Minecraft Fall-Damage Kills: Do Mobs Still Drop Items, XP, or Rare Loot?

Usually, yes: a mob that dies from fall damage can still drop its ordinary items. The important limitation is kill attribution. Drops or experience that require a player or tamed wolf may not be awarded when the fall is the fatal damage. Results vary by mob, edition, game version, loot-table conditions, and world settings.

What a fall-damage death normally gives you

Minecraft creates a mob’s loot when the mob dies, but each loot entry has its own conditions. A fall does not automatically erase every drop. In a basic fall grinder, zombies, skeletons, spiders, and other mobs can therefore leave their normal item drops when the impact kills them.

“Normal” does not mean “every possible drop.” A mob’s loot table can distinguish between an ordinary death and a death credited to a player or a player’s tamed pet. The same mob can produce one result in an automatic farm and another when you deliver the final hit yourself.

  • Ordinary loot: commonly remains available after a fatal fall, subject to the mob’s own loot rules and the world’s drop settings.
  • Player- or pet-dependent loot: can require kill credit from a player or tamed wolf and may be missing after an automatic fall.
  • Experience: should not be assumed for a fall-only kill; automatic killing can suppress it.

The safest answer to the literal question is therefore “yes for ordinary drops, but not necessarily for conditional drops or XP.”

Why kill attribution changes the result

Loot entries can check who caused the death

Loot is not one indivisible package. A table can contain entries that are always eligible and others gated by a condition. Microsoft Learn’s Bedrock loot-table documentation lists conditions including killed_by_player and killed_by_player_or_pets. Those names describe the kind of check a loot entry can perform: was the mob killed by a player, or by a player or an eligible pet?

That documentation is a framework reference rather than a complete catalog of every mob’s current drops. To determine whether a particular rare item is conditional, inspect that mob’s loot rules for your edition and version. Do not infer the answer from another mob’s behavior.

The fatal damage source is the practical test

For a fall farm, the question is not merely whether a player touched the mob earlier. The game must still retain the relevant attacker or pet attribution when the mob dies. If the fall is the final damage, the resulting death can be treated as automatic for purposes of some loot conditions.

This distinction explains why a farm may collect common materials while producing no experience and fewer special drops. The items are generated under different rules, not because fall damage universally disables loot.

Fall grinder versus player kill

The following comparison captures the behavior documented in Minecraft’s mob-farm guidance and loot-condition documentation. “Generally” is intentional: individual mobs and versions can add their own conditions.

Result Fatal fall in an automatic grinder Player or qualifying tamed-wolf kill
Ordinary item drops Generally generated when the mob’s normal loot rules allow them Generated when the mob’s normal loot rules allow them
Player-caused or pet-caused drops May be absent because the fall is not credited as the required kill Eligible when the loot condition recognizes the player or pet
Experience Automatic killing may suppress it Associated with a qualifying player or pet kill when the mob’s rules provide it
Relevant loot conditions Still apply to the mob’s table Still apply, with player or pet attribution available where required

This is why an automatic farm is useful for bulk materials but not a guaranteed replacement for a manual kill chamber.

What this means for a basic mob farm

Use a fall chamber for dependable bulk items

If your goal is the mob’s ordinary material, a fall chamber can be a practical design. Mobs are moved into a vertical shaft, take fall damage, and die or become weak enough for collection. Hoppers or another collection system can then gather items below. The exact height, transport method, and damage outcome depend on the mob and the farm design; there is no single fall distance that works for every creature.

Because automatic killing can change experience and special-drop behavior, plan the farm around the output you actually need. A high-throughput item farm and an experience farm have different requirements even when they use the same spawning area.

Keep a manual finishing area when you need player credit

A common compromise is to let the fall inflict most of the damage, then finish surviving mobs yourself. This can make player-dependent outcomes possible, but it is not a universal guarantee. The loot condition must recognize the final attribution, and some designs leave the mob in a state where a player cannot safely or consistently finish every target.

If a tamed wolf is used instead, verify that the specific loot condition recognizes pets. The Bedrock condition name killed_by_player_or_pets is not evidence that every mob has a pet-qualified drop; it only shows that the loot system supports that kind of check.

Separate item collection from XP collection

Do not judge a farm by item output alone. A chest full of ordinary drops does not prove that the farm should also generate experience. Experience is tied to kill-credit rules and can be withheld by automatic killing. If XP is a requirement, design for a qualifying kill rather than assuming the same fall chamber will provide it.

Special drops need a mob-specific check

“Rare drop” covers several different mechanics, so a blanket answer is unsafe. Some drops are simply uncommon entries in a normal table; others are explicitly conditional on a player, pet, weapon, or another state. The supplied references establish the player and pet kill conditions, but they do not provide a complete, current, mob-by-mob list for Java and Bedrock.

Before building a farm around one named item, check all of the following:

  • The mob’s loot table for your edition and game version.
  • Whether the desired entry uses a player or pet kill condition.
  • Whether the farm’s final damage source preserves the required attribution.
  • Whether your world settings allow the relevant drops and experience.
  • Whether the item is an ordinary drop, an experience-related reward, or a separate advancement or event reward.

If any of those details is unknown, treat the fall farm as suitable for ordinary loot only until you test the specific target.

Java and Bedrock: what can be said confidently

Bedrock’s documented loot conditions

Microsoft Learn’s minecraft:loot_table documentation, updated March 5, 2026, documents the condition names used by Bedrock loot tables. It is the clearest official basis for explaining why a player-caused entry can behave differently from an automatic death. The documentation describes how loot generation can evaluate kill conditions; it does not promise that every mob uses every condition.

Microsoft’s Bedrock documentation for the loot command also describes generating loot from an entity-kill loot table. That command is useful for inspecting or testing table behavior in a controlled world, but it does not turn an automatic farm death into a player kill. The condition still depends on the context represented in the loot generation.

Java has a version-sensitive attribution caveat

Mojang issue MC-260761 records a Java behavior in which fatal fall damage after another damage source can remove attacker attribution. In practical terms, hitting a mob first does not guarantee that a later fall death will count as your kill for every purpose. The issue is version-sensitive, so the report should be treated as a warning to test the exact Java version you run rather than as a universal rule for all releases.

There is no complete Java-versus-Bedrock parity list in the available references. If a special drop, statistic, advancement, or XP result matters, identify the edition and version before relying on a farm design.

Mixed-damage setups: why “I hit it first” can fail

Mixed-damage farms create the most misleading results. A player may strike a mob, push it into a shaft, and then see ordinary items appear. That observation does not establish that player-only loot or experience will be awarded. The game may evaluate the fatal fall as the decisive event, and the earlier attacker record may not survive the transition.

To make a mixed setup predictable, decide which event must be credited:

  1. For ordinary items: allow the fall to finish the mob and verify the chest output over multiple cycles.
  2. For player-dependent output: prevent the fall from being fatal, then perform the final hit in the intended edition and version.
  3. For pet-dependent output: use a qualifying tamed wolf only if the mob’s loot condition supports that attribution.
  4. For XP: test the complete kill sequence, including whether the player is present and whether the final damage is credited correctly.

Do not combine these tests into one conclusion. A successful ordinary drop test cannot prove that XP or a conditional rare item will work.

How to test a farm without guessing

A controlled test is more reliable than a single lucky drop. Use a copy of the world or a temporary test area so you can repeat the same sequence.

  1. Identify the exact target: name the mob, item, XP result, edition, and game version.
  2. Run an automatic-fall trial: allow several mobs to die only from the fall and record items and XP separately.
  3. Run a manual-kill trial: use the same spawning conditions, but finish comparable mobs yourself.
  4. Run a pet trial if relevant: let the qualifying tamed wolf deliver the decisive damage.
  5. Compare outcomes: distinguish ordinary drops, conditional entries, and experience instead of treating the total chest contents as one result.
  6. Repeat after changing one variable: edition, version, damage source, or world setting. Changing several at once makes the result impossible to interpret.

A test can show that a setup works in your environment, but a negative result may indicate either a missing condition or an attribution problem. Check the mob’s table before rebuilding the entire farm.

Troubleshooting when the chest is empty

The mob may not have died in the way you think

Fire, suffocation, entity cramming, a weapon, and fall damage can occur in the same chamber. If another source delivers the fatal hit, you are not testing a fall-only kill. Temporarily remove other damage sources and observe one mob at a time.

The drop may be conditional

If common items appear but a named special item does not, inspect the entry’s kill condition. A missing player or pet condition is a more plausible explanation than “fall damage removes all loot.”

Experience may be intentionally suppressed

Item output and XP are separate checks. Automatic killing can produce a full chest while yielding no experience. Convert the final stage to a qualifying player kill if XP is the priority.

Your version may differ

Edition and version matter, especially for attacker attribution. Reproduce the test on the exact release used by the server or world, and do not transfer a Java result directly to Bedrock or vice versa.

World settings can alter drops

Confirm that mob spawning, item drops, and experience have not been disabled or changed by the world’s settings, commands, or server configuration. A farm cannot produce an output that the world has been configured to suppress.

Which kill method should you choose?

  • Choose a fall grinder when ordinary item throughput is the main goal and you accept that XP or player-dependent drops may be unavailable.
  • Choose a player-finishing chamber when experience or a player-conditioned entry is important.
  • Choose a pet-finishing setup only after confirming that the mob’s loot table recognizes pet attribution.
  • Use a hybrid design when you want automatic transport and damage but still need a controlled final hit.
  • Test before scaling whenever the farm is built around one rare item, a statistic, or a version-specific mechanic.

Bottom line

Fall damage does not automatically cancel mob loot. A fatal fall can produce ordinary drops, which is why fall-based item farms work. What it cannot guarantee is the credit-sensitive part of the reward: player- or pet-conditioned drops and experience may be withheld, and prior player damage does not always preserve attribution. Treat the fatal damage source, the mob’s loot conditions, and the exact Java or Bedrock version as separate variables, then test the output you actually need.
