Evokers are spell-casting illagers encountered in woodland mansions and raids. They create evocation fangs along the ground and summon flying vexes, so standing still behind a shield is not a reliable strategy. Find the evoker, attack it from range, retreat when vexes surround you, and only then finish clearing the room.

What an evoker is and why it is dangerous
An evoker is a spell-casting illager. In a woodland mansion, it is commonly encountered on an upper floor among other hostile mobs; evokers can also appear during raids. The official Minecraft description presents two signature attacks: evocation fangs that erupt from the ground and vexes that fly directly at the player.
The fight is deliberately a movement test. A TIME interview with Minecraft design lead Jens Bergensten explained the design goal: “I wanted to force players to move around and not just stand with a shield and wait.” That principle explains why conventional shield-and-sword turtling fails. You must watch the floor, the air and your escape route at the same time.
#1 Best Overall
- Evocation fangs: ground attacks that punish a stationary player and can appear in a line or a surrounding ring.
- Vexes: flying summons that attack from unexpected angles and can pass through mansion walls and floors.
- Vindicators: nearby illagers whose axes create an additional close-range threat while you are trying to reposition.
- Totem of Undying: the reward associated with defeating the evoker and a possible emergency safeguard if held when fatal damage is received.
Do not rely on a single defensive item. Your primary defenses are distance, a clear line of sight, constant repositioning and a planned retreat.
How evocation fangs work
Recognizing the warning
Evokers telegraph their spells with a shimmering sound. Treat that sound as a command to look at the floor and move, not as an invitation to finish one more attack. The fangs are tied to the evoker’s position and can appear under or near the player, so backing away as soon as the spell begins is safer than trying to absorb the hit.
Rows and rings
A mansion-combat tutorial describes two useful patterns. When the player is within 16 blocks, fangs may appear as a row. When the evoker is cornered, they may appear as a ring around it. These details come from a community gameplay reference and can vary by Minecraft edition or version, so use them as practical guidance rather than immutable statistics.
The important lesson is pattern recognition: a straight line can be avoided by stepping sideways or changing direction, while a ring signals that standing close to the caster is especially dangerous. Do not walk forward to “trade” damage with the evoker. Create space first, then shoot.
Why armor and shields are not enough
The same tutorial reports that evocation fangs bypass armor and shields. A shield may still help against ordinary attacks, but it is not a complete answer to an evoker. Blocking in place leaves you exposed to the spell beneath your feet and to vexes approaching from above or behind. Keep moving even while your shield is raised, and lower it when you need to sprint, turn or fire.
How to kill an evoker: the safest sequence
1. Prepare before entering
Bring a ranged weapon, enough ammunition, food and a route back to a safer corridor or exterior. A bow or crossbow lets you damage the caster without standing in fang range. Carry a melee weapon for vexes and vindicators, but do not make it your opening tool.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Choose an entry point that leaves a visible path back out.
- Clear or identify nearby rooms before committing to a fight; a narrow doorway can become a trap when vexes arrive.
- Keep your hotbar arranged so you can switch quickly between ranged weapon, melee weapon, food, blocks and a shield.
- If you already own a Totem of Undying, reserve the off-hand for it when survival is more important than shield use.
2. Advance room by room
Woodland mansions are maze-like. Move through one room at a time instead of sprinting down a hallway and triggering several groups. Listen for the evoker’s shimmering spell sound. Open sight lines from a doorway or corridor are valuable because they let you fire while preserving a retreat route.

3. Locate the caster and mark your exit
When an evoker appears, identify where you will retreat before taking the shot. Avoid fighting with your back against furniture, a staircase or a dead-end wall. Vexes can cross walls and floors, so a solid block between you and the evoker is only temporary cover, not permanent containment.
4. Shoot the evoker first
Use ranged attacks as soon as the caster is visible. Distance reduces exposure to fangs and gives you a chance to remove the source of the vexes before the swarm grows. Do not spend the opening seconds chasing a nearby vindicator while the evoker remains active.
After each shot, reposition rather than planting your feet. Strafe, step through the doorway or retreat around a corner, then re-establish line of sight. If the evoker disappears from view, do not rush blindly into the room; wait for another safe angle.
5. React to fangs immediately
At the shimmering warning, look down and change direction. Side-step out of a row, back away from a ring and keep enough room to avoid being pushed into another mob. A shield is not a substitute for movement, and armor cannot be assumed to stop the fang damage described by the tutorial.
6. Break contact when vexes accumulate
The tutorial describes evokers as capable of summoning three vexes. Because vexes fly and pass through walls and floors, retreating only a few blocks may not separate you from them. Run toward a wider area or outside the mansion, keep turning to avoid being surrounded, and attack the evoker again when the route is clear. Retreat is a reset, not a failure.
7. Confirm the evoker is dead, then clean up
Once the caster falls, deal with the remaining vexes and vindicators. Check ceilings, adjoining rooms and stairwells before assuming the area is safe. Only after the immediate threats are gone should you collect the dropped Totem of Undying and continue through the mansion.
How to handle vexes in a woodland mansion
Why walls do not permanently protect you
Vexes can pass through walls and floors. A room that looks sealed may still be reached by summoned vexes, so do not hide behind one block and wait indefinitely. Use cover to break the evoker’s line of sight or buy time to eat, but continue moving toward a larger, more controllable space.

Keep the swarm in front of you
Turn frequently so the vexes do not approach from several directions. Back into an open hallway rather than a cluttered bedroom. Swing only when a vex is within reliable melee range; chasing one through furniture often exposes you to another attack. If you have a ranged weapon ready, use it while retreating, but prioritize avoiding encirclement over landing an extra shot.
When to retreat completely
Leave the room if you cannot see the evoker, if vindicators block the exit or if vexes are attacking from multiple elevations. A short retreat to the mansion entrance or outside gives you room to heal and reorganize. Re-enter only after you know which doorway leads to the caster and which route remains open.
How to get and use a Totem of Undying
In this encounter, defeating an evoker provides a Totem of Undying. The official Minecraft explanation describes it as a relic that activates when the player receives fatal damage, granting a last-minute reprieve instead of ordinary death.
Equip it before the dangerous section
Put the totem in your off-hand when you expect a high-risk fight. The official article describes the off-hand as the required position for the effect in this context and notes that doing so prevents simultaneous shield use. Minecraft also permits a held totem in the main hand; what matters is that it is actively held, not stored in a hotbar slot or ordinary inventory space.

An off-hand totem replaces your shield. Decide before entering the room whether the emergency revival effect is worth giving up shield coverage. Against an evoker, movement remains essential either way: a shield does not solve fangs, and a totem does not stop the next attack after it activates.
Secure the drop safely
Do not sprint toward the totem while vexes or vindicators remain active. Clear the area, check the floor around the corpse and collect the item only when you can retreat without crossing an active fang pattern.
Clearing a woodland mansion safely
Use a controlled route
- Enter with food, a ranged weapon, ammunition, melee backup and a planned exit.
- Mark explored corridors or use torches so you can distinguish cleared rooms from unexplored ones.
- Approach doorways from the side and preserve a line of retreat.
- Listen for the shimmering evoker sound before committing to a room.
- When an evoker appears, shoot it before pursuing other targets.
- Move continuously while watching for fang rows or rings.
- Retreat to an open area if vexes swarm or vindicators close the doorway.
- After the evoker dies, remove vexes and vindicators, then inspect adjacent rooms and floors.
- Collect the Totem of Undying and decide whether to equip it before the next engagement.
Managing vindicators
Vindicators use axes and are particularly dangerous when they force you into close quarters. Do not let one pin you against a wall while an evoker casts. If a vindicator reaches the doorway, back into a wider corridor, separate it from the caster and finish the highest immediate threat without losing sight of the floor.

Using terrain without trusting it too much
Doorways, stair landings and corners let you break line of sight and create firing angles. They do not make you immune: fangs can appear near your feet and vexes can cross the mansion’s walls and floors. Treat terrain as a way to control timing, not as a permanent bunker.
Mansion evokers versus raid evokers
The same core priorities apply in both encounters, but the surrounding space changes your options.
| Factor | Woodland mansion | Raid |
|---|---|---|
| Encounter space | Confined rooms, corridors and staircases; furniture can obstruct movement. | Open village terrain with more room to change direction, but more possible approach angles. |
| Supporting mobs | Vindicators commonly add close-range pressure inside the mansion. | Other raid waves can divide your attention and make the evoker harder to isolate. |
| Escape and line of sight | Doorways and corners provide short resets, but the maze can create dead ends. | Open ground offers longer sight lines; buildings, terrain and village structures can still block shots. |
| Vex separation | Vexes can cross floors and walls, so a nearby room is not guaranteed safety. | There is generally more room to kite, but the open area can make it harder to keep every threat in view. |
| Best first target | Evoker, before vexes accumulate. | Evoker, while maintaining awareness of the rest of the raid. |
Exact health, damage, cooldowns and spawn counts depend on the Minecraft edition and version. The available guidance does not establish a current universal set of those statistics, so they should not be used to plan a fight without checking the rules for your specific version.

Standing still behind a shield
Problem: The shield encourages you to wait while fangs form beneath you.
Recommended Free Tools
Fix: Keep moving, watch the ground when you hear the spell telegraph and use the shield only as one part of your defense.
Chasing a vindicator first
Problem: You spend time on a melee mob while the evoker continues creating fangs and vexes.
Fix: Break away, create distance and attack the caster first whenever a safe shot is available.
Best Value
Assuming a wall contains vexes
Problem: You retreat into an adjacent room and are surprised when vexes arrive through the structure.
Fix: Use walls to interrupt sight lines briefly, then move toward an open route or leave the mansion.
Fighting in a dead end
Problem: A staircase, corner or furniture blocks your escape while fangs and vindicators close in.
Fix: Identify the retreat route before firing and reposition after every attack.
Collecting the totem too early
Problem: You rush to the drop while vexes remain active.
Fix: Clear the room and check nearby floors first; the item is only useful if you survive long enough to equip or use it.
Quick decision checklist
- Can you see the evoker? If yes, attack it from range. If no, do not charge into an unknown room.
- Did you hear the shimmering spell cue? Look at the floor and change direction immediately.
- Are vexes surrounding you? Retreat to open ground instead of trading melee hits in a doorway.
- Is a vindicator blocking your exit? Move laterally or take a different route; avoid being cornered.
- Is the evoker dead? Confirm before collecting the totem, then clear remaining mobs.
- Do you need the totem’s emergency effect? Hold it in the main hand or off-hand; inventory storage will not trigger it.
The practical rule for every evoker fight
Locate the caster, keep moving and kill it before the secondary threats become unmanageable. Fangs make stationary defense unreliable, vexes make nearby walls temporary cover, and vindicators punish careless retreats. A ranged opening, a visible escape route and disciplined repositioning turn a mansion fight from a chaotic ambush into a sequence you can control.
