To tame a llama in Minecraft, repeatedly mount it with an empty hand until heart particles appear; feeding it wheat can make the process faster. Once tamed, equip a chest for between 3 and 15 storage slots, add a carpet for a colored pattern, and attach a lead to make nearby llamas follow in a caravan.

Llamas are useful overland pack animals, but they are not controlled like horses. Leads and caravan behavior provide the practical transport system. This guide covers where llamas spawn, how taming works, how strength affects storage, how to move groups safely, and how to secure the two llamas that arrive with a wandering trader.

Where llamas spawn
Wild llamas appear in groups of four to six. Their natural colors are brown, cream, white, and gray, so color alone does not tell you whether a llama is stronger, tamed, or connected to a wandering trader.
Java Edition biomes
In Java Edition, search these biome types:
- Savanna plateau
- Windswept hills
- Windswept gravelly hills
- Windswept forest
Bedrock Edition additions
Bedrock Edition also includes regular savanna and windswept savanna in the llama spawn list. If you are playing Bedrock and find a broad, ordinary savanna rather than a plateau, it is still worth searching the area.

Finding a useful individual
Walk the whole group before choosing an animal. Llamas have a hidden strength value that determines how much a chest can hold, and that value is not displayed in the normal interface. Since every member of a group can have a different capacity, check candidates before assigning one to a long supply route. A visually attractive color is a cosmetic choice; it is not a capacity indicator.
How to tame a llama
Taming is a patience task rather than a combat or breeding task. You do not need a saddle, and the first mount normally fails.

- Approach the llama without holding an item that would trigger another interaction.
- Use the interact control with an empty hand to mount it.
- Expect the llama to throw you off at first. This is the normal rejection animation, not a sign that the animal cannot be tamed.
- Mount it again and repeat the process. Continue until heart particles appear and the llama accepts you.
- If you want to shorten the process, feed the llama wheat between attempts. Minecraft describes wheat as helping the taming process, and Bedrock’s tamemount behavior allows feed items to increase an entity’s temper, which speeds taming.
- After the hearts appear, dismount and interact again to confirm that the llama now responds as a tamed animal.
What successful taming changes
A tamed llama can receive a chest and a carpet, and it can serve as the leader or a follower in a player-managed caravan. Taming does not give you horse-style steering. Riding is the method used to build acceptance; the reliable way to choose a route afterward is a lead, a fence, or a carefully prepared path.
If the llama keeps rejecting you
- Make sure each attempt uses an empty hand. Holding wheat is useful for feeding, but it is not the same interaction as mounting.
- Stay close enough for the interaction to register and avoid trying through blocks, trapdoors, or fence posts.
- Keep repeating the mount action rather than waiting for a single attempt to succeed.
- Use wheat deliberately if the process feels slow; feeding changes the taming temper, while simply standing nearby does not.
Putting a chest on a tamed llama
A chest turns the llama into a mobile pack animal. The available storage is determined by the llama’s hidden strength and ranges from 3 to 15 slots. The game does not show the strength number directly, so capacity is the practical way to compare animals.
Chest procedure
- Tame the llama first. An untamed animal will not function as your pack animal.
- Place a normal chest in your hand.
- Interact with the tamed llama while holding the chest. The chest is attached to the animal and its inventory becomes available through the llama’s storage screen.
- Open the llama’s inventory and count the usable slots before loading a major expedition.
- Put lighter or lower-priority supplies on a small-capacity llama and reserve the largest-capacity animals for bulk materials, food, or replacement equipment.
Capacity range and planning

Do not assume every llama in a group can carry the same amount. If you are moving a base, first tame several animals, equip chests, and assign the highest-capacity llamas to the most important cargo. This avoids discovering halfway through a journey that a key bundle has no room.
Loading a caravan
Storage remains individual. A chest on the lead llama does not create one shared warehouse for the entire train, and a follower’s inventory is not automatically accessible from the leader. Open each animal’s inventory when distributing supplies, and keep a written or visual cargo plan if the caravan is carrying materials for a large build.

Adding a carpet
A carpet gives a tamed llama a colored, patterned rug. It is cosmetic, but the color is useful for organizing several animals or multiple caravans.
Carpet procedure
- Tame the llama and keep it within interaction range.
- Hold the carpet color you want.
- Interact with the llama to apply the carpet.
- Use different colors to identify roles such as building supplies, food, or valuables.
The carpet changes the visible pattern rather than the llama’s strength, storage, speed, or caravan limit. Choose a color for recognition, not performance. A matching set can identify one route, while contrasting colors can make it easier to find a specific pack animal after unloading a train.
How llama caravans work
Leashing one llama causes nearby llamas to line up behind it. Minecraft’s official explanation describes up to nine nearby followers. That means a complete player-made train can contain one leashed leader plus nine followers, or 10 llamas in total when the group is full.
Creating the train
- Bring the llamas into the same open area. Nearby animals are the ones most likely to join, so begin with the group you actually want to move.
- Equip a lead and attach it to one llama. This animal becomes the front of the train.
- Watch the surrounding llamas. They form a line behind the leashed animal as they join the caravan.
- Walk slowly in the direction of travel. The followers copy the leader’s movement rather than receiving individual steering commands.
- Check the rear of the train after turns, climbs, and narrow passages. If an animal catches on terrain, stop and clear the obstruction before continuing.
The Microsoft Bedrock behavior example uses a caravan entity count of 10, consistent with one leader and nine followers. Treat that as a total train size, not nine leaders. Adding another lead to a separate llama creates a separate caravan rather than increasing the first train beyond its follower limit.

A llama caravan is an overland logistics tool, so route preparation matters more than speed. Before loading valuable supplies, walk the planned path without the animals and identify:
- Cliffs, ravines, and sudden drops that can strand the lead or split the line.
- Water crossings where the leader can take a route the followers cannot match.
- Narrow doorways, stairwells, and bridges that are too tight for a moving train.
- Dense vegetation, fences, and corners that can snag the rear animals.
- Chunk boundaries and areas likely to unload while you travel.
Keep the route clear, widen entrances, and use temporary bridges or ramps where necessary. If you must stop, stop in an open, enclosed staging area rather than beside a cliff or in a river. The official description specifically presents caravans as a way to move supplies, trade with villagers, or relocate an entire base; those jobs are safest when the path is treated like a transport route instead of improvised exploration.

Keeping a caravan together
Use a steady walking pace and avoid sprinting around corners. The front llama can move through a gap that the rear animals cannot, so pause after every major change in elevation or direction. When a follower disappears from view, turn back immediately rather than continuing and hoping it catches up. Unloaded chunks can interrupt the visible line, so move in stages when traveling near the edge of your loaded area.
Separating animals intentionally
To manage several caravans, place each group in its own open pen before attaching leads. Apply a different carpet color to each role or destination, then release one train at a time. This prevents an accidental nearby llama from joining the wrong line and makes it easier to identify which animals still carry a particular shipment.
Wandering traders and their llamas
A wandering trader normally appears with two leashed trader llamas. These animals are a special encounter rather than a random replacement for every wild llama you find.
The trader’s time limit
The cited reference documentation gives the wandering trader a despawn timer of 48,000 loaded ticks. That equals 40 minutes, or two in-game days, while the relevant area remains loaded. Unloading and other game conditions can affect how the timer behaves, so do not treat the number as a guaranteed wall-clock appointment if you leave the area.
Securing the pair
- Prepare a fenced or otherwise secure enclosure before approaching the trader if you expect to keep the llamas.
- Lead the trader llamas into the enclosure one at a time, keeping an eye on terrain and the original tether.
- Close the entrance and remove hazards such as water channels, open drops, or gaps beneath fences.
- Deal with the trader encounter promptly. Waiting until the end of the loaded timer risks losing the opportunity to organize the animals safely.
- Once the pair is secure, decide whether to keep them together as a display, tame them for pack use, or assign them to a larger player-made caravan.
The trader’s temporary nature is the important distinction: the encounter has a time limit, while a protected animal pen gives you time to plan. Secure the animals first and sort their equipment afterward.

There is no single best llama for every route. Choose by capacity, location, and how you intend to organize the animals.

Short scouting trip
For a short trip, a small-capacity llama can carry a few emergency items. Use a carpet color that distinguishes it from animals assigned to long-haul work, and avoid loading irreplaceable materials until you have confirmed the route.
Long-distance supply run
Test several tamed llamas and assign the largest usable inventories to the shipment. Keep the train compact enough to pass through the prepared route, and put the most important cargo on animals you can identify quickly.
Base relocation
A full caravan is useful when a move involves many separate stacks of supplies. Stage the destination first, clear the path, and use carpet colors to divide construction materials from food or personal equipment. Move in sections if the route crosses areas that may unload.
Trading route
Caravans can move goods overland to villagers, but the practical limit is route safety rather than the ability to attach another lead. Build wide approaches to trading areas and keep a fenced unloading yard at the destination so the train does not scatter around buildings.

Troubleshooting common problems
“I cannot find llamas in my world.”
Confirm the edition first, then search the matching biome list rather than checking every grassland. Groups normally contain four to six animals, so a successful search may reveal several candidates at once. If you find only one animal, scan the surrounding terrain before deciding it is a solitary spawn.
“The llama throws me every time.”
Rejection is expected during early attempts. Continue mounting with an empty hand and use wheat to help the temper increase. Hearts, not a successful single ride, are the visible confirmation that taming is complete.

Check the inventory rather than judging the animal by appearance. Chest capacity is tied to hidden strength, so another llama from the same group may be a better pack animal. Reassign cargo before starting a long trip.

That is normal. A carpet is a colored patterned decoration and an identification aid. It does not alter strength, storage, taming, or the number of caravan followers.
“The back of the caravan is missing.”
Stop the leader, turn around, and inspect cliffs, water, corners, vegetation, and narrow entrances. Check whether the route moved into an area that unloaded. Resume only after the line is visible and the obstruction is removed.
“The wandering trader disappeared before I finished.”
The trader is temporary, and the reference timer is measured in loaded ticks. Secure the llamas as soon as the encounter begins instead of postponing the enclosure work. If you left the area, remember that unloading can affect timer behavior, but it should not be used as a dependable preservation method.
A practical llama workflow
For a reliable long-term setup, use this order:
- Locate a group in an edition-appropriate biome.
- Compare candidates visually, then tame the animals you want to test.
- Feed wheat during taming if you want the process to move faster.
- Equip chests and inspect each inventory to identify high-capacity pack animals.
- Apply carpet colors that match your cargo or destination system.
- Prepare and walk the route without the caravan.
- Attach a lead to the chosen leader and allow nearby llamas to form the train.
- Move at a controlled pace, checking the rear after terrain changes and chunk transitions.
- Unload in a protected pen or staging area before removing supplies.
Used this way, llamas fill a specific niche: they are customizable pack animals that move as a linked overland train. Their value comes from combining hidden strength-based storage, visible carpet labels, and lead-driven group movement—not from horse-style riding control.
