A ladder is a climbable block for vertical movement. It occupies the face of a supporting block rather than filling the whole block space, so you can use it to move up or down a wall, shaft, tower or room. Its most important limitation is that it needs a suitable wall face: a ladder is attached to the side of a full solid block, not placed freely in mid-air.

Ladders are useful because they provide controlled two-way travel. You do not need to jump from ledge to ledge on the way down, and a properly installed shaft can be climbed repeatedly without rebuilding the route. They also provide limited fall protection: entering a ladder’s volume reduces your downward speed and can catch you during a fall. The narrow top edge is not a safe landing platform by itself, so a ladder should not be treated as immunity to fall damage.
How to craft ladders
Recipe and yield
- Open a crafting grid.
- Place seven sticks in an H pattern: three sticks down the left column, one stick in the centre, and three sticks down the right column. The centre column’s top and bottom slots remain empty.

Making the sticks
Sticks are the only ingredient in the recipe. Convert wooden planks into sticks in your crafting grid, then arrange the sticks in the H pattern. Because the recipe uses no special wood type, you can make ladders from ordinary wooden materials available early in a new world.
Finding ladders without crafting
Ladders can also appear in generated structures. The cited official guidance lists village churches, strongholds, end ships and igloos as places where you may find them. Structure generation and the number of ladders available are not guaranteed, so crafting remains the predictable way to prepare a specific shaft.

Where a ladder can be placed
Use a full solid block face
Stand next to the wall face you want to use, select the ladder, and place it on that face. The supporting block must present a full solid surface. If the placement outline does not appear, move your crosshair to the side of a suitable block rather than its top or bottom face, and check that another block is not occupying the target space.
Each ladder has a facing direction determined by the face on which it was placed. A vertical run normally uses the same wall, so place successive ladders on that wall while moving up or down the shaft. If you change walls, the ladder’s orientation changes with the new supporting face.
Java and Bedrock state differences
The two editions expose ladder state differently. Java Edition includes a facing direction and a waterlogged state; Bedrock Edition uses facing-direction metadata. These implementation details matter for technical builds, commands and redstone-adjacent designs, even though ordinary placement still means attaching a ladder to a solid wall.

Water requires particular care. The cited reference notes that waterlogged ladders behave differently in Bedrock and cannot be climbed there. Do not assume that a ladder placed in or filled with water will function like a dry ladder across both editions. Test the exact arrangement in the edition and version you are using before relying on it as an escape route.
Trapdoors above a ladder
In Java Edition, an opened trapdoor directly above a ladder can become climbable when its orientation matches the ladder. This can help finish a compact shaft with a hatch, but both the position and orientation matter. If the trapdoor is closed, misaligned or placed with a different relationship to the ladder, do not expect the same climbable connection.
How to climb, stop and descend
Basic climbing input
Press the movement input toward the ladder. Your character then climbs upward while the input is held and descends when you move down or release the upward movement. The exact keyboard, controller or touch binding depends on your platform; the important action is directional input into the ladder rather than a separate ladder command.
Climbing in a one-block shaft
A 1×1 shaft can be climbed by holding jump. In that confined space, the jump input can move you upward without a separate horizontal direction. This is useful when the shaft leaves no room to strafe, but it does not remove the need to install the ladder correctly on one of the shaft’s walls.
Bedrock Edition supports faster climbing while jump is held, according to the cited mechanics reference. Treat that as an edition-specific behavior: do not assume Java Edition produces the same speed simply because both versions use the same ladder recipe.

How to avoid falling off
Hold the sneak input to keep your character attached to the ladder. Sneaking is the dependable way to pause on a ladder, inspect the next block, or prevent yourself from walking off the top while building. It is also useful when you need to stop briefly in a vertical shaft rather than descend immediately.
When approaching the top, slow down and confirm that the landing block is clear. A ladder only occupies a thin vertical surface, so stepping beyond its upper edge can leave you standing on a narrow ledge or falling into the shaft. Build a proper landing or opening rather than relying on the ladder’s top edge to catch you.
Using ladders to control falls
What a ladder can catch
Entering a ladder’s volume during a fall reduces your downward speed. If a ladder is installed along the wall below you and you move into it before reaching the ground, it can catch the player and turn a dangerous drop into a climbable stop.
Why the top edge is still dangerous
The protective effect applies to the ladder’s climbable volume, not to every nearby surface. Landing on the narrow top edge does not provide the same protection, and fall damage can still occur. Keep the ladder continuous through the expected fall path and aim for its face, not its upper rim.

Practical fall-safety setup
- Extend the ladder far enough below the work area that a missed step can enter the ladder’s space.
- Keep the wall face unobstructed; a block, trapdoor or fluid arrangement can interrupt access.
- Use sneak when working at the shaft lip or transitioning onto a landing.
- Do not test a high drop with valuable equipment until the ladder run and landing have been checked.
Building a dependable mining shaft
The most reliable ladder shaft is built as part of the excavation rather than after a dangerous hole already exists. Recommended construction sequence
- Choose the shaft’s wall and confirm that it is made of full solid blocks suitable for ladder attachment.
- Dig downward one block at a time instead of opening an unprotected deep drop.
- After each block is removed, place a ladder on the chosen wall face before continuing. The ladder run should have no skipped block.

- At the surface, create a clear landing and opening so the top ladder connects to a safe floor rather than a one-block lip.

Troubleshooting placement and climbing
The ladder will not place

- Occupied target space: Remove the block or object where the ladder would sit, then try again.
- Wrong approach: Move close enough to target the vertical side, not the floor beside it.
- Edition-specific arrangement: If water or a trapdoor is involved, test a dry, unobstructed ladder first. Java and Bedrock do not expose every ladder state identically.
The player will not climb
- Press movement toward the ladder instead of away from it.
- Check for a missing ladder in the next block of the run.
- Remove or review waterlogged arrangements, especially in Bedrock, where the cited reference says waterlogged ladders cannot be climbed.
- If a trapdoor is part of the transition in Java, verify that it is open, directly above the ladder and oriented to match it.
The player keeps slipping or falling
- Hold sneak to remain attached while pausing or building.
