Choose Java Edition if you play on Windows, macOS, or Linux and want community mods, custom servers, or access to older released versions. Choose Bedrock Edition if you want to play across supported consoles, mobile devices, and Windows, or need controller, touch, or console split-screen support. If you plan to play with friends, find out which edition they use first: Java and Bedrock do not share standard multiplayer games.
What’s the difference between Java and Bedrock?
They are separate editions of Minecraft with different supported platforms and multiplayer ecosystems. A Java player cannot join a standard Bedrock game, and a Bedrock player cannot join a standard Java game. Minecraft’s official comparison puts it plainly: “This means that Java and Bedrock players can’t play together – so make sure to ask your friends which version they have.”
Cross-play works within each edition’s supported platforms: Java players on Windows, Mac, and Linux can play together, while Bedrock supports cross-play among supported Bedrock platforms. That makes your device and your friends’ edition more important than a general claim that one version is better.
Which devices can run each edition?

Platform availability and device requirements can change. Check the official listing for the specific device you own before buying. On consoles, online multiplayer may also require a separate subscription from the console platform; confirm that platform’s current requirements.

Which edition is better for playing with friends?
Get the edition your group uses. Java and Bedrock cannot join the same standard hosted game, including their respective Realms. If your group spans consoles, phones, and Windows PCs, Bedrock is often the practical choice, provided everyone has a supported Bedrock version. If everyone plays Java on Windows, Mac, or Linux, Java is the fit.
For private hosted play, select a Realm that matches the players’ edition: Java Realms are for Java players, and Bedrock Realms or Realms Plus are for Bedrock players. A Realm does not bridge the editions. Check the current service details and any platform requirements before subscribing.

Mods, add-ons, and customization
Java: community mods and custom servers
Java is the stronger choice if you want community-made mods, custom servers, and a broad range of ways to alter gameplay. Mods are third-party changes, so compatibility and support depend on the mod and the version you use. Minecraft Help notes: “As modding is not officially supported, Minecraft Support cannot assist with issues arising from mod usage.”
Bedrock: Marketplace and add-ons
Bedrock offers Marketplace content and add-ons as routes to customize the game. Minecraft’s add-on guide describes add-ons that change world content. Choose this route if you prefer content and customization within Bedrock’s ecosystem rather than Java’s third-party mod scene.

Controls, split-screen, and versions
- Controller or touch: Bedrock supports controller and touch input. The current PC store comparison says native controller support is not included with Java.
- Local multiplayer: Bedrock supports split-screen on consoles, making it the more suitable option for console couch play.
- Older releases and snapshots: Java lets players select among released versions and try snapshots. Bedrock uses preview or beta channels alongside the stable version. Back up worlds before testing preview builds or snapshots.
These differences matter most if you already know you want a particular input method or version. Otherwise, decide first based on device and multiplayer compatibility.

Minecraft’s official PC store currently presents Java & Bedrock Edition as a bundle. - Ask friends which edition they use, or confirm the edition required by the server you want to join.
- If you will play alone, choose based on your priorities: Java for community mods, custom servers, or released-version selection; Bedrock for controller or touch support, console split-screen, and cross-play across supported Bedrock platforms.
- For a PC purchase, check the live bundle listing and requirements; for a console or mobile purchase, use the listing for that specific platform.
