What players often call “fossil hunting” in vanilla is archaeology: brush naturally generated suspicious sand or suspicious gravel to uncover structure-specific loot. Actual fossils are added by mods, including Cobblemon and Better Archeology, where the dig sites and block types depend on the mod.

Does vanilla Minecraft have fossils?
No. Vanilla Minecraft does not generate fossil blocks. The closest equivalent is the archaeology system, which hides items inside suspicious sand and suspicious gravel. A Brush removes the suspicious material and reveals one loot item; the block becomes ordinary sand or gravel afterward.

This distinction matters when you are following a “Minecraft fossils” map or tutorial. Searching caves or digging through deserts will not reveal a vanilla fossil structure. In an unmodded world, you should search for the ruins, pyramids and wells that contain suspicious blocks. If you want collectible dinosaur-style fossils, you need a mod installed on the world and on every client joining it.
Vanilla archaeology at a glance
| What you are looking for | Where it generates | How to recover the contents | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Suspicious sand | Warm ocean ruins, desert pyramids and desert wells | Use a Brush and hold the use action until the brushing animation completes | Mining it with a pickaxe or shovel destroys it and drops nothing |
| Suspicious gravel | Cold ocean ruins and trail ruins | Use a Brush; the block turns into normal gravel | Only naturally generated suspicious gravel can contain loot |
| Modded fossil blocks | Mod-specific dig sites and structures | Use the mod’s supported Brush interaction | Locations, loot and recipes vary by mod version |
Suspicious gravel in ocean ruins and trail ruins was added in Minecraft 1.20. A world running another version may have different archaeology generation, so check the version of the world and the mod before using a location guide.

Where to find suspicious sand and suspicious gravel
Warm ocean ruins: suspicious sand
Warm ocean ruins can contain suspicious sand. These structures are underwater, so bring a way to breathe and work slowly around the ruin. Do not clear the area with a shovel: a normal mining action destroys the suspicious block before you can extract its item. Expose one block at a time, switch to the Brush, and let the complete brushing animation finish.
Cold ocean ruins: suspicious gravel
Cold ocean ruins use suspicious gravel rather than suspicious sand. The same rule applies underwater: do not mine the gravel. Place yourself where you can keep the crosshair on the block for the full brushing period, because moving away or breaking it forfeits the contents.
Desert pyramids: suspicious sand and a reliable cluster
Desert pyramids are the most straightforward land-based target. A buried room in a desert pyramid contains six to eight suspicious sand blocks. Carefully remove surrounding ordinary sand, then brush the suspicious blocks individually. Avoid the pyramid’s central trap while excavating; opening a route from the side keeps you from accidentally dropping into the TNT chamber.
Desert wells: small archaeological deposits
Desert wells can also generate suspicious sand. Their deposits are smaller than the buried pyramid room, but a well is easy to recognize while travelling through a desert. Treat the sand around the well as structural material until you have identified which blocks are suspicious, then brush them rather than shoveling them out.

Trail ruins: suspicious gravel
Trail ruins generate suspicious gravel and are an important source of pottery sherds, including 20 pottery patterns. Some online guides describe trail ruins as generating suspicious sand; the Minecraft Wiki’s structure information identifies suspicious gravel, so use gravel as the expectation for current vanilla archaeology. The ruins are often partially buried, which means ordinary excavation is useful only for exposing the suspicious blocks—not for removing them.
How to use a Brush without losing the loot
Get the Brush
The Minecraft Wiki’s Brush article contains conflicting availability information. One page gives a recipe of one feather, one copper ingot and one stick arranged in a vertical line. Another passage says brushes cannot be crafted and are instead obtained by brushing suspicious blocks or found in trial chambers. Because this may vary by game version or reflect an inconsistency in the documentation, check your in-game recipe book first. If the recipe is unavailable in your installation, use the acquisition method supported by that version, including searching trial-chamber loot where applicable.

- Locate a naturally generated suspicious sand or suspicious gravel block in one of the structures listed above.
- Remove ordinary blocks around it with normal tools, leaving the suspicious block itself untouched.
- Stand close enough to keep the crosshair on the suspicious block for the entire interaction.
- Equip the Brush in your active hotbar slot.
Brush for the full duration
The Minecraft Wiki lists approximately 96 game ticks, or about 4.8 seconds, to brush one suspicious block. Each completed block uses one point of Brush durability. A third-party guide gives a much shorter “about one second” instruction, but that conflicts with the 96-tick figure; plan around the longer wiki timing so you do not release the action early.
- Use the Brush on the suspicious block and keep the use button held.
- Watch the brushing particles and animation rather than interrupting the action to move or switch items.
- Wait for the item to emerge and for the block to become ordinary sand or gravel.
- Repeat on the next suspicious block, checking your Brush durability before starting a large ruin.
Why a mined block gives nothing
Suspicious blocks are not an ore that can be silk-touched or collected for later use. A pickaxe or shovel destroys the block and drops nothing. Player-placed suspicious sand or gravel also yields nothing when brushed; only naturally generated suspicious blocks contain archaeology loot. If you accidentally break one, the item cannot be recovered from that block.

What vanilla archaeology can give you
Loot is tied to the structure, so the destination should match the item you want. The following lists the structure-specific contents documented for vanilla archaeology.
| Structure and block | Documented possible loot | Planning implication |
|---|---|---|
| Desert pyramid — suspicious sand | Pottery sherds, TNT, gunpowder, emeralds and diamonds | A good land target when you want several suspicious blocks together and a chance at valuables |
| Desert well — suspicious sand | Pottery sherds, bricks, emeralds, sticks and suspicious stew | Useful as an incidental find while crossing a desert; deposits are smaller |
| Trail ruins — suspicious gravel | Pottery sherds, with 20 documented patterns across the trail-ruin archaeology pool | Prioritize these ruins for pottery-pattern collecting |
| Archaeology overall | Sniffer eggs and four smithing templates are initially obtainable through archaeology | Do not discard suspicious blocks if you are collecting rare progression items |
Loot tables can change with game updates. The table reflects the documented structure associations available for this guide; verify the exact loot table against the version you are playing if a specific item is essential.
Expedition procedure for a ruin or pyramid
Before you leave
- Carry at least one Brush, and bring additional Brushes if your route includes many suspicious blocks because each completed block consumes durability.
- Take ordinary excavation tools for the surrounding sand, gravel and stone, but reserve them for non-suspicious blocks.
- For ocean ruins, bring reliable underwater breathing and visibility options appropriate to your edition and equipment.
- Leave inventory space for pottery sherds, templates, eggs and structure-specific loot.
- Mark the structure’s location before you begin; an exposed ruin can be difficult to relocate after the terrain has been cleared.
At the site
- Identify the structure: warm ocean ruin, cold ocean ruin, desert pyramid, desert well or trail ruin.
- Clear only ordinary blocks around the suspected archaeology layer.
- Pause whenever the block texture changes to suspicious sand or suspicious gravel.
- Brush each suspicious block completely, collect the item, and allow the block to convert to normal material.
- Search the newly exposed layer again before leaving; trail ruins and buried pyramid rooms can hide suspicious blocks beneath ordinary cover.
If nothing comes out
First check that you are brushing a naturally generated suspicious block rather than one placed by a player. Next confirm that you are using a Brush and not a shovel or pickaxe. If the block was mined, it has already been destroyed and cannot be restored by brushing the replacement sand or gravel. Finally, confirm the structure and game version: a location described as suspicious sand in one guide may actually use suspicious gravel in current trail-ruin generation.
Fossils in Cobblemon
Cobblemon adds actual fossils, but they are not part of vanilla Minecraft. According to third-party Cobblemon guides, fossils are recovered by brushing suspicious sand and suspicious gravel at prehistoric dig sites. Those sites can appear across deserts, jungles and the ocean floor, so a Cobblemon fossil search is broader than a vanilla desert-pyramid route.

Recovering a Cobblemon fossil
- Find a Cobblemon prehistoric dig site in a desert, jungle or ocean-floor setting.
- Identify the site’s suspicious sand or suspicious gravel.
- Use a Brush and complete the brushing interaction instead of mining the block.
- Collect the fossil and continue through the site while preserving every suspicious block.
Breaking a Cobblemon suspicious block with a pickaxe or shovel destroys the fossil. Cobblemon fossils have no crafting recipe, so brushing the dig-site block is the acquisition method described by those guides. Exact site distribution and loot can change with the Cobblemon release; consult the documentation shipped with your installed version when a particular fossil is missing.
Fossils in Better Archeology
Better Archeology uses a different set of fossil-bearing blocks. Its Brush can work on fossiliferous dirt, suspicious sand, suspicious dirt and suspicious red sand. The mod’s documented behavior says that completing a fossil and placing it in your base grants effects, making the finished fossil a functional display rather than only a collectible.
How to approach a Better Archeology site
- Locate a Better Archeology area containing one of the supported block types.
- Use the Brush on fossiliferous dirt, suspicious sand, suspicious dirt or suspicious red sand.
- Do not substitute a pickaxe or shovel for the Brush; preserve the block until the fossil has been extracted.
- Complete the fossil according to the mod’s process, then place it in your base if you want its documented effects.
Better Archeology details here come from third-party guide material rather than the mod’s own documentation, so treat block generation, effects and compatibility as version-dependent.

| Your goal | Best route | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Pottery, diamonds or other vanilla archaeology loot | Desert pyramids, desert wells and the appropriate ocean or trail ruin | Vanilla loot is tied to the structure’s suspicious-block table |
| Sniffer eggs or one of four smithing templates | Search vanilla archaeology sites and brush every naturally generated suspicious block | Archaeology is the initial source documented for these items |
| A collectible fossil in an unmodded world | There is no vanilla route | Fossil blocks do not generate in vanilla |
| Cobblemon fossils | Cobblemon prehistoric dig sites | Brush suspicious sand or gravel in deserts, jungles or ocean-floor sites |
| Fossils with base effects | Better Archeology fossil-bearing blocks | The mod supports fossiliferous dirt and several suspicious block types |
Common mistakes and fixes
“I mined the suspicious block and got nothing.”
That is expected behavior. Mining destroys suspicious sand or gravel. Find another naturally generated block and brush it in place.

“I placed suspicious sand and the Brush produced no item.”
Player-placed suspicious blocks do not contain archaeology loot. Only the blocks generated with the structure can be brushed for items.
Recommended Free Tools
“The brushing animation stops before the item appears.”
Hold the use action for the full approximately 4.8-second, 96-tick period documented by the Minecraft Wiki. Keep the crosshair on the block and avoid switching items or moving out of range.
“A guide says my trail ruin should have suspicious sand.”
Current wiki structure information identifies trail-ruin archaeology as suspicious gravel. Guides may be describing an older version, a different mod or an error. Check the block you are actually seeing and the version that generated your world.
“My Brush recipe is missing.”
The Brush documentation is internally inconsistent: one page lists the feather, copper-ingot and stick recipe, while another says brushes are not craftable and can be found through archaeology or in trial chambers. Check the in-game recipe book and your installed version’s item sources rather than assuming one rule applies to every release.
Bottom line for fossil hunters
In vanilla Minecraft, stop searching for a fossil structure: it does not exist. Search warm and cold ocean ruins, desert pyramids, desert wells and trail ruins for naturally generated suspicious sand or gravel, then use a Brush for the full interaction. Desert pyramids provide six to eight suspicious sand blocks in their buried room, trail ruins are valuable for pottery sherd patterns, and archaeology also supplies sniffer eggs and four smithing templates at the start of their progression. For real fossils, install a compatible mod: Cobblemon uses prehistoric dig sites, while Better Archeology uses several fossil-bearing dirt and suspicious-block types. In every case, brushing—not mining—is what preserves the reward.
