What is the Sift, and when is it coming to Minecraft?
Mojang confirmed that the Sift, a dimension first featured in the separate action-adventure game Minecraft Dungeons II, is coming to Minecraft in 2027. Xbox Wire described it as new content for Minecraft Java and Bedrock—not as a separate sequel. The announcement called it the first new Minecraft dimension in “over 14 years.” Xbox Wire’s September 26, 2026 announcement gives the year, but not a release day or month.
The announcement did not provide much detail about how players will access the Sift in Minecraft or how that version will differ from its appearance in Minecraft Dungeons II. Those details remain unannounced in the cited material.

Is Minecraft 2 coming out?
No Minecraft 2 has been announced in the official sources reviewed as of October 8, 2026. The confirmed 2027 Sift addition is planned for the existing Minecraft game, and its appearance in Minecraft Dungeons II does not make that game a sequel to Minecraft.
A change in version numbers is not evidence of a sequel, either. Microsoft’s Bedrock creator notes say that 1.26.0 was the first release under the new numbering system and that 2026 releases begin with “26.” The documentation also retains the more detailed 1.26.xx.yyz format for API and platform contexts. Microsoft’s Bedrock versioning notes explain the convention.

Why is there no Minecraft 2?
There is no current public explanation from Mojang establishing that a sequel will never happen. A frequently cited comment is historical: in a TIME interview published November 14, 2016, Mojang lead developer Jens Bergensten said, “In a sense, I feel that if we were to make a ‘Minecraft 2,’ we’d be our own worst enemy, and open up the field for any creative block building game to step in and take some of our players.” The 2016 interview also discussed adding things gradually and growing Minecraft in multiple directions. Those remarks offer context for the approach at that time; they are not a new statement of policy or a current promise.
