If Minecraft will not install from the Microsoft Store, the fastest supported sequence is to verify the Microsoft account and entitlement, update and restart Windows, reset the Store with wsreset.exe, then repair or reinstall Minecraft Launcher. A missing listing, disabled Install button, stalled download, missing Play button, or error 0X80131500 can require a different branch of that process.
What a Minecraft Microsoft Store problem usually means
Minecraft for Windows depends on several Microsoft services working together: Microsoft Store, Xbox services, Minecraft Launcher, Windows licensing, and your network settings. A failure in any one of them can look like an installation problem. For example, the Store may be functioning while the Launcher package is damaged, or the Launcher may be healthy while the signed-in account does not own Minecraft.

The first question is therefore not “Which button should I click?” but “Which layer is failing?” Use this order:
- Identity and entitlement: the Store, Xbox app, and Launcher should use the same Microsoft account that owns Minecraft or has the applicable PC Game Pass entitlement.
- Store state: a stale Store cache or pending update can block downloads.
- Launcher package: a damaged installation can stop or stall even when the Store works.
- Availability and system rules: region, family controls, compatibility, authorization, or a pending restart can hide the app or disable Install.
- Network security: incorrect TLS settings are a known path for error

1. Confirm the account that owns Minecraft
Use one account in every app
Sign out of Microsoft Store, the Xbox app for Windows, and Minecraft Launcher. Sign back in to each with the Microsoft account that purchased Minecraft or carries the relevant PC Game Pass entitlement. Minecraft Launcher relies on Microsoft and Xbox services, so using one account in the Store and another in the Launcher can leave the game visible but unplayable.

- Open Microsoft Store, select your profile icon, and sign out.
- Open the Xbox app, sign out from its profile menu.
- Open Minecraft Launcher and sign out there as well.
- Close all three applications.
- Reopen Microsoft Store first and sign in to the licensed account.
- Sign in to the Xbox app and Launcher with that same account.
When the Play button is missing
If you own Minecraft but the Launcher shows no Play button, the active Microsoft account probably does not own the game. Switch to the account used for the purchase, or to the account with the applicable PC Game Pass entitlement. Do not buy the game again until you have checked every account you use on the PC.
2. Update the Store, Windows, and restart
A Store update or Windows update can be waiting in the background while the old components continue running. Microsoft recommends closing and reopening the Store, checking Windows Update, updating Store applications, and restarting after recently installed Windows updates.
- Close Microsoft Store completely, reopen it, and try the Minecraft page again.
- In Windows 11, open Microsoft Store and choose Library > Get updates. On Windows 10, the equivalent command is Downloads and updates.
- Open Settings > Windows Update and install available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if the update screen does not explicitly demand it.
- After the restart, open the Store and retry the installation before changing other settings.
A restart is especially important when Windows was updated but the PC has remained on for several days. The Store can treat the device as not ready until the update cycle completes.

3. Reset Microsoft Store with wsreset.exe
The supported first repair for a stalled or failed Store installation is a Store reset. This clears the Store cache without requiring you to delete personal files.
- Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
- Enter
wsreset.exeand select OK. - Wait while a blank command window appears. Microsoft says it normally remains open for about ten seconds.
- Microsoft Store should open automatically when the reset finishes.
- Search for Minecraft again and start the installation.
Do not close the blank window immediately; doing so interrupts the reset. If the Store does not open after the command completes, restart Windows and run the command once more.
4. Repair or reset Minecraft Launcher
If the Store opens normally but the Launcher download stops, the Launcher package may be damaged. Windows provides repair and reset controls for installed apps.

- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Minecraft Launcher, select its three-dot menu, and choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair and wait for Windows to finish.
- Open the Launcher and test the installation.
- If Repair does not help, return to the same page and select Reset. Reset can remove the app’s local data, so you may need to sign in again.
- Try the Launcher again after the reset.
Reinstall as the escalation step
If both Repair and Reset fail, uninstall Minecraft Launcher from Settings > Apps > Installed apps, restart Windows, and install the Launcher again through an official route. Reinstalling is more disruptive than a Store reset or app repair, which is why it belongs later in the sequence.
5. Install through another official route
When Microsoft Store itself is the failing component, Minecraft provides two supported alternatives: install the Launcher from the Xbox app for Windows, or use the official Minecraft download page and its Windows Download Launcher option.
Xbox app for Windows
- Open the Xbox app and sign in with the account that owns Minecraft or has the applicable PC Game Pass entitlement.
- Search for Minecraft and choose the Launcher installation option.
- Allow the Xbox app to complete the download, then open Launcher and sign in with the same account.
Official Minecraft download page
Use the Windows download choice on Minecraft’s official site when both the Store listing and Xbox route are unavailable. The downloaded Launcher still uses Microsoft and Xbox account authorization, so changing download sources does not remove the need for the correct licensed account.

6. If Minecraft is missing or Install is disabled
Not seeing Minecraft, or seeing it without an active Install button, does not necessarily mean the game has been removed from your account. Microsoft identifies several availability blockers.
| Possible blocker | What to check | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Country or region | The app may not be available in the current Windows region. | Check Settings > Time & language > Language & region and confirm that the device region is correct for your location. |
| Family settings | Family controls can hide an app or prevent installation. | Review Microsoft family settings with the organizer account and confirm that the child account is allowed to access the title. |
| App removed or listing changed | A Store listing can be unavailable temporarily or differ between devices. | Try the Xbox app or the official Minecraft download page instead of repeatedly refreshing one Store result. |
| Device incompatibility | The Store may show an app on one PC but not another. | Check Windows updates, hardware compatibility, and whether the device meets the Launcher’s current requirements. |
| Pending Windows restart | Windows was updated but has not completed its restart cycle. | Restart, then reopen the Store and select Library > Get updates. |
| PC authorization | The PC is not signed in to the Microsoft account that owns the license. | Sign out and back in to the licensed account in Store, Xbox, and Launcher. |
Microsoft also notes that an app can be available on one PC but not another PC or an Xbox. That difference can reflect device compatibility, account authorization, region, or family restrictions rather than a universal Minecraft outage.

- On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Store Apps and select Run.
- Apply any recommended fix, restart Windows if prompted, and retry Minecraft.
- On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, select Windows Store Apps, and run it.
Check TLS in Internet Options
- Open Control Panel, search for Internet Options, and open it.
- Select the Advanced tab and scroll to the security protocol list.
- Disable SSL 3.0, TLS 1.0, and TLS 1.1.
- Enable TLS 1.2. Enable TLS 1.3 when that option is available on your Windows installation.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Restart Windows and try the Store installation again.
Change only the protocols listed above. Do not disable newer security protocols to make an old setting appear to work.
Choosing the next repair route
| Symptom | Best next step | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Missing Play button | Correct the Microsoft account in Store, Xbox, and Launcher. | Play authorization follows the account that owns Minecraft or the applicable entitlement. |
| Download stalls in Store | Run wsreset.exe, then repair Launcher. |
These are low-impact fixes for a stale Store cache or damaged Launcher package. |
| Store listing or Install button missing | Check region, family controls, compatibility, restart status, and authorization; then try Xbox. | Availability rules can differ by device and account. |
Store error 0X80131500 |
Run the Store Apps troubleshooter and correct TLS settings. | This error has a specific Windows and network-security path. |
| Repair and reset fail | Uninstall and reinstall Launcher, or use the Xbox app or official Minecraft download page. | Reinstallation and alternate installers bypass a damaged local package or Store route. |
When the problem is not solved
Repeat the account check after every reinstall; a newly installed Launcher can default to a different Microsoft account. Also verify that the Xbox app and Store are fully updated, that Windows has been restarted after updates, and that the error is reproduced after each single change. Changing several settings at once makes it difficult to identify whether the cause was authorization, Store cache, Launcher data, availability, or TLS.
If the official Store, Xbox, and download-page routes all fail after these checks, record the exact error code, the Windows edition, whether Minecraft appears in Store search, and which account owns the license before contacting Microsoft or Minecraft support. Those details distinguish an account problem from a device or service problem.
