If you own the digital Nintendo Switch version, Nintendo says you can preorder the Switch 2 Standard Edition for free in most territories through the end of January 2027. The offer does not state eligibility for owners of the physical Switch cartridge.
When does Minecraft come out on Switch 2?
Nintendo lists October 27, 2026, as the launch date and says preorders are available now. Australia has a regional timing difference: Nintendo’s announcement lists the physical release for October 27 and the digital release for October 28. Check your local Nintendo listing for the date that applies to your region.

Nintendo’s general US preorder policy says eShop digital preorders are charged in full seven days before release. Physical pre-purchases through Nintendo Store are charged immediately and ship one to three business days after release. Those are Nintendo’s stated US terms, not a guarantee of how another retailer handles payment or shipping.
Who qualifies for the free Switch 2 upgrade?
The limited-time offer applies to people who own the digital version of Minecraft for Nintendo Switch. Eligible owners can preorder the digital Switch 2 Standard Edition at no charge through January 2027, according to Nintendo of America’s October 7, 2026 announcement. Nintendo specifies fees of 100 JPY in Japan and 30 NTD in Taiwan; the offer is free in the other territories covered by the announcement.

Nintendo also says eligible owners can choose the Deluxe or Ultimate Collection at discounted fees, but its US announcement does not publish those amounts. The announced offer is for digital Switch owners; Nintendo does not say that buying or owning the physical Switch cartridge qualifies.
Which Switch 2 edition should you preorder?
Nintendo’s October 7 announcement gives these regular prices for the US editions. They are not the discounted Deluxe or Ultimate upgrade prices for eligible existing owners.

All three versions include the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack. It adds a Mario-themed world, 15 tracks and 40 player skins. Minecoins included with or purchased for Minecraft on a Nintendo device must be used in the Nintendo ecosystem.
If you qualify for the digital-owner offer and only want the base game, Standard is the no-cost choice in most territories. The collections add the listed content, but Nintendo has not disclosed the exact upgrade fees for Deluxe or Ultimate.

What changes in the Switch 2 version?
The prominent upgrade is Vibrant Visuals, which Nintendo and Mojang describe as an enhanced visual experience with improved lighting and shadows. Mojang said it would be the default visual experience for the Switch 2 version. Nintendo cautions that Vibrant Visuals is unavailable in some gameplay, including split-screen and certain Marketplace Worlds and content.
Nintendo says existing Nintendo Switch worlds can be carried over to Switch 2. The US store listing estimates the game at 1.2 GB and notes that preorder details, including ratings and file size, may not be final.

Is there a physical Switch 2 copy?
Yes. Nintendo has announced a physical retail edition as well as the digital Standard, Deluxe Collection and Ultimate Collection. The physical edition is a separate purchase route; the free upgrade terms Nintendo describes are for digital Switch owners. Retailer stock and prices can vary, so check the live listing before buying.

Cross-platform play requires a Microsoft Account. Online multiplayer on Switch 2 requires a separately sold Nintendo Switch Online membership, according to Nintendo’s US product listing.
