If Minecraft multiplayer stopped working after you moved your Java Edition account from Mojang to Microsoft, first sign out of the Minecraft Launcher and sign back in with the Microsoft account that owns the game. This is a player-reported workaround, not a guaranteed or official migration repair. Also confirm that the account whose privacy settings you checked is the same account you use in the launcher.
Try signing in again with the account that owns Minecraft
- Sign out of the Minecraft Launcher.
- Sign back in using the Microsoft account that completed the migration and owns Minecraft: Java Edition.
- Check multiplayer permissions while signed into that same account.
This sequence comes from a May 2022 Microsoft Q&A report. The player said multiplayer was disabled despite having enabled privacy settings, and later reported that signing out and back in worked. An Independent Advisor suggested checking whether the settings belonged to the migrated account. That is useful evidence for trying a fresh sign-in, but one user’s successful report does not establish that it will fix every multiplayer problem.

Check account ownership and permissions
Make sure the launcher account owns the game
Verify that the Microsoft account currently signed into the launcher is the one that owns Minecraft: Java Edition. Minecraft’s sign-in troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the purchase confirmation or Microsoft order history if you are unsure which account owns the game. Using a different Microsoft account to check privacy settings can make those checks irrelevant to the account playing Minecraft.
Review permissions for child accounts
Multiplayer access can depend on account permissions, particularly for child accounts. Check the settings for the account signed into the launcher, rather than assuming that settings on another Microsoft account apply. Minecraft’s multiplayer requirements and options explain the relevant account and platform prerequisites.

Try the Xbox app sign-in step
If you are still seeing a sign-in error, Minecraft says signing into the Xbox app before signing into Minecraft can sometimes help. Use the Microsoft account that owns the game in both places. This is an additional sign-in troubleshooting step; it does not change the account’s ownership or permissions.
Check edition, version, and connection requirements
Confirm that you are joining a compatible edition
Java players can join Java-hosted games; Bedrock players join Bedrock worlds, Realms, or LAN games. A Java account cannot join a Bedrock-hosted game simply because both players are using Minecraft. Check which edition the host is running before changing account settings.

For Bedrock, check release and multiplayer settings
Minecraft’s Bedrock multiplayer troubleshooting advises updating the game, using the latest release rather than a preview or snapshot, and checking multiplayer permissions. These are Bedrock-specific checks; they should not be treated as a single universal fix for Java Edition.
Check basic access requirements
- Use a stable internet connection, or connect over LAN when that is how the game is hosted.
- Use a current game release where applicable.
- On consoles, an active platform online subscription may be required.
- To join a Realm, you need an invitation from its host.
These are general multiplayer requirements, not signs that account migration itself failed.

Migration is no longer available for accounts that missed it
Minecraft’s migration FAQ says the Java Edition Mojang-to-Microsoft migration officially ended on December 18, 2023, and that Minecraft Support will no longer assist with migration-related queries. The official announcement describes an earlier milestone: unmigrated accounts could no longer sign in to migrate starting September 19, 2023, when Support also stopped assisting with migration tickets. In the September 19 update to Mojang Account migration completed, Minecraft Staff wrote: “It is no longer possible to migrate unmigrated accounts or make the move.” See the migration FAQ and the official migration announcement.
If you already completed migration, those end dates do not explain a later sign-in or permissions issue by themselves. Work through account ownership, authentication, permissions, edition, and connection requirements. Do not create a new account casually as a troubleshooting step: Minecraft says a new Microsoft account joining an existing multiplayer world enters as a new player at the default spawn point, without their old inventory. The player may be able to travel to their former base to recover stored items, but previous Java account capes and skins are not recoverable, and the new username may differ.
