Short answer: Minecraft Java Edition’s current official minimum target is 1080p at 30 FPS on the Fast graphics preset, with a 64-bit operating system, a four-core processor, Vulkan 1.3 graphics, at least 2 GB of VRAM, and 8 GB of system RAM with a discrete GPU or 12 GB with integrated graphics. Mojang’s recommended target is 1080p at 60 FPS on Fancy, with 16 GB of RAM and a stronger modern processor and graphics card with about 6 GB of VRAM.
Bedrock Edition is available on a much wider range of devices, including Windows PCs, consoles, phones, tablets, and Chromebook-class devices. Its official PC page lists 4 GB minimum and 8 GB recommended storage; those figures are not RAM requirements. The right answer also depends on the edition: Java and Bedrock normally use separate multiplayer ecosystems.

These figures answer different questions. A computer can sometimes launch Minecraft below an official target, yet still provide poor frame rates, long loading times, visual problems, or uncertain compatibility with future updates. Mojang describes the new Java figures as performance targets for a stable modern experience—not a universal claim that every below-spec computer will fail to start the game.

The important Java Edition requirements update
Mojang’s July 21, 2026 Java Edition update raises both the minimum and recommended targets. The change is intended to establish a clearer baseline as Minecraft worlds, features, and graphics technology continue to evolve. It does not mean that Minecraft has suddenly become equivalent to a demanding new AAA game, but it does make older graphics hardware a more significant compatibility concern.

The transition away from OpenGL toward Vulkan is especially relevant. Older graphics cards, some older integrated graphics solutions, and certain Intel-based Macs may not meet the new baseline or may have an uncertain path to future compatibility. A computer that ran an older version of Java Edition is therefore not automatically guaranteed to meet the current target.
Java Edition minimum requirements explained
Current official minimum target
- Performance target: 1080p resolution at 30 FPS.
- Graphics preset: Fast.
- Operating system: 64-bit.
- Processor: Four cores.
- Graphics API: Vulkan 1.3 capability.
- Graphics memory: At least 2 GB of VRAM.
- System memory: 8 GB with a discrete graphics card, or 12 GB with integrated graphics.
The RAM distinction matters. A system with integrated graphics uses part of its ordinary system memory for graphics, so Mojang’s minimum is higher in that configuration. Do not read the requirement as “every Java computer needs exactly 8 GB” or “every Java computer needs exactly 12 GB.” It depends on whether the machine has a separate discrete GPU.
VRAM and system RAM are also different. VRAM is memory on or allocated to the graphics processor. System RAM is the memory used by Windows, macOS, Linux, Minecraft, and other running applications. A computer can have 16 GB of system RAM and still fail the graphics requirement if its GPU does not provide the necessary Vulkan support or VRAM.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat the minimum does not guarantee
The minimum target is aimed at 1080p/30 FPS with Fast settings. It should not be treated as a promise of smooth performance in every situation. Expect less headroom for:
- Large modpacks or modded clients.
- Shader packs and demanding visual effects.
- High-resolution texture packs.
- Very long render or simulation distances.
- Large multiplayer worlds with many entities and redstone systems.
- Recording, streaming, or running several demanding programs at the same time.
Java’s official announcement does not provide a complete model-by-model list of processors and graphics cards. It is safer to compare a computer against the stated core count, Vulkan version, VRAM, and RAM than to assume that an unlisted CPU or GPU is officially equivalent to a particular model.
Java Edition recommended requirements
Mojang’s recommended target is:
- 1080p at 60 FPS.
- Fancy graphics preset.
- 16 GB of system RAM.
- A stronger modern processor.
- A more capable graphics card with approximately 6 GB of VRAM.
- Vulkan 1.3 support.
This is a sensible baseline for a new or replacement PC, not a guarantee for every shader, modpack, resolution, or recording setup. If you want 1440p or 4K, very long view distances, heavy mods, high-end shaders, or simultaneous streaming, buy more headroom than the published 1080p/60 target. The official guidance does not promise a specific frame rate for those scenarios.
Java operating-system and Mac support
Java Edition is the PC-focused edition and is officially associated with Windows, macOS, and Linux. Java multiplayer cross-play is limited to Java players on those desktop operating systems.
Recommended Free Tools
Minecraft Help states that, as of March 2025, players need at least Windows 10 or macOS 10.15 to access online play and continue receiving Minecraft updates through the Launcher. This is an operating-system support condition, not a replacement for the CPU, GPU, RAM, and VRAM requirements.
Mac buyers need to check the specific Mac rather than assuming that all Macs perform alike. Apple silicon and Intel Macs can differ substantially in graphics capability, operating-system support, drivers, and compatibility with the move toward Vulkan-based rendering. Mojang specifically warns that older Intel-based Macs may fall below the new Java baseline.
Bedrock Edition requirements and supported devices
Bedrock Edition is designed for a broader device range:
- Windows PCs.
- Xbox consoles.
- PlayStation consoles.
- Nintendo Switch systems.
- Supported Android and iOS mobile devices.
- Chromebook-class devices where the supported version is available.
On comparable hardware, the official product information describes Bedrock as generally smoother and less resource-intensive than Java. It also supports controller and touch input and is the edition used for cross-platform multiplayer among supported Bedrock devices.

| Edition | Minimum storage listed for PC | Recommended storage listed for PC |
|---|---|---|
| Bedrock | 4 GB | 8 GB |
| Java | 2 GB | 4 GB |
These are storage figures, not RAM figures. They describe space for the game installation, but they do not establish how much space every player will need over time. Worlds, cached data, add-ons, Marketplace content, screenshots, recordings, launcher updates, and operating-system updates can all use additional space. Leave free capacity beyond the published baseline rather than treating the table as a universal total.
Bedrock’s broader availability does not mean that every inexpensive Windows laptop will perform identically. Processor speed, graphics hardware, memory, drivers, operating-system version, render distance, world size, add-ons, and background applications still affect the result. The official Bedrock product page provides platform and storage guidance rather than one complete PC performance table comparable to Java’s current target table.
Java versus Bedrock: which edition should you use?
The most important buying decision is often not the computer—it is the edition your friends use.
| Choose Java when… | Choose Bedrock when… |
|---|---|
| You mainly play with people on Windows, macOS, or Linux using Java. | You need to play with friends on Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, or mobile. |
| PC mods, Java community servers, or Java-specific versions are important. | Controller or touch support is important. |
| You want the PC edition associated with extensive community customization and user-created content. | You want the generally more forgiving edition on supported lower-powered hardware. |
Java and Bedrock are not automatically cross-compatible simply because both are called Minecraft. Java players generally play with Java players, while Bedrock players use Bedrock multiplayer across supported Windows, console, and mobile platforms. A Java player cannot normally join a standard Bedrock world or server without a special third-party setup, and such setups are not the normal compatibility path.

For Windows PC buyers, the current PC package includes both Java and Bedrock. That means the practical choice is often which edition to launch, rather than which edition to purchase separately. If your household plays across consoles and phones, start with Bedrock. If everyone plays on PC and mods or Java servers matter, start with Java.
What PC should you buy for Minecraft?
Entry-level Java computer
For the current official minimum, look for a 64-bit Windows, macOS, or Linux computer with a four-core processor, Vulkan 1.3-capable graphics, at least 2 GB of VRAM, and the appropriate RAM allowance. A discrete-GPU system should have at least 8 GB of RAM; an integrated-graphics system should be judged against the 12 GB minimum more conservatively.
This level is intended for 1080p/30 FPS on Fast. It is not the right target if you already know you want large modpacks, shaders, very high render distance, streaming, or demanding texture packs.
Comfortable Java computer
For a new Windows desktop, aim at least at the recommended class: 16 GB of RAM, a modern multi-core processor, and a Vulkan 1.3-capable graphics card with around 6 GB of VRAM. This gives a better starting point for 1080p/60 FPS on Fancy, but it is still not an official promise for every heavily modified setup.
Readers replacing an old computer can compare current listings in the gaming PC for Minecraft category. Treat that phrase as a shopping starting point, not a technical certification: verify the exact processor, GPU model, Vulkan support, dedicated VRAM, RAM, Windows version, storage type, and available capacity in the listing before buying. Retail availability and specifications can change.
Gaming laptop guidance
A laptop needs the same checks as a desktop, with additional attention to cooling, upgradeability, and whether its graphics hardware is discrete or integrated. A gaming laptop for Minecraft with 16 GB of RAM, an SSD, and a discrete GPU may be a practical portable Java option, but an individual model should never be assumed to deliver a particular FPS without testing under a defined configuration. Confirm the exact GPU and its Vulkan support, because “gaming laptop” is a marketing category rather than a guarantee of Minecraft performance.
Bedrock PC guidance
Bedrock is often the easier choice for a general-purpose Windows computer, especially when console or mobile cross-play matters. Still check the operating-system version, graphics drivers, system memory, storage, and free space. The official 4 GB minimum and 8 GB recommended figures are storage guidance, not a complete performance specification and not a recommendation to buy a computer with only 4 GB of RAM.
How to check whether a Windows PC meets the requirements
- Identify the edition. Open the Minecraft Launcher and check whether you are starting Java Edition or Bedrock for Windows. The two editions have different requirements and multiplayer networks.
- Check Windows and basic hardware. Open Settings > System > About. Review the Windows edition and version, processor, installed RAM, and whether the system is 64-bit.
- Check the GPU and VRAM. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, select Performance, and choose the GPU. Look for the GPU name and dedicated GPU memory. Integrated graphics may show shared system memory instead of a separate VRAM pool.
- Verify Vulkan support. Use the graphics-card or computer manufacturer’s current specifications and driver information to confirm Vulkan 1.3 support. A GPU name alone is not enough, because driver support also matters. DirectX Diagnostic Tool can help identify the graphics device and driver, but it should not be treated as a standalone Vulkan 1.3 certification.
- Check storage. Open Settings > System > Storage. Confirm that the installation drive has more free space than the published base requirement, especially if you keep multiple worlds, add-ons, recordings, or shader and texture files.
- Check the actual configuration. A desktop may have more RAM or a different GPU than the model name suggests. For a used PC or laptop, verify the installed parts directly rather than relying only on the seller’s title.
On a Mac, select Apple menu > About This Mac, or use System Settings > General > About on newer versions of macOS. Record the chip or processor, memory, macOS version, and graphics information, then compare the specific Mac against the current Java operating-system and Vulkan-related guidance.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →What to upgrade first when Minecraft runs poorly
If Minecraft launches but stutters, loads slowly, or produces an unstable frame rate, work through these checks in order. The goal is to identify whether the problem is edition compatibility, hardware capacity, settings, software, or multiplayer networking.
- Confirm Java or Bedrock. Do not troubleshoot a Bedrock installation against Java’s Vulkan and VRAM targets, or assume that Java-specific mods and settings apply to Bedrock.
- Confirm operating-system support. Install pending system updates where appropriate and make sure the computer meets the relevant Windows or macOS support condition.
- Update graphics drivers. Get drivers from the computer manufacturer or GPU manufacturer. A driver update may resolve compatibility problems, but it cannot turn unsupported hardware into a modern graphics card.
- Check RAM availability. Close browsers with many tabs, video editors, launchers, and other memory-heavy applications. If the system is constantly near its memory limit, additional RAM can help general responsiveness, although it cannot fix a weak GPU.
- Lower render distance and simulation distance. These settings can place substantial demands on the processor and graphics hardware. Reduce them temporarily to determine whether the frame rate stabilizes.
- Lower graphics complexity. Use Fast graphics, disable or reduce shaders, and test without high-resolution texture packs or demanding add-ons.
- Test Java without modifications. Launch an unmodified Java profile with shaders and mods disabled. If the base game performs normally, add modifications back one at a time to find the expensive or incompatible component.
- Check storage health and free space. Keep sufficient free space on the installation drive and make sure the drive is not reporting errors. An SSD can improve loading and general system responsiveness, but storage alone does not replace the required CPU or GPU.
- Separate FPS problems from network problems. Low frame rate is a local performance issue. Delayed block breaking, rubber-banding, or players teleporting can instead indicate latency, server load, or connection problems.
- For multiplayer, match edition and version. Everyone should use the same edition and a compatible game version. Bedrock players need Bedrock to join Bedrock servers, Realms, or locally hosted Bedrock multiplayer.
Optional hardware upgrades
For an existing desktop, a 16GB RAM upgrade for Minecraft can be sensible when the machine has insufficient memory for the game plus normal background applications. An NVMe SSD can improve loading and general desktop responsiveness, while a better GPU is the more relevant upgrade when the system lacks Vulkan 1.3 support, dedicated VRAM, or graphics performance. A keyboard, mouse, headset, or monitor improves comfort but is not required to run Minecraft.
Do not buy a RAM kit or SSD without checking motherboard compatibility, available slots, drive interfaces, and the existing configuration. Peripherals are optional additions to a setup, not hidden Minecraft requirements.
Optional Windows maintenance software
If the PC remains generally sluggish after you have checked Minecraft’s edition, operating-system support, drivers, available RAM, storage, and in-game settings, an optional Windows PC maintenance tool such as Outbyte may be relevant for general PC housekeeping. It is not required for Minecraft, is not Mojang software, and should not be presented as a way to add VRAM, fix Vulkan incompatibility, make below-minimum hardware meet the official target, or guarantee higher FPS. Use it only as an optional troubleshooting step and review what it changes before applying any automated recommendation.
For optional general Windows housekeeping after these checks, Outbyte PC Repair is a possible tool, but it is not required for Minecraft and cannot add VRAM or fix Vulkan incompatibility.
Do not confuse the Bedrock client with Bedrock Dedicated Server
Minecraft’s Bedrock Dedicated Server requirements describe software that hosts a world; they are not the requirements for playing the ordinary Bedrock client.
The official server page lists, among other details, an Intel Core i3-3210, AMD A8-7600 APU or equivalent, 4 GB RAM, approximately 180 MB to 1 GB of available storage, broadband internet, and either Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or later on Linux or Windows 10 version 10.0.15063 or later / Windows Server 2016 or later on Windows. It separately notes that small servers may need at least 1 GB RAM and that larger worlds or more players need additional resources.
Those figures belong to the server context. They should not be copied into a “Can my PC play Bedrock?” table. A computer that can host a small dedicated server is not automatically guaranteed to provide a particular client frame rate, and a client requirement does not describe the bandwidth or server capacity needed to host a busy world.

Multiplayer and edition compatibility
Matching editions and compatible versions matter before anyone troubleshoots connection problems:
- Java multiplayer: Java players on supported Windows, macOS, and Linux systems use the Java ecosystem.
- Bedrock multiplayer: Bedrock players can play across supported Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and mobile platforms.
- Java and Bedrock together: Native cross-play is not the normal arrangement. A standard Java world is not automatically joinable by a Bedrock player.
- Performance: Computers used to play or host multiplayer should meet or exceed the applicable requirements. A slow host, overloaded world, or poor connection can cause problems even when the client hardware is adequate.
Before buying the game for a child or household, ask which devices the other players use. Edition matching can be more important than a small difference in graphics performance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. For Minecraft creators: streaming is separate from game performance
A computer that runs Minecraft well is not automatically a suitable 24-hour broadcasting machine. Recording, encoding, uploading, and playing simultaneously can require additional CPU, GPU, memory, storage, and network capacity.
Creators with their own or properly licensed prerecorded tutorials, builds, educational videos, ambience, or replay content may consider 24/7 Minecraft livestreaming through a cloud service such as StreamNeo. The service is intended to loop prerecorded material, deliver it to YouTube Live, operate in the cloud, and recover automatically if a stream is interrupted. It does not improve Minecraft’s frame rate or make a weak gaming PC meet Java’s requirements.

How to Keep Minecraft Videos Live on YouTube 24/7
StreamNeo lets you upload a prerecorded Minecraft video and paste a YouTube stream key to send that content to YouTube Live from the cloud.
Because the stream runs in the cloud while the PC stays off, creators can keep a channel live without leaving a gaming computer or encoder running continuously.
StreamNeo checks stream health every 30 seconds and restarts dropped streams automatically, supporting a more dependable always-on workflow without improving Minecraft’s frame rate or changing the game’s system requirements.
A 24-hour 720p/30fps trial is free with no card at signup, so creators can upload a rights-cleared test video, paste the key, and verify the YouTube Live workflow before committing to a longer-running setup.
Only submit and rebroadcast content for which you have the necessary rights. That includes Minecraft footage, music, narration, images, and material made by other creators. Do not use a continuous-streaming service to rebroadcast someone else’s videos or streams without permission.
Common mistakes when reading Minecraft requirements
- “Below minimum means it cannot launch.” Not necessarily. Mojang says older hardware may still start Java, but performance, visual quality, loading times, and future compatibility are not guaranteed.
- “Java always needs 8 GB RAM.” The current minimum is 8 GB with a discrete GPU or 12 GB with integrated graphics.
- “VRAM is the same as RAM.” It is not. Compare both separately.
- “Bedrock needs 4 GB RAM.” The official Bedrock figure is 4 GB minimum storage, with 8 GB recommended storage.
- “A dedicated server’s requirements tell me whether my laptop can play.” Server and client requirements describe different jobs.
- “Any gaming PC will run Java at a fixed frame rate.” The label is not a benchmark. Check the exact CPU, GPU, VRAM, Vulkan support, RAM, cooling, and settings.
- “Java and Bedrock can join each other normally.” They generally use separate multiplayer ecosystems.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a laptop run Minecraft Java Edition?
Yes, if its specific processor, graphics hardware, Vulkan 1.3 support, VRAM, RAM, operating system, and storage meet the target you need. For the current official minimum, compare it against 1080p/30 FPS on Fast. For a more comfortable 1080p/60 FPS experience, aim for 16 GB of RAM and a stronger modern discrete GPU with about 6 GB of VRAM. Do not rely on the words “gaming laptop” alone.
Can Minecraft Java run on integrated graphics?
It may, provided the graphics hardware and drivers support Vulkan 1.3 and the system meets the other requirements. Mojang’s current Java minimum calls for 12 GB of system RAM when integrated graphics are used, compared with 8 GB when a discrete GPU is installed. Integrated graphics also leave less headroom for shaders, high render distances, and demanding mods.
Can an older Intel Mac run the current Java Edition?
Some may continue to launch the game, but Mojang warns that older Intel-based Macs may fall below the new baseline as Java moves away from OpenGL toward Vulkan. Check the exact Mac model, macOS version, graphics capability, and driver support rather than treating all Macs as equivalent.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo mods and shaders change Minecraft’s official requirements?
They do not change Mojang’s published baseline, but they can require substantially more performance. Heavy modpacks, shaders, high-resolution textures, long render distances, recording, and streaming all reduce the headroom available at the official minimum or recommended target.
Is Bedrock better for a low-end PC?
Bedrock is generally less resource-intensive than Java on comparable systems and is often the more forgiving choice. However, there is no guarantee that every low-end Windows PC will perform identically. Graphics hardware, drivers, processor performance, RAM, render distance, add-ons, and world complexity still matter.
Can Java players play with Bedrock players?
Not through normal native multiplayer. Java and Bedrock generally use separate ecosystems: Java cross-play is for Java players on supported desktop operating systems, while Bedrock cross-play covers supported Windows, console, and mobile platforms. Special third-party bridge systems exist, but they are not the standard compatibility path.
How much storage should I leave for Minecraft?
The official PC page lists 2 GB minimum and 4 GB recommended storage for Java, and 4 GB minimum and 8 GB recommended storage for Bedrock. Leave additional free space for worlds, add-ons, cached data, screenshots, recordings, launcher files, and operating-system updates. Those figures are storage guidance, not RAM requirements.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Can the Bedrock Dedicated Server requirements be used as the requirements for playing Bedrock?
No. Dedicated Server specifications describe a machine hosting a Bedrock world. They do not provide a complete performance specification for the ordinary Bedrock client. Client performance still depends on the player’s device, graphics hardware, drivers, settings, world, and add-ons.
The Bottom Line
For Java Edition, treat 1080p/30 FPS on Fast as the current official minimum target and 1080p/60 FPS on Fancy, 16 GB RAM, and roughly 6 GB of VRAM as the recommended starting point. For Bedrock, choose a supported device and verify its storage, operating system, drivers, and real-world hardware rather than mistaking the published storage figures for RAM requirements. Finally, match the edition to the people you want to play with: Bedrock for console and mobile cross-play, Java for PC-focused play, mods, and Java servers.
