In October 2023, a petition opposing Minecraft’s annual Mob Vote passed 350,000 signatures, according to an Insider Gaming report published October 11. The petition argued that the vote divided players, left losing mob ideas unrealized and reflected a lack of new content. Those were the petition’s criticisms—not independently established findings about Mojang’s release plans.
What was the Stop the Mob Vote petition?
The petition, started by Holly Mavermorne, called for ending the Mob Vote and adding all three candidates—or otherwise increasing the amount of content in Minecraft. PCGamesN reported on October 11, 2023, that it had collected more than 350,000 signatures. Insider Gaming reported the same day that it passed that threshold in four days after the annual vote was announced.

The campaign’s objection was not simply that its preferred mob might lose. It challenged the format of asking players to choose one of several ideas and then leaving the others out. The petition put its concern this way, as quoted by Insider Gaming: “The Mob Vote generates engagement by tearing the community apart, leaving fantastic ideas on the cutting room floor, and teasing content that will never be seen in the game.”
Which mobs were in the 2023 Minecraft Mob Vote?
The 2023 candidates were the crab, penguin and armadillo. Players were asked to choose one candidate for addition to the game; the petition instead called for all three to be added or for Mojang to provide more content by another route. The dispute therefore concerned both the specific candidates and the recurring one-winner format.

Why did supporters criticize the vote?
Losing candidates felt like abandoned ideas
Supporters argued that presenting several concepts raised expectations for content that most voters would not see in the game. In their view, selecting one mob turned the other concepts into unrealized ideas rather than giving players a broader set of additions.
The petition said the format divided players
The petition described the vote as divisive: fans were asked to campaign for competing choices, even though only one could win. That is the petition’s characterization of the community response; the available reporting does not establish it as a measured effect.

Supporters wanted more content
The petition also argued that players were receiving too little new content. That claim should be understood as the campaign’s position, not as a verified account of Mojang’s update cadence. The contemporaneous reports do not establish Mojang’s development rationale or the costs of adding each candidate.
What was the trade-off between the vote and the petition’s proposal?
| Approach | What it offered | Trade-off raised by the controversy |
|---|---|---|
| Mob Vote | Players chose one of three candidates. | The format gave players a direct choice, but the two losing candidates were not selected through that vote. |
| Petition’s preferred approach | Add all three candidates or otherwise increase content. | It would avoid making the vote a single-winner choice, but the reports do not establish the development scope, cost or feasibility of adding every candidate. |
The sources document the petition’s demand and the vote’s format, but do not provide an authoritative explanation from Mojang of why it used that format or what adding all candidates would require.

Did the petition reach 500,000 signatures?
Insider Gaming later updated its article to say the petition was nearing 500,000 signatures after the winner and details about Minecraft 1.21 were revealed. That was a later contemporaneous update to the 2023 story, not a current count. The available reporting does not establish the petition’s final total or whether it changed Mojang’s plans.
