The Tiny Takeover game drop, released on March 24, 2026, added the recipe to both Java Edition and Bedrock Edition. Combine 1 paper with 1 metal nugget to make a name tag. Before a tag can rename anything, put it in an anvil, enter the custom name, take the renamed tag from the output slot, and use it on the target mob.

Name tags can still come from generated-structure chest loot or fishing, but those methods are chance-based. Crafting is the predictable route whenever your world has a version containing Tiny Takeover.

Which versions added craftable name tags?
The feature arrived with the Tiny Takeover game drop on March 24, 2026. Mojang’s release information describes the change for both editions, while the edition-specific notes identify the relevant version numbers.

| Edition or release information | What it establishes |
|---|---|
| Java Edition 26.1 release notes | The exact recipe is 1 Paper and 1 of any Metal Nugget. |

The practical test is simple: open a crafting interface in your world and look for the name-tag recipe. If it is absent, first check the edition and version shown by the game launcher or title screen. A world running a release from before Tiny Takeover will follow the older rules, and a preview, snapshot, or server may not match the version of the client you are reading about.
How to craft a name tag
Gather the two inputs
You need one paper and one metal nugget. The recipe accepts any metal nugget that the current version recognizes for the recipe; you do not need a special name-tag-only material. If the recipe book is available in your interface, it is the safest way to confirm which nugget items your exact edition accepts.
Combine them in the crafting interface
- Open a crafting interface in the world.
- Place one paper and one valid metal nugget into the crafting grid.
- Take the resulting name tag from the output slot.
The recipe is deterministic: once the feature is present and both inputs are valid, the game supplies the tag rather than rolling a loot chance. Keep the newly crafted item separate from ordinary tags if you are preparing several mobs, because every tag must be renamed before use.
What to do when the recipe does not appear
- Confirm that the world is running a Java or Bedrock release containing Tiny Takeover.
- Check that you placed paper, not a different paper-like item, and a metal nugget recognized by the recipe.
- Verify that you are looking at the output of the correct crafting interface rather than a search result filtered by an old recipe book state.
- If the world is hosted on a server, check the server’s game version as well as your local client; the server controls which recipes are available in that world.
Do not use the absence of a recipe as evidence that name tags are permanently uncraftable. It usually indicates a version, edition, item, or server mismatch.
Other ways to obtain name tags
Generated-structure chest loot
Name tags can appear in chests found in generated structures. This route costs no paper or nugget, but it requires exploration and depends on the world’s loot generation. The cited references confirm chest loot as an acquisition route but do not establish one current probability that is safe to apply across all editions, versions, and structures.

Fishing
Fishing is another established source. It requires time and a suitable fishing setup, while the result is chance-based. The available references likewise do not provide a current, edition-neutral percentage for receiving a name tag, so any precise number would be misleading.

Crafting versus searching
| Route | Certainty once available | What you spend | What can slow it down |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crafting | Deterministic | One paper and one metal nugget per tag | The recipe must exist in the world’s version, and both inputs must be accepted. |
| Structure chests | Chance-based | Exploration time and the risk of reaching generated structures | Finding structures and getting the desired loot roll. |
| Fishing | Chance-based | Fishing time and equipment | Waiting for a name tag to be selected by the fishing loot process. |
Choose crafting when you want a known number of tags and have the current recipe. Choose chest hunting when exploration is already part of your objective. Choose fishing when you are willing to wait for an uncertain result rather than spend the crafting inputs.
How to rename a name tag in an anvil
A newly obtained name tag is not ready to apply directly. It must first carry the custom name you want the mob to display.
- Place an anvil in the world and open its interface.
- Put the name tag into the anvil’s input slot.
- Enter the desired custom name in the anvil text field.
- Take the renamed tag from the output slot.
Use the exact spelling, capitalization, spacing, and punctuation you want displayed before taking the output. The item in your inventory after step four is the usable version; an unrenamed tag has not completed this process.
Planning names before you spend a tag
Because the tag is consumed when it is applied, decide which mob should receive each name before you leave the anvil. A simple naming plan helps when you are labeling several animals or organizing a base: prepare one tag, verify its output name, then apply it to the intended target rather than carrying multiple identically named tags.

How to apply a renamed tag to a mob
- Move the renamed tag to your active hand.
- Stand close enough to the target mob for the use action to reach it.
- Use the tag on the mob, following your edition’s normal interaction control.
- Confirm that the mob now displays the custom name.
The tag is consumed by a successful application. That means the item disappears after it has done its job; the mob’s displayed name is the lasting result of the action, not an item that remains in your inventory.
Villagers and wandering traders
A name tag has a special interaction with villagers and wandering traders: using it renames the mob instead of opening the trading interface. If your intention is to trade, do not use the tag while targeting that villager or wandering trader. If your intention is to label the character, the name-tag interaction is the action that changes its displayed name.
Other mobs
For another target, the same sequence applies: rename the tag first, hold it, and use it on the mob. If nothing happens, check the troubleshooting steps below instead of repeatedly clicking, because a tag that has already been consumed cannot be recovered from the inventory.
Troubleshooting: why a name tag may not work
The recipe is missing
Start with the version check. Craftable tags are tied to the Tiny Takeover-era releases, not to every historical Minecraft version. Confirm that the world is on Java 26.1 or the corresponding Bedrock release line that includes the March 24, 2026 drop. On a multiplayer world, the server’s version is decisive.
The output is not a name tag
Recheck both inputs. The recipe requires one paper and one metal nugget accepted by the current recipe. A visually similar material, a nugget from an item set the recipe does not recognize, or an item placed in the wrong interface will not produce the intended output.

The tag will not apply to a mob
Return to the anvil. The reference instructions require the tag to be renamed there before it is applied. Put the item back into the anvil, enter the name, take the output item, and then try the use action again. Also make sure the renamed output—not an untouched tag from your inventory—is in your active hand.
The villager’s trade screen did not open
Check whether you were holding a name tag while targeting the villager or wandering trader. That interaction is reserved for renaming the mob, so it does not open the trading interface. Switch to the item or interaction you normally use for trading when you want the trade screen.

The tag disappeared
A successful application consumes the tag by design. If the mob now shows the intended custom name, the action worked. If no name appeared, inspect the target and the item you used, then repeat the anvil-renaming process with another tag rather than expecting the consumed item to return.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which acquisition route should you choose?
Choose crafting for a planned build
Crafting is the best fit when you know how many named mobs you need and your world includes Tiny Takeover. The material requirement is fixed per tag, and the result does not depend on finding a particular structure or waiting for a fishing roll. This makes it suitable for organized farms, display areas, and any project with a predetermined naming list.
Choose chest exploration for incidental finds
Chest loot makes sense when you are already exploring generated structures. A tag can arrive as part of the broader loot you are collecting, but you cannot plan a delivery time from the information currently established for all editions and versions. Treat it as an opportunity rather than a guaranteed supply.

Choose fishing for a time-based gamble
Fishing can produce a tag without using the crafting inputs, but it is the least predictable route. It is useful when you are already fishing for other reasons and do not mind waiting. It is a poor choice when a build has a deadline and the recipe is available.

- Outdated: “Name tags cannot be crafted.” Current correction: Tiny Takeover added a recipe using paper and a metal nugget in both editions.
- Outdated: “A found tag can be used immediately.” Current correction: The tag must first be renamed in an anvil.
- Outdated: “Using a tag leaves the item in your inventory.” Current correction: A successful application consumes the tag.
- Outdated: “The same interaction always opens a villager’s trades.” Current correction: Holding a name tag and using it on a villager or wandering trader renames that mob instead.
- Unsupported: A universal fishing or chest-loot percentage. Current correction: The established references confirm both routes but do not provide one authoritative probability that applies safely across editions and versions.
A reliable name-tag workflow
For a repeatable process, separate acquisition from application:
- Check the world’s edition and version before gathering materials.
- If Tiny Takeover is present, craft the tag from the two required inputs; otherwise use chest exploration or fishing if those are your available routes.
- Prepare the anvil and rename the tag before approaching the mob.
- Read the output name carefully, then take the renamed item.
- Hold that output item and use it on the intended target.
- Verify the displayed name, especially when several mobs are close together.
This sequence prevents the two most common avoidable errors: trying to apply an unrenamed tag and using a correctly renamed tag on the wrong target. It also makes the tag’s one-use behavior easy to account for in a larger project.
Bottom line
In Minecraft versions containing the March 24, 2026 Tiny Takeover drop, a name tag is no longer a loot-only item. Craft one with one paper and one metal nugget, rename it in an anvil, and use the renamed tag on a mob. Chest loot and fishing remain alternatives, but they are chance-based and have no single current probability that can be quoted reliably across editions.
