If Essential Mod will not connect, first identify whether Essential cannot authenticate at all or whether it loads but fails when joining a world. “You are not connected to Essential Network” usually points to account, Microsoft privacy, service-status, DNS, VPN, or firewall issues. “ICE failed” and “No such host is known” are more often connection-path, DNS, NAT, or host-side problems.
Essential is for Minecraft: Java Edition with an official Minecraft account. It does not support cracked or unofficial authentication. Check the Essential status page before changing your installation or router.

1. Check whether Essential is down
Open the live Essential status page and, if necessary, Minecraft’s official Java multiplayer troubleshooting guide. Essential has had incidents affecting network connections, and Minecraft or Mojang authentication problems can also prevent Essential from signing in.
If the status page shows an incident, wait for service recovery rather than reinstalling the mod, deleting profiles, or forwarding router ports. A status page that is operational does not completely rule out a regional or account-specific problem, but it makes local troubleshooting worthwhile.

2. Run the safe five-minute checks
- Quit Minecraft completely.
- Quit and reopen your launcher. Restart the computer if a launcher or Java process remains stuck.
- Sign out of the launcher, close it, reopen it, and sign back into the Microsoft account that owns Minecraft Java Edition.
- Confirm that both players use official Minecraft accounts and are launching Java Edition through an official authentication flow.
- Disconnect from any VPN or privacy relay and test again.
- Restart the router, or test from a phone hotspot to determine whether the home network is involved.
Do not permanently disable your firewall or antivirus. Use temporary, controlled tests and restore protection afterward.
3. Fix “You are not connected to Essential Network”
Reauthenticate after a username change
Essential documents a failure mode after changing a Minecraft username. Exit Minecraft, sign out of the Microsoft account in the Minecraft Launcher, close and reopen the launcher, then sign in again and start the profile containing Essential. Check the Social or Friends menu afterward. The relevant guidance is in Essential’s network-error documentation.
Check Xbox and Microsoft multiplayer permissions
Open the privacy and online-safety settings for the correct Microsoft/Xbox account. Make sure the account allows:
- Multiplayer games
- Adding friends
- Communication and invitations, where applicable
If the player belongs to a Microsoft family group, a parent or family organizer may control these settings. Essential says permission changes can take up to 24 hours to propagate, so an immediate retry is not always conclusive.

Verify the account is supported
Essential requires an official version of Minecraft Java Edition. Changing DNS, reinstalling Java, or opening ports cannot make a cracked or unofficial account authenticate with Essential. Also confirm that the launcher is signed into the account that actually owns Java Edition.
4. Fix “No such host is known”
If the error names a STUN or TURN server such as eu.stun.essential.gg or eu.turn.essential.gg, DNS or network filtering is a strong possibility. On Windows, open Command Prompt and run:
nslookup eu.stun.essential.gg
nslookup eu.turn.essential.ggA failed lookup is a useful clue, not absolute proof. A successful lookup only shows that DNS resolved; it does not prove that the complete peer-to-peer connection will work.

In Windows, use Settings → Network & internet, select the active Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection, open its DNS or hardware-properties section, edit DNS settings, switch to manual, enter the addresses, and save. See Cloudflare’s current 1.1.1.1 setup instructions for operating-system-specific details.
Restart the launcher and Minecraft after changing DNS. If it makes no difference, restore automatic DNS; this is a diagnostic option, not a guaranteed fix.

5. Fix “ICE failed” or failed world joins
Essential uses ICE and TURN-style connection and relay technology. That is why ordinary web browsing can work while Essential still fails to connect players. An ICE failure does not automatically mean the mod is broken or that a firewall is solely responsible.
Switch the host
Have the other player open a world and send the invite. If Player A can join Player B but Player B cannot join Player A, focus on Player A’s firewall, VPN, router, ISP, or NAT configuration. If neither direction works, check service status, accounts, versions, and shared network restrictions first.

Test security software
Allow the Minecraft Launcher and the Java runtime used by the selected profile through the firewall. If both exist, check java.exe and javaw.exe. Make sure the rule applies to the correct network type. Third-party antivirus products may also filter network traffic; pause that filtering briefly only if it is safe, then restore it.
Test the network
VPNs, school and workplace networks, hotels, libraries, managed apartment internet, satellite connections, mobile networks, carrier-grade NAT, strict or symmetric NAT, and DNS-filtering services can interfere with peer-to-peer or relay connections. A clean test from a phone hotspot is often more informative than repeatedly reinstalling Essential.

On a trusted home network, Windows’ network profile may also matter. Minecraft’s LAN guidance notes that a Private profile can help with local connectivity when Windows is incorrectly treating a trusted network as Public. Do not make a public or untrusted network private.

Essential supports selected Minecraft Java releases and loaders, not every possible version combination. Check the current Essential download page and manual-installation documentation rather than relying on an old tutorial.

Both players should compare:
- Minecraft version
- Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge, including loader version
- Essential build
- Required APIs and dependencies, such as Fabric API where applicable
- Every gameplay mod and dependency
- Java runtime expected by that Minecraft release
- Launcher profile and game directory
Do not compare only screenshots of the mods folder. Use the modpack manifest or compare the complete file and dependency lists. One player may have installed Essential into a different game directory, selected the wrong loader profile, or updated one mod without updating the other. Older modpacks may also target a Minecraft release for which no compatible Essential build is available.
Use a clean-profile test
- Create a new profile for the exact Minecraft version.
- Install only the required loader and Essential.
- Do not initially copy the full
mods, shaderpack, or configuration folders. - Have both players test a new single-player world and invite each other.
- If it works, restore the remaining mods in batches until the conflict appears.
A clean profile that works points to the modpack or configuration rather than a universal Essential outage.
7. Should you port-forward?
Usually, no—not as a first step. Essential is designed to let a player host from an in-game world using peer-to-peer and relay technologies. Port forwarding is not the normal remedy for an Essential authentication error, and randomly exposing router ports can create security and maintenance problems.
Port forwarding may also fail under carrier-grade NAT, school networks, apartment-managed internet, and some satellite or 5G connections. Test another network and collect evidence before changing router settings. If Essential’s connection method consistently does not suit your network, a dedicated server or Realms may be a better fit, but those are alternatives—not automatic fixes for a broken Essential installation.
8. When Essential may not be the right tool
Essential is convenient for occasional friend sessions, but the host’s computer must be running and hosting the world. A dedicated server offers a persistent world and more control, at the cost of setup, backups, security maintenance, and network or hosting administration. Minecraft Realms for Java offers official hosted-world convenience through a subscription, while the official Java server software provides a self-managed option. Modpack compatibility and current pricing vary, so check the official pages before choosing.
9. Escalate with useful evidence
If the status page is operational, the account is official, permissions are correct, a clean profile still fails, and another network does not help, contact Essential through its official support community. Include:
- Exact error text
- Minecraft version
- Loader and loader version
- Essential version
- Launcher and operating system
- Which player hosted and whether both directions were tested
- VPN, firewall, DNS, and alternate-network test results
- Whether a clean Essential-only profile worked
- Relevant debug logs, with tokens and personal information removed
Changing one variable at a time makes the result meaningful. Reinstalling everything, opening random ports, or disabling security software permanently usually produces more risk than information.
