should update when the setup is recognized.
- Do not spend materials trying to exceed the 15-shelf cap; extra shelves have no effect on the standard table.
If the highest offer remains below the expected range, inspect the geometry first. A shelf that looks nearby can still be inactive because it is too far away, blocked, or placed in a position the table does not count.
How the three enchantment choices work
Insert an eligible item into the left slot and lapis lazuli into the lapis slot. The table then presents three offers, each with its own displayed experience-level requirement and lapis cost. The basic workflow can consume one to three lapis lazuli, depending on the offer. You must have both the required lapis and enough experience levels to select an offer.
The displayed level is an input to the selection calculation, not a promise of a named enchantment. The three slots use different level calculations, and the final result is randomized within the item’s applicable enchantment rules. A higher displayed number generally represents a more powerful opportunity, but it does not guarantee a particular enchantment, maximum rank, or combination.

What to compare before selecting an offer
| Comparison point | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Required player level | Determines whether you can pay for the offer now. |
| Lapis cost | Determines whether you have enough lapis for that slot. |
| Item being enchanted | Controls which enchantment categories are legal for the item. |
| Enchantment category shown by the interface | Provides the ordinary in-game description of what the offer is likely to emphasize. |
| Randomized additional enchantments | The result can include extra compatible enchantments selected by the game’s rules. |
Do not compare the SGA strings in the three buttons as though they were spell names. They are interface flavor text and do not encode the outcome. Compare the item, the visible offer information, your level and lapis supply, and the enchantment rules instead.
After you choose
- Verify that the item is the one you intend to spend resources on.
- Check the required level and lapis amount for the preferred slot.
- Select the offer and collect the enchanted item.
- Inspect the resulting enchantment list in your inventory before discarding or combining the item.
Choosing one offer consumes that roll for the item. If none of the three choices is useful, enchant a different eligible item or use another permitted way to obtain enchantments rather than attempting to decipher the button text.
What the enchanting-table “language” really is
The Standard Galactic Alphabet
The runes are the Standard Galactic Alphabet, commonly abbreviated SGA. It is a substitution-style writing system: each glyph corresponds to a Latin letter. In Minecraft, it is used as a visual font for the enchanting-table interface, not as a spoken language, grammar system or separate gameplay language.
Rank #4
American game designer Tom Hall created the original alphabet for the Commander Keen series. Minecraft later adopted the glyph style for its enchantment screen; historical records of the early enchantment interface place that presentation in October 2011. The connection explains why the symbols look like a readable alphabet while still feeling alien in the game.

Why the words look meaningful
Because the characters map cleanly to ordinary letters, a player can recognize repeated shapes and convert a displayed string into Latin text. That conversion produces short English words or phrases used as atmospheric interface text. The words are selected for flavor and are randomized; they are not labels generated from the enchantment hidden behind the button.
Can you translate the runes?
Yes, in the narrow sense that SGA glyphs can be transliterated back to Latin letters. You need an SGA-to-Latin alphabet chart or a decoder that performs that one-to-one substitution. Read the symbols in order, replace each with its corresponding letter, and preserve spaces when the interface displays them.
Best Value
Translation stops there. The decoded phrase does not reveal the enchantment that will be applied, the item’s hidden enchantability value, or the additional enchantments that may be selected. Treat a translation as an easter egg, not as a prediction method. The useful information remains the item, the offer’s visible level and lapis requirement, and the enchantment description supplied by the interface.
Common translation mistakes
- Assuming a repeated SGA word always means the same enchantment. The text is randomized flavor text.
- Reading the runes as a pronunciation guide. SGA supplies letter substitutions, not a separate spoken language.
- Using the decoded phrase to choose between slots. Slot selection should be based on the offer and your goal, not the decorative wording.
- Confusing a translated phrase with a guarantee of the final enchantment set. Compatible additional enchantments are still selected by the game’s rules.
A resource-efficient enchanting routine
Use this sequence whenever you are preparing an item:
- Gather the item, lapis lazuli and enough experience levels for the offer you intend to use.
- Check that the table’s bookshelf arrangement is active and that the room has the required open gaps.
- Place the item in the table and read all three offers before clicking.
- Reject any offer whose category does not fit the item’s role or your planned build.
- Among useful offers, weigh the level and lapis cost against the value of the item and your available resources.
- Select the offer, then verify the final enchantment list on the resulting item.
This routine separates information that is actually predictive from decoration. The table’s item rules and displayed costs help you make a decision; the SGA phrase does not.
Light and building considerations
An enchanting table emits light level 7. That is a modest illumination source, so it can contribute to visibility in a compact enchanting room, but it should not be treated as the room’s only lighting plan. You can integrate the table into a library, workshop or hidden base while preserving the one-block air paths required by the active shelves.
Plan access before completing the bookshelf ring. A visually attractive wall can accidentally fill the air gap or make the table difficult to reach. Leave a clear approach to the table and recheck the offers after remodeling.
Troubleshooting checklist
The table will not craft
- Recount the recipe: one book, two diamonds and four obsidian.
- Check that the materials occupy the correct 3-by-3 crafting positions.
- Make sure the dark blocks are obsidian rather than a visually similar block.
No enchantment offer appears
- Confirm that the inserted object is an item the table can enchant.
- Place lapis lazuli in the lapis slot.
- Check that you have the experience levels required by at least one displayed offer.
The highest level is lower than expected
- Inspect every shelf for the one-block air gap.
- Remove blocks that obstruct the space between shelf and table.
- Count only active shelves in valid positions; decorative or distant shelves do not contribute.
- Remember that the standard table’s maximum is fixed; adding shelves beyond the active maximum cannot increase it.
The runes seem to contradict the result
They do not describe the result. SGA text is randomized interface flavor, so a decoded phrase that sounds unrelated to the enchantment is normal. Use the item, offer details and final enchantment list as the authoritative information.
Quick Recap
What to remember
- The crafting recipe is one book, two diamonds and four obsidian.
- Fifteen active bookshelves with the required open spacing unlock the standard level-30 option range.
- Three offers are generated from the item’s rules and randomized calculations; displayed levels and lapis costs are requirements, not guarantees.
- The enchanting-table symbols are the Standard Galactic Alphabet, created by Tom Hall for Commander Keen and later used by Minecraft.
- You can transliterate the glyphs, but their words do not identify or predict the enchantment.
