Minecraft Launcher Won’t Open on Windows PC: Fixes for Windows 10 and 11

If Minecraft Launcher does nothing, closes immediately, or never reaches the sign-in screen, work through the fixes in this order: align the Microsoft account used by Launcher, Microsoft Store, and Xbox; install pending Launcher updates; use Windows app Repair and then Reset; run WSReset when Store installation or caching is failing; and reinstall from an official Minecraft or Xbox route. This sequence separates account and dependency problems from a damaged installation without jumping straight to an uninstall.

First, identify which failure you have

“Won’t open” can describe several different faults. Identifying the stage prevents you from applying a destructive fix to the wrong problem.

The Launcher is a hub for the PC editions, so a successful installation does not by itself prove that the signed-in account has the right license. Treat opening, installation, and entitlement as separate checkpoints.

1. Make the three-account check before changing the installation

Minecraft’s troubleshooting guidance identifies two frequent causes: missing dependencies and signing in with the wrong Microsoft account. Check all three applications using the same account before repairing or removing anything.

#1 Best Overall
Minecraft | Java & Bedrock Deluxe Collection | Windows Digital Code
  • DELUXE COLLECTION — Includes Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition, three Bedrock add-ons, three exclusive Character Creator items, and 700 Minecoins.
  • CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that’s unique in every playthrough.
  • EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world filled with surprises.
  • SURVIVE THE ADVENTURE — Face mysterious foes, travel across exciting landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
  • PLAY TOGETHER — Play cross-platform with friends in Bedrock Edition on console, mobile, and PC, or join community servers in Java Edition on PC, Mac, and Linux. Online console multiplayer requires a platform-specific subscription (sold separately).
  1. Open Minecraft Launcher if it stays open long enough to show an account, and note the Microsoft email or profile displayed.
  2. Open Microsoft Store, select the profile icon, and verify that the Store is using that same Microsoft account.
  3. Open the Xbox app, select its profile, and verify the same account there as well.
  4. Confirm that this account owns Minecraft for PC or has the required PC Game Pass access. If another family member bought the game, the purchasing account—not merely the Windows user account—must be the one checked for entitlement.

If one application is using a different account, sign out of that application and sign back in with the licensed account. Close and reopen the Launcher after the change. A missing game tile or Play button after sign-in is usually an entitlement or account-alignment issue, not proof that the Windows executable is broken.

2. Install the Launcher update from Microsoft Store Library

An outdated Store package can fail to start or can remain stuck on an older build. The official download guidance says to update the Launcher from the Store Library when it does not update normally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Microsoft Store.
  2. Select Library (on some Windows 10 layouts this may be shown as Downloads and updates).
  3. Choose Get updates or the equivalent update control.
  4. Let Microsoft Store finish installing the Minecraft Launcher update and any related Store updates.
  5. Restart Windows, then launch Minecraft from the Start menu rather than an old desktop shortcut.

If the Library shows a pending update that repeatedly pauses, leave the Store open until the operation reports completion. Do not uninstall while an update is still queued; first determine whether the Store itself is the failing component.

3. Repair the Windows app, then use Reset only if necessary

Windows provides a non-destructive recovery path before a reinstall. Repair is the first choice; Reset is the next step if Repair does not restore launching.

Rank #2
Minecraft | Java & Bedrock Ultimate Collection | Windows Digital Code
  • ULTIMATE COLLECTION — Includes Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition, five Bedrock add-ons, five exclusive Character Creator items, and 1000 Minecoins.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Apps > Installed apps (Windows 10 may label this Apps & features).
  3. Find Minecraft Launcher, select the three-dot menu, and choose Advanced options.
  4. Select Repair. Wait for Windows to finish, then try the Launcher.
  5. If it still will not open, return to the same page and choose Reset, then confirm the prompt.
  6. Start the Launcher again and sign in with the licensed Microsoft account.

Repair targets the app installation while keeping its registered state. Windows labels Reset as a deeper app-data cleanup, so expect to sign in again and reapply Launcher preferences. Reset is still less disruptive than removing the application and is the documented recovery action for Windows installation errors.

4. Run WSReset when Microsoft Store behavior is the problem

Use WSReset for Store-specific symptoms: the Launcher cannot be installed from Microsoft Store, an update remains stuck, or Store pages behave incorrectly. It is not a replacement for Repair when the Launcher is already installed but will not launch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Enter WSReset and press Enter.
  3. Wait while Windows resets the Store cache. A command window may appear briefly; do not close it.
  4. Microsoft Store should reopen when the reset completes. Return to Library and try the Launcher update or installation again.

After the cache reset, repeat the account check if the Store profile changed or asks you to sign in. If the Store still refuses the installation, use the Xbox app or the official Download Minecraft page instead of repeatedly retrying the same failed Store transaction.

5. Reinstall from an official route when the package is damaged

Uninstalling removes the installed Launcher package, so use it after account verification, updating, Repair, Reset, and—where relevant—WSReset. Reinstalling is appropriate when the app closes immediately, Repair and Reset make no difference, or an installation is visibly corrupted.

Minecraft | Standard Edition | XBOX Digital Code
  • CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that is unique in every playthrough.
  • EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world full of surprises.
  • SURVIVAL ADVENTURES — Face mysterious foes, travel across varied landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
  • PLAY TOGETHER — Play solo or join friends in local split-screen and cross-platform play across console, mobile, and PC. Online multiplayer supports up to 8 players.
  • COMMUNITY PLAY — Connect with players on community servers, or subscribe to Realms Plus (sold separately) to play with up to 10 friends on a private server.
  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Select Minecraft Launcher, open its menu, and choose Uninstall. Confirm the removal.
  3. Restart Windows so a pending package operation is completed.
  4. Install the Launcher through one official route: the Xbox app or the official Download Minecraft page. If Microsoft Store installation failed, switching to one of these routes is specifically recommended.
  5. After installation, open the new Launcher and sign in with the same licensed Microsoft account used during the account check.

Do not download a replacement installer from an unofficial mirror. A second copy from an unknown source can add a separate account, update, or security problem and makes it harder to tell whether the official package is working.

6. Match the remedy to the dependency and symptom

The Launcher, Microsoft Store, Xbox app, and Windows gaming components can each be involved. The table below keeps the recovery action proportional to the failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Dependency or state Clue Action Reversibility
Microsoft account entitlement No game tile or Play button; different profiles in Store and Xbox Align accounts and confirm ownership or PC Game Pass access Fully reversible
Launcher update Old build, update pending, or app stops before its window appears Microsoft Store > Library > Get updates Reversible
Launcher app state Window opens then closes or remains unresponsive Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Launcher > Advanced options > Repair Low impact
Launcher app data Repair completes but behavior is unchanged Use Advanced options > Reset, then sign in again App data is cleared
Microsoft Store cache Store install/update fails or Store behaves abnormally Run WSReset, reopen Store, retry Cache reset
Damaged installation Repeated launch failure after Repair and Reset Uninstall and reinstall through Xbox or the official Minecraft download page Most disruptive

This order matters: account checks and updates can solve the problem without touching local app data, while uninstalling too early destroys the easiest evidence about whether the Store or entitlement system was at fault.

7. What to do for common Windows 10 and Windows 11 variations

Settings labels differ

Windows 11 normally uses Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Windows 10 commonly displays Apps & features. The Minecraft Launcher entry and its Advanced options page are the important destinations; the wording around them can vary by Windows update.

  • The Nether and all its inhabitants. Fight Ghasts and make friends with Pigmen
  • Cross platform play for up to five players between Pocket Edition and Windows 10
  • Revamped touch controls, controller support, and a controller mapping screen
  • Enhanced Weather effects! Accumulating snow and more

The shortcut is stale

After an update or reinstall, an old taskbar or desktop shortcut may point to a removed package. Search for Minecraft Launcher from Start and launch that result. If it works, unpin the old shortcut and pin the current app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Store and Xbox profiles disagree

Do not assume that the Windows account shown at sign-in is the account that purchased the game. Check the profile menu in both Microsoft Store and Xbox, sign out of the incorrect profile, and repeat the ownership check before reinstalling.

8. Recovery branches when a step fails

Repair is unavailable

If Advanced options does not show Repair or Reset, Windows may not recognize the package as a Store app. Skip directly to the official reinstall route rather than using a random third-party uninstaller.

Reset finishes but the Launcher still closes

Confirm that the reset actually completed, restart Windows, and test once more from the Start menu. If the same behavior remains, proceed to uninstall and reinstall; repeating Reset will not repair a package that is missing or damaged.

Microsoft Store cannot complete installation

Verify the Store account, run WSReset, restart, and try the Xbox app or official Download Minecraft page. Keep the account consistent across whichever route you use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Launcher opens but access is missing

Return to the three-account check. A successful launch with no Play button points to licensing, subscription access, or the wrong Microsoft account. Reinstalling the app does not transfer ownership between accounts.

9. When to contact Minecraft Support

Contact Minecraft Support if the Launcher still will not open after the official sequence: account alignment, Store Library updates, Windows Repair, Windows Reset, the appropriate WSReset cache reset, and an official reinstall. Include the Windows version, whether the app produces a window or closes immediately, which account was verified, which installation route you used, and the exact step that failed. This information lets support distinguish an entitlement issue from a Store or package failure.

Support is also the correct escalation point when the official download page itself cannot provide a working Launcher, when installation repeatedly fails through both documented routes, or when an error message persists after a clean reinstall. Avoid deleting unrelated game folders or changing system files while waiting for guidance; those actions can remove useful diagnostic information without addressing the account or dependency problem.
