Yes. Minecraft has music, but it is not one single song. The game uses an evolving soundtrack of ambient pieces that fade in during play, music that can appear in the main menu, and separate tracks stored on music-disc items that you start with a jukebox.
The exact selection depends on the game version and update history. Official Minecraft announcements identify music by C418, Lena Raine, Kumi Tanioka, and Aaron Cherof, among others. They also document new background tracks and discs added over time, so a dated list should not be mistaken for a complete current inventory.

What “the Minecraft song” usually means
When someone asks whether Minecraft has a song, they may be remembering several different things. A quiet piano-like passage that appears while exploring is part of the ambient soundtrack. A track heard before entering a world may be main-menu music. A song playing from a block in someone’s base is probably a music disc running in a jukebox. Those are all Minecraft music, but they work differently.
Minecraft therefore has a soundtrack rather than a single theme song that plays continuously. Official material names multiple background compositions and separate music-disc tracks. The game’s music has also expanded through updates, while albums and remix projects have made selected tracks available for listening outside the game.

How ambient Minecraft music works during play
Ambient music is designed to be intermittent. Minecraft’s January 2021 official feature describes music fading in during play instead of running constantly from the moment a world loads. That pacing leaves long stretches for environmental sounds—steps, weather, mobs, water, and tools—rather than placing a permanent song underneath every action.
Because the system is intentionally occasional, not hearing music does not mean the game has no soundtrack. A track may begin later, end, and leave another quiet interval before music returns. The experience is closer to a rotating atmosphere than to a radio station that never stops.

The ambient pieces are part of the game’s built-in audio, so the player does not need to find an item before hearing them. Their appearance is controlled by the game’s soundtrack system, while the player’s audio settings determine whether that music can be heard. The cited official descriptions explain the fade-in behavior but do not establish one universal schedule or a complete, version-independent list of every trigger.
Main-menu music is part of the soundtrack too
Minecraft music is not limited to active worlds. In an October 20, 2021 snapshot announcement, Minecraft said that new music by Lena Raine and Kumi Tanioka had been added to the Overworld in survival mode and to the main menu.

That distinction matters when identifying a remembered track. Someone who heard a melody while choosing a world may be recalling menu music, while someone who heard it after spawning may be recalling an Overworld track. Both are official Minecraft compositions, but they are associated with different parts of the game.
Music discs let you choose a specific track
Music discs are the player-controlled side of Minecraft’s music system. Instead of waiting for ambient music to fade in, you place a disc in a jukebox and start that particular track intentionally. The sound comes from an in-game item, which makes discs useful for bases, multiplayer gatherings, themed rooms, and demonstrations where everyone should hear the same selection.

That “13” is a historical count from that article, not a claim about the number available in every current edition or update.
How to play a disc
- Obtain a music disc that your version supports.
- Place a jukebox in the world.
- Use the disc on the jukebox to start playback.
- Let the track play as an intentional, player-started piece rather than waiting for the ambient system.
The official feature also explained one historical way to obtain discs: a creeper could drop a random disc when it was killed by a skeleton or stray arrow. It mentioned chest locations for other discs as well. Those acquisition details and the 13-disc count describe the state covered by the January 2021 article; later updates added more discs, so they should not be treated as a complete modern acquisition guide.

Who composed Minecraft’s music?
Minecraft’s music comes from several composers and creative periods. The names below are tied to specific official announcements and examples, not presented as an exhaustive credits list.
| Composer | Examples identified in official Minecraft material | Context |
|---|---|---|
| C418 | The disc tracks discussed in the January 2021 feature | The article credits the disc music it discusses to C418, except Pigstep. |
| Lena Raine | Pigstep; otherside; Creator; Creator (Music Box); Infinite Amethyst | Her work appears in music-disc additions, background or menu-related announcements, and later remix projects. |
| Kumi Tanioka | New Overworld and menu music announced in 2021; Comforting Memories | She is also discussed in the official Tricky Trials composition article. |
| Aaron Cherof | Precipice | The 24w18a snapshot notes identify this disc, and the composition article discusses his approach. |
| Amos Roddy | Tears | The track is named in the 2025 Pixel Drift remix announcement. |
The composers do not all write in the same way. In the official article “Composing the Trial Chambers,” Kumi Tanioka said, “I immediately thought of a motif for a Minecraft song!” Aaron Cherof explained that, for the game’s 15-year anniversary, he wanted to celebrate with mostly minimalistic instrumentation. Those comments help explain why the soundtrack can move between sparse, reflective pieces and more deliberately themed compositions.
How the soundtrack has grown over time
Minecraft’s music catalog is a moving target. The following milestones show additions documented by official announcements; they are not a current total of every track or disc.
| Date or version | Documented addition | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| January 2021 | 13 music discs | The count stated in the disc feature at publication time. |
| October 20, 2021 | New Overworld and main-menu music by Lena Raine and Kumi Tanioka, plus Otherside | A dated announcement of additions, not a full soundtrack inventory. |
| 24w18a snapshot, 2024 | Nine new background tracks and three new discs | Snapshot additions: Featherfall, Deeper, Endless, and Pokopoko are among the background tracks; the discs are Precipice by Aaron Cherof, Creator by Lena Raine, and Creator (Music Box) by Lena Raine. |
| September 13, 2024 | Pixel Genesis, a set of 12 retro-game-inspired remixes | The number refers to remixes in that release, not 12 new in-game songs. |
| September 3, 2025 | Pixel Drift, a remix album of 11 Minecraft tracks | The album includes examples such as Kumi Tanioka’s Comforting Memories, Lena Raine’s otherside, and Amos Roddy’s Tears. |
The 24w18a notes are especially easy to misread. “Nine new background tracks” means nine pieces were added in that snapshot; it does not mean Minecraft has only nine background tracks. Likewise, “three new discs” describes that update’s additions, not the complete disc collection.

Original game tracks, albums, and remixes are different things
There are three useful ways to encounter Minecraft music:
- In-game ambient music: background pieces that fade in during play through the game’s normal soundtrack system.
- Music discs: specific in-game items that let a player start an individual track with a jukebox.
- External releases: digital albums and playlists containing original tracks or remixed versions for listening away from the game.
Minecraft’s official announcements point listeners to streaming services for releases such as Pixel Drift and Pixel Genesis. The September 18, 2023 lofi announcement likewise described playlists built from original music from Minecraft, Minecraft Dungeons, and Minecraft Legends, remixed for listening outside the games.
A remix should not be confused with a newly added in-game composition. For example, Pixel Genesis is described as 12 retro-game-inspired remixes, while Pixel Drift is described as 11 remixed Minecraft tracks. Those numbers describe the albums, not the number of songs installed in a particular Minecraft version.

If you remember a calm piece during exploration, it is reasonable to identify it as ambient Minecraft music, but the title alone does not identify which composition it was. If you remember a song that played on demand from a block, it was likely a music disc, yet the memory still does not establish which disc without more clues. A melody from the title screen may belong to the menu collection introduced or expanded in a particular update.
There is no single, timeless answer to “How many Minecraft songs are there?” The official examples span multiple updates, snapshots, editions, and release formats. The available announcements establish that the catalog has expanded, but they do not provide one exhaustive, current count covering every edition and version. Any list claiming a universal total should state its version and date.
A practical way to find the kind of music you want
If you want surprise and atmosphere
Play normally and allow the ambient system to do its work. This is the mode that produces occasional, unplanned musical moments while you explore or build.
If you want a particular track on demand
Use a music disc with a jukebox. This is the only mode described in the official material as intentionally triggered by the player, and it separates a chosen song from the game’s intermittent background system.
If you want to listen away from the game
Look for the officially announced digital albums and playlists. Check whether you are selecting an original game recording or a remix, because the two formats can use the same underlying track while presenting different arrangements.
