What is confirmed is that the production built physical Minecraft-inspired props and sets, including cubic apples, tools, textured dirt blocks and Steve’s stash room. The film has already been released, so this is a look at documented production design—not a preview of an upcoming movie.
Are the alleged Minecraft movie prop leaks real?
The available production reporting does not authenticate a specific circulating image or establish that any particular object was leaked from the set. A social post claiming to show props could not be independently verified. Treat images described as leaks as unconfirmed unless they are authenticated by the filmmakers or a reliable production source.
That distinction matters: the New Zealand Film Commission (NZFC) documents real physical props and sets used in the film, but that documentation is not proof that an online image is one of those items—or that it came from the set. The NZFC’s account of the production is available in its production-design feature.
Which physical props and sets are confirmed?
The NZFC reports that production teams built Steve’s stash room, cubic apples, tools and textured dirt blocks. Production designer Grant Major led the work with set decorator Amber Richards and prop master Matt Cornelius. Those are documented elements of the film’s production, not a verified inventory of objects shown in alleged leaks.

The challenge was to preserve Minecraft’s instantly recognizable cubic forms while making the designs work at cinematic scale and in close-up performances. Major described the balance this way: “It was very important for us to obey the rules of Minecraft,” he says. “At the same time, the story has real people in it, so there’s a physical world and digital world crossover that I had to navigate.” The quotation appears in the NZFC’s production feature.
How did practical props fit into the movie’s visual design?
A Minecraft Movie combines live-action performers and a digital world. The documented props and sets provided tangible elements for that physical-world side of the design; the film’s wider visual approach also had to connect those elements to the Overworld and its block-based rules. The NZFC describes the design problem as making Minecraft’s cubic forms function on screen without losing their recognizable character.

This is why a genuine production prop and a convincing-looking online image are not interchangeable evidence. The existence of practical tools or textured dirt blocks tells viewers what the production built; it does not confirm the source, date or authenticity of an image circulating online.
Where was the movie filmed?
The production was shot entirely in Aotearoa New Zealand, across Auckland and Waikato, according to the NZFC. Real locations were adapted to portray places in the film:

The NZFC also reports that more than 85% of the crew was based in New Zealand, and that motion capture, visual effects and post-production were completed locally. That crew figure is attributed to the NZFC in 2024; it describes the production workforce, not a share of the props or visual effects.

The official movie site describes A Minecraft Movie as a live-action adaptation directed by Jared Hess, with Grant Major as production designer. Its story follows four people pulled through a portal into the Overworld, where they encounter Steve and must learn the world’s rules.

The film’s release is in the past: international release began April 2, 2025, and it opened in North American theaters and IMAX on April 4, 2025, according to the official movie site. For a making-of companion, Minecraft’s official behind-the-scenes article, published November 17, 2024, points to a cast-and-crew featurette. Its text does not identify or authenticate the objects in alleged leak images.
