One gunpowder gives flight duration 1, two gives duration 2, and three gives duration 3. These rockets have no explosion unless you add a firework star. Stars determine color, shape and special effects, so starless rockets are the normal choice for Elytra boosts, while star-equipped rockets are used for displays or crossbow ammunition.

How Minecraft fireworks are built
A Minecraft firework is a rocket item assembled from two different stages: the rocket itself and, when an explosion is wanted, a firework star. The rocket controls how long it flies. The star supplies the visible burst and its design. Keeping those jobs separate makes the recipes easier to understand and prevents common mistakes.

- Finished firework: A rocket can be made with no star for a non-explosive boost, or with one or more stars for an explosive effect. The star is added while crafting the rocket.
The 2026 recipe reference from crafting.recipes records the fixed output of three rockets per recipe and the duration range of 1 to 3. The exact Java-versus-Bedrock release is not specified by the recipe summary, so check the recipe book in the edition and version you are documenting if a server or classroom uses a particular release.
Basic rocket recipe and flight duration
Ingredients and output
| Paper | Gunpowder | Result | Explosion |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 | 3 rockets, flight duration 1 | None without a star |
| 1 | 2 | 3 rockets, flight duration 2 | None without a star |
| 1 | 3 | 3 rockets, flight duration 3 | None without a star |
Flight duration is a setting on the rocket, not a measurement of how many rockets are in the output. Increasing gunpowder from one to three changes the length of the rocket’s flight and, for an Elytra user, the length of the boost. It does not increase the number crafted: all three recipes make three rockets.

Crafting procedure
- Open a crafting grid.
- Place one paper and the chosen amount of gunpowder in the grid. The items can occupy any arrangement that the recipe accepts; the recipe book can place the pattern for you.
- Take the stack of three rockets from the result slot.
- Inspect the item description or recipe result to confirm the duration before committing a large supply of materials.
A rocket made this way is starless. It will launch and travel, but it has no explosion effect. That is useful when the goal is propulsion rather than a visual burst.
Gunpowder planning
Because each craft makes three rockets, plan materials in groups of three. For a target of R rockets, craft enough batches to round R up to the next multiple of three. Every batch consumes one paper. A duration-1 batch consumes one gunpowder, duration 2 consumes two, and duration 3 consumes three.

Making a firework star
Base star recipe
Combine gunpowder with one or more dyes to make a firework star. The dye or dyes provide the explosion colors. A star can also include one shape ingredient and either or both of the special effect ingredients.
| Component | What it changes | Choices documented for the recipe |
|---|---|---|
| Gunpowder | Creates the star’s explosion effect | Required |
| One or more dyes | Sets explosion color | Use the dyes available in your inventory; multiple dyes allow a multicolor design |
| Shape ingredient | Selects the burst form | None, fire charge, gold nugget, feather or a head |
| Diamond | Adds a trail | Optional |
| Glowstone dust | Adds twinkle | Optional |
Shape choices
| Shape ingredient | Resulting shape |
|---|---|
| No shape ingredient | Small ball |
| Fire charge | Large ball |
| Gold nugget | Star |
| Feather | Burst |
| A head | Creeper face |
Only one shape choice belongs in a star recipe. If you want a different silhouette, make another star with the desired shape ingredient rather than trying to combine several shape items. A head produces the Creeper-face pattern documented by the recipe; the recipe summary does not limit that choice to a particular head type, so verify the accepted item in your edition if the grid rejects it.
Rank #2
Trail and twinkle
Adding diamond to the star gives the explosion a trail. Adding glowstone dust gives it twinkle. These are independent additions: a star can have a trail, twinkle, both, or neither. They do not replace the dye or shape ingredient, and they do not set the rocket’s flight duration.
Step-by-step star crafting
- Open the crafting grid.
- Place gunpowder and at least one dye in the grid.
- Add no shape item for a small ball, or add exactly one of the documented shape ingredients for a different form.
- Add diamond if a trail is wanted.
- Add glowstone dust if twinkle is wanted.
- Collect the firework star and keep it separate from the paper-and-gunpowder rocket ingredients until you are ready to assemble the finished rocket.
The star is not itself a launchable rocket. It is the design component consumed when you craft the final firework.
Adding fade colors
Fade colors are applied in a second star-crafting step. Start with an existing firework star, then combine that star with one or more dyes to add the colors that appear as the explosion fades. The original star’s explosion color and design remain the foundation; the added dyes define the fade portion.
- Craft the first star with its main color, shape and optional trail or twinkle.
- Place that existing star back into the crafting grid with one or more additional dyes.
- Collect the star carrying the fade colors.
- Use the modified star when assembling the rocket.
If a rocket does not show the fade you planned, check that you modified the completed star rather than adding the extra dye only when crafting the rocket. The fade is a property of the star, so it must be attached before the star is inserted into the rocket recipe.
Assembling a colored or shaped rocket
Once a star is ready, combine it with the paper-and-gunpowder rocket ingredients. The gunpowder count still sets flight duration, while the star supplies the explosion design. This lets you use the same visual star with different flight durations by crafting separate rocket batches.

- Prepare one or more firework stars with the desired color, shape, fade, trail and twinkle.
- Open the crafting grid and place one paper, one to three gunpowder and the star or stars.
- Choose the gunpowder count according to the required flight duration.
- Take the resulting stack of three rockets.
- Craft a test rocket before producing a large show, especially when several stars or a Creeper-face shape are involved.
The recipe summary does not state a numerical limit for how many stars can be placed in one rocket. It does establish that rockets can contain an explosion effect and that crossbow damage increases with more stars. Treat the number of stars accepted by your particular edition as a version-specific behavior and confirm it in the recipe book before planning a large build.
Choosing the right rocket for the job
| Use | Explosion effect | Flight duration | Design considerations | Recommended build |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vertical display launched by hand | Optional; use a star for a visible burst | 1–3 | Color, shape, fade, trail and twinkle are visible design choices | Paper plus chosen gunpowder and one or more designed stars |
| Redstone display using a dispenser | Optional; stars create the visual effect | 1–3 | Direction is controlled by the dispenser’s facing | Match duration and design to the timing of the mechanism |
| Elytra travel | Use the non-explosive design | 1–3 | Longer duration supplies a longer boost; visual effects are a hazard in flight | Paper plus one to three gunpowder, with no star |
| Crossbow ammunition | Required for damage | 1–3 | More stars add damage; Multishot can fire three rockets with the same effects | Paper plus gunpowder and an explosion-bearing star setup |
This table separates the two decisions players often mix up: how long a rocket flies and what happens when its explosion effect triggers. A duration-3 rocket is not automatically more colorful, and a star with a dramatic shape is not automatically a longer-flight rocket.
Using fireworks for Elytra travel
Why starless rockets are the normal choice
While gliding, a rocket pushes the player in the direction they are facing. A longer flight duration supplies a longer boost. A star-equipped rocket can hurt the player when it explodes, so the standard travel loadout is the starless rocket made from paper and gunpowder alone.
Travel procedure
- Craft starless rockets with the duration you want. Duration 1 uses one gunpowder, duration 2 uses two, and duration 3 uses three.
- Place the rockets in an accessible hotbar slot before taking off.
- Begin the Elytra glide, face the direction you want to travel and use a rocket to receive the boost.
- Watch your trajectory and use another rocket only when another push is needed.
- If a rocket behaves unexpectedly, check that it is starless and that you did not accidentally select a display rocket from the same inventory.
Duration 3 is the longest setting documented by the recipe summary, but the correct choice depends on how much control you need. Shorter-duration rockets give more frequent, smaller decisions; longer-duration rockets keep the push going for longer. The recipe data does not provide a distance, speed or fuel-efficiency figure, so do not treat duration as a guaranteed number of blocks traveled.
Travel safety checklist
- Keep display rockets and travel rockets in separate hotbar slots.
- Read the item description before launching if several designs look similar.
- Do not add a firework star to the rockets reserved for routine gliding.
- Carry enough paper and gunpowder for the number of boosts planned, using the three-rockets-per-craft calculation above.
Launching fireworks in displays
Hand launch from a block
Using a rocket on a block produces a vertical launch. This is the straightforward option for a single player testing a design or triggering a small display manually. Put the finished rocket in your hand, aim at the block and use it. The rocket’s duration controls how long it travels before its effect; the star controls the burst seen at the end.
Rank #4
Dispenser launches
Dispensers launch rockets in the direction they face, which makes them useful for redstone shows. Build the dispenser so its front points along the intended launch path, load the chosen rockets, then connect the activation circuit. Because the dispenser’s facing determines direction, rotate the block before debugging the redstone timing.
For a coordinated show, treat each dispenser as a separate channel: select its rocket duration for the desired timing and its star design for the desired visual. The supplied mechanics establish direction and recipe behavior but do not provide a universal timing schedule, so tune the delay for your own layout rather than copying a duration-to-height claim.

Using fireworks as crossbow ammunition
What makes a rocket deal damage
Rockets can be loaded as crossbow ammunition, but they deal damage only when they contain an explosion effect. A plain starless travel rocket therefore does not provide the damaging behavior required for this use. More stars add damage, according to the documented mechanics.
Loading and firing
- Craft rockets that include an explosion-bearing star setup.
- Keep those rockets in your inventory and load the crossbow through the normal ammunition interface.
- Aim and fire normally, remembering that the projectile’s effect comes from the rocket’s star configuration.
- For a Multishot crossbow, expect three rockets to fire with the same effects when the ammunition and enchantment conditions allow it.
The available mechanics do not give a damage number, blast radius, or target-specific result. Compare designs by whether they contain an explosion and by the number of stars, not by an invented fixed damage value. If a fired rocket produces no damage, first inspect the ammunition and confirm that an explosion effect was actually included.

Troubleshooting common mistakes
The rocket launches but has no explosion
The rocket was made without a firework star. That is the intended result for a starless rocket. Craft a star with gunpowder and dye, then include it when crafting the final rocket if a visible burst is required.
Best Value
The rocket has the wrong flight duration
Count the gunpowder in the rocket recipe. One, two and three gunpowder correspond to durations 1, 2 and 3. The number of stars or dyes does not set duration.

The color is missing or incorrect
Check the dyes used in the star, not just the materials in the rocket recipe. Dyes set explosion colors. If you wanted a fade, modify the completed star with additional dyes before inserting it into the rocket.
The shape is not what you expected
Review the shape ingredient: no shape item makes a small ball, fire charge makes a large ball, gold nugget makes a star, feather makes a burst and a head makes a Creeper face. Recraft the star with the intended single shape ingredient.
The Elytra boost causes damage
Inspect the selected rocket for an explosion-bearing star. Explosive stars can hurt the player during flight; replace that stack with the starless paper-and-gunpowder design intended for travel.
A dispenser fires the wrong way
Dispensers launch in the direction they face. Reorient the dispenser, then retest the redstone trigger.
A crossbow rocket does not damage a target
Crossbow rockets need an explosion effect to deal damage. Verify that the ammunition contains a firework star. A starless rocket is suitable for propulsion but not for the damaging crossbow behavior described here.
Edition and version checks
The recipe information covers general Minecraft mechanics, but the supplied title does not identify Java Edition, Bedrock Edition or a particular release. Before publishing a server-specific tutorial or troubleshooting a failed recipe, open the in-game recipe book in the target edition and release and confirm the accepted ingredients, output and item description. This is especially important for the head ingredient and for any plan that relies on multiple stars, because the summary does not state every edition-specific limit.
The stable facts are the core recipe relationships: paper plus one to three gunpowder makes three rockets, gunpowder count controls duration 1–3, stars provide explosion effects, dyes provide colors, shape ingredients select forms, diamond adds a trail, glowstone dust adds twinkle, fade dyes modify an existing star, dispensers follow their facing, starless rockets are the normal Elytra choice, and crossbow damage requires an explosion effect.
Quick Recap
Quick checklist before crafting a batch
- Decide whether the rocket is for travel, a display or a crossbow.
- Choose duration 1, 2 or 3 by counting gunpowder.
- Remember that one craft always returns three rockets.
- For a display, make a star with dye and select the shape, fade, trail and twinkle effects.
- For Elytra travel, leave the star out.
- For crossbow damage, include an explosion-bearing star and remember that additional stars add damage.
- Test one finished rocket in the target edition before committing all materials to a large stockpile or timed show.
