Bedrock’s brightness filters use a 0–15 light-level range. Microsoft’s official hostile/night example sets min: 0 and max: 7. A block whose evaluated brightness is above 7 therefore fails that particular hostile brightness filter. In practical terms, level 8 or brighter blocks the documented hostile rule on that block.
That is a rule example, not a promise that every hostile entity uses exactly the same limits. A different entity can have a different filter, and spawning can still be prevented or permitted by conditions unrelated to brightness. Treat “hostile mobs stop at light level 8” as a precise Bedrock answer for the documented 0–7 rule, not as a universal statement about every mob, version or spawning method.

How Minecraft’s brightness filter works
The 0–15 domain
Bedrock’s minecraft:brightness_filter component accepts minimum and maximum values from 0 through 15. The game evaluates the light at the place where an entity would spawn and compares it with the rule’s range. A rule with a maximum of 7 accepts values from 0 to 7; a surface evaluated at 8 or higher fails that brightness test.
The relevant value is the brightness on the spawning surface, not the name or appearance of the lamp nearby. A torch, lantern, glowstone block, sea lantern or another source matters because it changes the measured light where the mob would stand. A lamp outside the spawning area may leave a dark square inside it, while a carefully placed source can raise only the blocks that need to be protected.

| Documented Bedrock example | Brightness range | Weather setting | What the example demonstrates |
|---|---|---|---|
| Night-only hostile mobs | 0–7 | adjust_for_weather: false |
The example accepts darkness through light level 7 and does not adjust the brightness test for weather. |
| Day-only passive mobs | 8–15 | adjust_for_weather: true |
The example accepts brighter conditions and enables weather adjustment. |
Microsoft describes the hostile range as mobs “typically” spawning in darkness at light level 0–7, and the entity-spawning deep dive labels the concrete example “Night only (Hostile Mobs).” The passive range is likewise an example of a day-only rule. Neither example should be read as a list of every entity’s settings.
Why a lit area can still produce mobs
Brightness is one gate in a larger spawn rule. If you light a floor and mobs continue to appear, do not immediately assume the light reading is wrong. Check the other gates in the order below.
Biome and habitat
Entities can require a particular biome or habitat. Raising the light above a hostile rule’s maximum removes the brightness match, but it cannot make an otherwise valid habitat invalid—or make an invalid habitat valid. A cave, surface, water area or structure can have its own entity requirements.

Difficulty and game state
Difficulty is a separate condition. A brightness-correct floor can still behave differently when the world’s difficulty changes, because the spawning rule may require a particular difficulty or because the available entity set changes.
Player distance
Natural spawning is evaluated in relation to players. If you are too close, too far away or positioned differently from the area you are testing, the result can change even when the light is identical. Test from the intended AFK or observation position rather than standing on the spawning platform while diagnosing it.
Density limits and mob caps
Density limits can prevent a new entity from appearing even when every local condition passes. Conversely, moving or removing mobs elsewhere can make a previously quiet area active. Check nearby caves, dark rooms and other loaded spaces before concluding that a lamp failed.
Delays and herd settings
Some rules include delays between attempts or herd settings that control group behavior. A valid platform may therefore remain empty for a while, or produce a group only after the rule’s other checks line up. Do not use one short observation as proof that a floor is permanently spawn-proof or permanently active.
Entity-specific filters
Special filters can narrow where and when an entity spawns. The official examples are intentionally simple illustrations of brightness; an actual entity definition can add requirements that a general “hostile” or “passive” label does not reveal.

Weather adjustment: when rain or thunder matters
The brightness filter can include an adjust_for_weather option. In Microsoft’s hostile example it is false, so that example does not enable weather adjustment. In the passive day example it is true, making weather relevant to the evaluation.
This setting is not a universal weather rule. Rain or thunder affects the brightness test only when the entity’s rule enables weather adjustment. If you are comparing a clear day with a storm, identify the entity’s setting before attributing a change to the sky. A weather change also does not override biome, distance, density or other filters.
Java Edition and Bedrock Edition are not interchangeable
The current first-party material used for these numeric examples is Bedrock documentation. It defines the 0–15 brightness-filter domain and shows the 0–7 hostile and 8–15 passive examples. It does not provide a current first-party, edition-wide Java specification that can safely be substituted for those values.
For Java Edition, state the exact game version and verify the version-specific spawning rules before publishing or building a farm around a number. Do not copy the Bedrock examples into a Java guide without qualification. The same warning applies when a tutorial omits its edition: a number without an edition and version is incomplete information.
An archived Minecraft Wiki overview describes natural spawning as dependent on light, habitat and surroundings, and notes that despawn behavior differs between Java and Bedrock. That broad description is useful context, but it is not a replacement for a current version’s entity definition.

How to spawn-proof a Minecraft base in Bedrock
The reliable method is to protect the actual blocks where an entity could stand, then verify the non-light conditions if anything remains.
- Identify the edition and version. Write down that you are testing Bedrock and record the game version. If the world is Java, stop before applying the Bedrock 0–7 figure.
- Map every possible spawning surface. Include roofs, ledges, balconies, stairs, platforms, cave floors, paths and the ground immediately around the base. Mobs use eligible surfaces, not just the room you consider to be the base.
- Measure or reason about the light on each surface. The target is the block where the entity would stand. A bright wall or ceiling does not prove that a recessed floor square is bright enough.
- Raise the brightness above the relevant maximum. For the documented hostile example, bring each target block to level 8 or higher. Place sources so their coverage overlaps at corners and around obstacles rather than leaving isolated dark squares.
- Recheck after construction changes. Adding a roof, wall, trapdoor, decoration or terrain bump can create a newly protected or newly exposed surface. Re-evaluate the blocks, not just the original lamp positions.
- Test from the normal player position. Stand where you usually work, sleep, defend the base or wait for a farm. Give the world enough time for its spawning attempts and account for loaded areas elsewhere.
- Investigate survivors using the other filters. If mobs still appear on a surface that passes the brightness target, inspect biome, difficulty, player distance, density limits, delays, herd settings and entity-specific rules.
How to spawn-proof a cave or mob-farm perimeter
Start with the intended spawn area
Decide whether the platform is meant to attract a rule-driven entity or whether you are trying to eliminate natural spawns. For a hostile rule with a maximum of 7, leaving a platform at 0–7 can be intentional; lighting it to 8 or higher defeats that brightness condition. For a spawn-proof perimeter, do the reverse: raise every eligible surface above the maximum used by the hostile rule you are trying to block.

Cover surrounding volumes, not only the platform
A farm can appear broken because nearby caves consume the available density allowance. Light or otherwise secure adjacent caves, ravines, roofs and terrain that remain loaded with the farm. Check spaces above and below the platform, since a dark shelf outside your view can still qualify.
Separate lighting diagnosis from farm timing
A delay or herd setting can make a valid farm look inactive during a brief test. Keep your player at the intended distance, wait through more than one spawning attempt and observe whether entities appear in the correct area. If they appear elsewhere, inspect the perimeter before changing the farm’s lamps.
Check the rule’s weather behavior
If a farm behaves differently during rain or thunder, determine whether its brightness filter enables weather adjustment. The documented hostile example does not; the passive day example does. Do not add a weather workaround to a rule that does not evaluate weather.

Natural spawning, rule-driven spawning and spawners
Lighting guidance is most directly useful when the entity is created by a brightness-filtered spawning rule. A natural spawn attempt still has to pass biome, difficulty, distance, density, timing and entity filters. A rule-driven system may add its own conditions.
A spawner is a separate mechanism from ordinary natural spawning. Do not assume that lighting a room above the natural hostile example’s maximum automatically disables a spawner. Diagnose the mechanism first, then consult the specific entity and spawner behavior for the edition and version you are using.
Common symptoms and the right check
| Symptom | First check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Mobs appear on a supposedly protected floor | Recheck the light on the exact standing block and inspect nearby recessed squares. | The brightness test is evaluated at the spawning surface; a nearby lamp may not raise every block above 7. |
| A farm produces nothing after lighting changes | Confirm that you did not raise the platform above the maximum of its intended brightness rule. | For the documented hostile example, level 8 or higher intentionally blocks the 0–7 condition. |
| Spawns occur only during storms or stop during storms | Inspect the rule’s adjust_for_weather setting. |
Weather is relevant only when the entity definition enables adjustment. |
| One area is busy while another identical-looking area is empty | Compare player distance, loaded spaces and density limits. | Spawn attempts are affected by distance and by entities consuming available density. |
| Results change after moving the player | Repeat the test from the intended operating position. | Player distance is an independent spawn condition. |
| Mobs appear in a place that is bright enough for hostile examples | Identify the entity and its actual filter. | The 0–7 range is an official hostile example, not a universal filter for every entity or spawning mechanism. |
Choosing and placing light sources
For spawn-proofing, the source’s identity is less important than the resulting light at the target block. Torches, lanterns, glowstone, sea lanterns and other sources can all be useful when they raise the measured brightness high enough. Choose placement that covers floors, corners and uneven terrain while preserving the pathing or visual design you want.
Do not count fixtures by eye. A decorative lantern several blocks away may leave a dark patch behind a pillar; a concealed source may protect the same patch without changing the appearance of the room. Recheck after changing walls, ceilings or elevations, because geometry changes where the light reaches.
A compact spawn-proofing checklist
- Edition and game version recorded.
- Entity or spawning mechanism identified.
- Exact standing blocks mapped, including roofs, ledges and caves.
- Brightness checked on the surface rather than beside the lamp.
- For the documented Bedrock hostile rule, every protected block raised above level 7.
- Weather adjustment checked before diagnosing rain or thunder effects.
- Biome and habitat requirements checked.
- Difficulty confirmed.
- Player distance tested from the intended operating position.
- Nearby loaded spaces checked for density or mob-cap pressure.
- Enough time allowed for delays and herd behavior.
- Natural spawning distinguished from a spawner or another rule-driven mechanism.
Bottom line
For the official Bedrock hostile example, light levels 0–7 pass the brightness test and level 8 or higher blocks it. Use that number to protect a base or to tune a farm only after confirming the entity, edition and version. Light is one filter among several, and Java Edition should not be assigned the Bedrock threshold without a version-specific verification.
