April 2025 screenings of A Minecraft Movie produced viral clips of fans cheering, shouting “Chicken jockey!” and, in some cases, throwing popcorn. Cinemas responded with venue-specific warnings and restrictions—but the clips do not show that most screenings were disorderly. The key distinction is whether a cinema has explicitly invited audience participation, and whether fans respect its limits.
What happened at A Minecraft Movie screenings?
The film’s recognizable “Chicken jockey!” moment, delivered by Jack Black’s character, became a cue for loud reactions in videos shared online. The Guardian reported audiences cheering and shouting, as well as throwing popcorn. The latter goes beyond enthusiastic participation: it creates a mess and can disrupt other viewers.

The film opened on 4 April 2025 in North America and began its international release on 2 April, according to Warner Bros.’ official movie site. The reaction described here refers to reported incidents around that release, not a continuing or universal pattern.
What rules did cinemas introduce?
There was no single industry-wide rule. The Guardian reported several local responses, which applied at the named venues rather than across the UK or United States.

- Warnings and possible show stoppages: UK cinemas posted warnings. Regent Cinema in Newtown said it would take a “zero-tolerance approach” and stop screenings if audiences went too far.
- Adult supervision at one New Jersey theater: Township Theatre in Washington, New Jersey, barred unaccompanied minors after an incident it described as “unfortunate” on 4 April. In a social-media post quoted by The Guardian, the theater said unsupervised groups of boys had engaged in unacceptable behavior, including vandalism, and that minors needed a parent or responsible adult. This was a local response, not a national policy.
- Different experiences at different screenings: Staff at a Cineworld in Didsbury, Manchester, told The Guardian that early-afternoon screenings they had encountered were quiet, with no rowdy or antisocial behavior.
These reported examples show why a viral clip should not be treated as a measure of what audiences generally did. The sources do not establish what share of screenings were disruptive.
Can you cheer during a Minecraft movie screening?
It depends on the event and the venue’s rules. At an ordinary screening, do not assume that shouting, cosplay or other audience participation is welcome just because clips of it have gone viral. Follow posted instructions and staff directions; a cinema may intervene, eject patrons or stop a show if conduct disrupts the screening.

Cineworld UK offered a different setting: one-off Chicken Jockey 4DX screenings on 13 April 2025. Its announcement invited fans to dress as Minecraft characters and whoop, clap or shout the catchphrase. Cineworld described 4DX as using motion, strobe lighting, wind, water spray and smells. The invitation came with a boundary: “No mess please, just good clean fun.”
Cineworld’s later retrospective described the film’s Block Party Edition as including on-screen lyrics and characterized the designated Chicken Jockey screenings as events where fans were invited to react. That makes the practical difference clear: participation is appropriate when the venue has invited it, but throwing food or disrupting a regular showing is not covered by that invitation.

Ordinary screening or participation event?
| What to check | Ordinary screening | Designated participation event |
|---|---|---|
| Shouting or cosplay | Do not assume it is permitted; follow the cinema’s posted rules. | May be explicitly invited, as at Cineworld’s one-off 13 April 2025 Chicken Jockey 4DX screenings. |
| Food and cleanup | Throwing food can disrupt other viewers and create a mess. | Cineworld’s event invitation still asked fans to keep it clean. |
| Staff response | Venue responses reported by The Guardian included warnings and the possibility of stopping a screening. | The invitation to react did not waive the venue’s cleanliness boundary or other applicable rules. |
| Age or supervision rules | Check the individual cinema’s current policy; Township Theatre’s restriction was local. | Check the event’s own terms and the venue’s current policy. |
Event offers and local restrictions described above are historical, tied to April 2025 reporting and announcements. Check the cinema directly for current rules before attending.
