It was a strong upgrade for its time—but it is a legacy release, distinct from the current Xbox game simply titled Minecraft.
What did reviewers think of Minecraft: Xbox One Edition?
GameSpot reviewer Cameron Woolsey scored Minecraft: Xbox One Edition 9/10, or “Superb.” The review’s strongest points were the core cycle of building and exploration, the freedom to create, and how readily players could learn the game’s systems. Read GameSpot’s review.

A welcoming way into the sandbox
The edition’s tutorial and contextual guidance help newcomers get oriented. Its console crafting interface also makes recipes easier to discover than trial-and-error crafting: when a player has the necessary materials, they can select the item they want to make. That guidance lowers the initial learning curve without taking away the open-ended building and exploration that define the game.
A substantial step up from Xbox 360
GameSpot praised the Xbox One version’s cleaner visuals, longer view distance and 60-frames-per-second presentation compared with Xbox 360. These are the reviewer’s observations about the two console editions in the review period, not a current performance comparison with the latest versions of Minecraft.

The review’s main reservation
At the time of the review, the PC edition had newer content. That was a historical gap between versions, not a statement about what content is available today.
What did the Xbox One Edition add over Xbox 360?
Microsoft announced a digital launch on September 5, 2014, and said Xbox One worlds could be up to 36 times larger than Xbox 360 worlds. The launch announcement also described transferring Xbox 360 worlds to the new edition. These are launch-era specifications, not a guarantee about present-day services or compatibility. - Create and explore your very own world where the only limit is what you can imagine
The release was also sold as a packaged disc later that holiday season. That physical release matters if you are specifically looking for the legacy Xbox One Edition rather than the current game.
How did multiplayer and console features work?
At launch, Xbox Wire listed four-player local split-screen and up to eight players over Xbox Live. The announcement also highlighted controls mapped to the Xbox One gamepad, a tutorial island, contextual help, straightforward online setup and achievements. These are details of the 2014 edition and its launch announcement; they should not be read as current online-service guarantees. Xbox Wire’s launch details.

A separate Xbox Wire overview noted more than 20 texture packs, mash-ups and skins at the time, including the Xbox-exclusive Halo Mash-up Pack. That launch-era figure does not establish that every add-on remains available to buy. Read the Xbox One Edition overview.
Is Xbox One Edition the same as the current Minecraft on Xbox?
No. Minecraft: Xbox One Edition is the older legacy console release. The current Xbox game is marketed simply as Minecraft and is the Bedrock release. Microsoft’s October 2021 Minecraft Franchise Fact Sheet defines legacy editions as versions that remain playable but are no longer supported, receive no updates and do not connect to other versions. The same fact sheet describes Bedrock as enabling coordinated updates and cross-platform multiplayer across most devices; that description is dated to the document and does not verify later changes.
Rank #4
- Share the experience with 4 players split-screen on one console or up to 8 players over Xbox Live
- Bigger worlds, faster draw time, and greater draw distance
- Native 1080p at 60 FPS
- The widest range of downloadable content on a console
Choose based on what you want: the legacy edition is for someone intentionally seeking this specific older console version, while the current release is the relevant choice for the unified, cross-platform Minecraft experience described by Microsoft.

If you want this exact release, look for the full product name Minecraft: Xbox One Edition, not a listing that says only Minecraft. Microsoft documented a retail disc release, but current stock, prices, seller reliability, disc condition and regional compatibility are not established here.
