Minecraft’s third game drop of 2025 was The Copper Age, released September 30. It brought back the Copper Golem—one of the losing candidates in the 2021 Mob Vote—as an item-sorting helper, and gave copper a new equipment tier between stone and iron. The drop also added Copper Chests, shelves and decorative copper blocks. It is available in Java Edition 1.21.9 and Bedrock Edition 1.21.111.
What was Minecraft’s third update in 2025?
Mojang called the drop The Copper Age. It launched on September 30, 2025, for both Java and Bedrock; the corresponding release-note versions are Java 1.21.9 and Bedrock 1.21.111. Mojang’s September 2025 recap announced the date, and its update overview describes the additions. If you do not see the content, update Minecraft to the latest version for your edition.

What does the Copper Golem do?
The Copper Golem moves items from Copper Chests into nearby regular or trapped chests, provided a destination chest is empty or already contains that item type. It can carry a stack of up to 16 items and visit up to 10 chests in sequence. Its search area extends 32 blocks horizontally and 8 blocks vertically. If it cannot find a matching chest, it waits seven seconds before trying again. These are mechanics listed in Mojang’s Java release notes.
How to use it for sorting
- Spawn a Copper Golem by placing a Jack o’Lantern or carved pumpkin on top of a copper block.
- Put the items you want sorted into a Copper Chest.
- Place regular or trapped chests within the golem’s search area. A chest must be empty or hold only the same item type for the golem to deposit that item.
- Let the golem carry items from the Copper Chest to eligible destinations. It handles up to 16 items per carried stack and checks up to 10 chests in sequence.

Did the Copper Golem lose the Mob Vote?
Yes. The Copper Golem was one of three candidates in Minecraft’s 2021 Mob Vote and lost to the Allay. Mojang’s release notes establish its return and new sorting role; the vote result and the characterization of its comeback as the first for a losing Mob Vote candidate were reported by Windows Central in July 2025. Rather than revive its original button-pressing concept, Mojang reworked it into a practical inventory helper.

Copper equipment between stone and iron
Copper tools occupy a middle step in progression: they work faster and last longer than stone tools, but deal the same damage as stone tools. They can be repaired with copper ingots. Copper armor has more durability than leather and gold armor, while its enchantability is slightly lower than iron’s. The official overview places copper’s speed and durability between stone and iron; Mojang’s Java release notes give the equipment details. Copper also adds horse armor.

Storage, sorting and building
Copper Chests provide the golem’s source storage. A Copper Chest is crafted from one chest and eight copper ingots; it oxidizes over time and can be waxed. Shelves hold up to three item stacks, and powered shelves can work together to swap multiple items in a player’s hotbar. The drop also includes copper decorations and light sources, giving copper uses beyond equipment and automation. Details are in Mojang’s Java and Bedrock notes.
