Keep the cracked-looking budding amethyst blocks intact if you want crystals to grow; mine fully grown clusters with an appropriate pickaxe to collect shards. Those shards craft tinted glass and a spyglass.
Where do amethyst geodes spawn in Minecraft?
Amethyst geodes generate underground in the Overworld and may be exposed in caves or canyons. In Minecraft’s October 20, 2025 article, author Duncan Geere describes their generation range as Y-levels -58 to +30, with “about a one in 24 chance that a given chunk contains one.” These are approximate, publisher-reported generation figures—not a guarantee for any particular chunk or a location rule that applies unchanged to every edition and version. How to recognize one
- Outer shell: smooth basalt, usually the first dark layer you notice.
- Middle layer: pale calcite just inside the basalt.
- Interior: a hollow, cave-like space lined with amethyst blocks and crystals.
Follow the basalt and calcite layers inward. Some purple blocks have a cracked appearance; those are budding amethyst, the source of growing crystals.
How do amethyst crystals grow?
Crystals grow from budding amethyst, not from ordinary blocks of amethyst. Minecraft’s Bedrock 1.17.0.50 release notes describe buds growing on the sides of budding amethyst that are exposed to air or a water source. A bud progresses through small, medium, and large stages before becoming a full amethyst cluster. The Bedrock 1.17.0.50 notes document those mechanics.

If you want to collect crystals over time, leave budding amethyst in place and harvest the mature clusters that grow on it. The cited release notes do not establish an exact growth speed, and the sources here do not establish that budding amethyst can be moved or used for an automatic farm. Treat it as a block to preserve rather than one to mine for shards.
What pickaxe do you need to mine amethyst clusters?
The exact shard yield depends on the edition, version, tool, and cluster stage. The Bedrock 1.17.0.50 notes say a fully grown cluster mined with an iron pickaxe or better drops four shards, with Fortune able to increase the drop; without that tool requirement, it drops nothing. That is a historical Bedrock-specific rule, not a universal current-edition guarantee. Check the applicable Bedrock notes and current rules for the version you play before relying on an exact yield.

Minecraft’s separate Bedrock launch article describes different drops when clusters are broken by hand, piston, or other means. Since the historical sources differ in how they describe breaking methods, do not assume that a hand- or piston-broken cluster gives the same result as one mined with a qualifying pickaxe. Buds that have not reached the full cluster stage are not the mature harvest described by the four-shard rule.

Can you move budding amethyst or farm it?
The cited official sources explain that budding amethyst grows crystals, but do not establish that it can be moved or provide a supported method for relocating it. They also do not give an exact growth timer or document an automatic farm. For a dependable supply based on these mechanics, preserve the budding blocks in the geode and collect full clusters when they appear; avoid mining the growth source.

Amethyst blocks add sound as well as color to a build: Minecraft’s Bedrock release notes say they make sounds when walked on, broken, placed, or struck by a projectile. That makes them useful as a decorative or audio feature even when you are not harvesting shards. The release notes list these sound interactions.
