They sit behind the canines in both the upper and lower jaws: one first molar and one second molar on each side, for eight primary molars altogether.
Where to find milk molars
Look behind the pointed canine teeth toward the back of the mouth. In each of the four sections—upper left, upper right, lower left and lower right—the first milk molar is in front of the second. Primary teeth do not include premolars, so a child’s molars are the back chewing teeth behind the canines.

The American Dental Association describes molars as teeth with broad chewing surfaces. Its general definition places them behind the premolars, but that adult-tooth terminology does not mean children have premolars among their primary teeth. American Dental Association glossary of dental terms
How many milk molars are there?
Children have eight primary molars: four first molars and four second molars. There are two in each quadrant of the mouth, one on each side of the jaw.

When do milk molars come in and fall out?
Dental organizations publish typical age ranges, not deadlines. The ADA’s chart is marked ©2012; the AAPD’s 2025 reference table gives somewhat different ranges. These are source-specific reference ranges: ADA values are from its chart marked ©2012, and AAPD values are from its 2025 reference PDF. A child’s tooth appearing earlier or later than a chart range by itself does not establish a problem.
How a milk molar differs from the first permanent molar
The first permanent molar appears behind the primary teeth rather than replacing a milk tooth. The AAPD reference places its eruption at about 5.5–7 years in both jaws. This can make it easy to mistake for a new baby molar, particularly because it comes in at the back of the mouth.

Begin brushing as soon as the first primary tooth erupts. The ADA recommends a child-sized toothbrush with a small head and soft bristles, with an adult’s help or supervision. ADA toothbrush guidance
