If Minecraft will not install on a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC, first identify which part is failing: the Minecraft Launcher, Java Edition, Minecraft for Windows (Bedrock), Microsoft Store, Xbox app, or Gaming Services. Use the least destructive fix that matches the symptom, and verify the Microsoft account and PC entitlement before buying the game again.
Identify what is failing
“Minecraft won’t install” can describe several different problems. A launcher download failure is not the same as Bedrock failing inside an already-installed launcher.

Test another small app from Microsoft Store. If that also fails, troubleshoot Windows Store infrastructure first. If other apps install normally, concentrate on Minecraft’s account entitlement, edition requirements, Launcher package, or Gaming Services.
Check the edition and installation target
- Minecraft Launcher: the hub used to access Minecraft games on PC.
- Java Edition: the edition for Windows, macOS, and Linux, with separate requirements and multiplayer limitations.
- Minecraft for Windows: the current official name commonly associated with Bedrock or “Windows 10 Edition.” It uses more Microsoft/Xbox service integration and supports cross-platform play.
The Launcher can install successfully while Java or Minecraft for Windows fails afterward. Treat those as separate installation problems. Minecraft’s official PC page lists the edition requirements and explains that an existing PC purchase should appear when you sign in with the Microsoft account used to buy it: Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC.

Confirm that Windows and the hardware are supported
Meeting these figures does not guarantee a successful installation, but a device below the stated requirements may have the Install control hidden or blocked.

Check Settings > System > About for the Windows version and system type. Windows on ARM and 32-bit Windows deserve special attention because compatibility differs from conventional 64-bit x64 PCs. Also leave additional free space for updates, caches, launcher files, and worlds.
Try these fixes first
1. Restart Windows
Restart before deeper repairs, especially after Windows has installed updates. A pending restart can prevent Microsoft Store apps from installing. Microsoft recommends restarting as part of its Store-app troubleshooting: Microsoft’s Store installation guidance.
2. Install Windows updates
- Windows 11: Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
- Windows 10: Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for updates.
Install available updates and restart again.
3. Update Microsoft Store
Open Microsoft Store > Library > Get updates. Let Store update itself and its components, then restart Windows and retry Minecraft.

4. Check every Microsoft account
Microsoft Store, Xbox, Minecraft Launcher, and the browser used for the purchase can be signed into different accounts. Confirm that:
- the Store and Xbox app use the account that owns Minecraft or has the relevant PC Game Pass entitlement;
- the purchase was for PC, not only Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, iOS, or Android;
- the device is authorized under that account;
- a work or school account is not controlling Store access.
Do not repurchase Minecraft until you check the original account’s order history. A successful sign-in does not prove that it is the account that owns the PC version.

Confirm that the system drive has room beyond Minecraft’s listed minimum. In Microsoft Store or Xbox settings, check whether new apps are being directed to a disconnected, removable, unavailable, or permission-restricted drive. A path-related failure can produce errors such as 0x80070003.
Repair Microsoft Store
Clear the Store cache with wsreset.exe
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
wsreset.exeand press Enter. - Wait for the process to finish and try the installation again.
This clears a Store cache. It is not a universal repair for licensing, AppX package, policy, or Gaming Services failures.

Use Repair, then Reset
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft Store.
- Select the three-dot menu > Advanced options.
- Choose Repair.
- If that fails, choose Reset.
Repair is the safer first choice. Reset is more disruptive: it can remove local app data and sign-in state, so expect to sign in again. Repeat the same process for the Xbox app and Minecraft Launcher when appropriate. Microsoft documents these recovery options in its Windows app guidance: repair and reset app problems.
If Microsoft Store is missing entirely, the PC may be using a local account or may be managed by a school or employer. An administrator can disable Store access; contact that administrator rather than trying to bypass the policy. See Microsoft’s guidance for a missing Microsoft Store.

Gaming Services and Xbox integration are particularly important when the Launcher installs but Minecraft for Windows does not. They are less likely to be the first cause when the Launcher itself cannot download.
- Open the Xbox app and sign in with the same Microsoft account used for Minecraft.
- Run the Gaming Services Repair Tool if it is offered.
- Restart Windows.
- Update both Xbox and Microsoft Store.
- Retry Minecraft for Windows.
Use Microsoft’s official tools and instructions:
Avoid making PowerShell removal commands your default fix. Commands that remove Gaming Services can require administrator access, vary between Windows versions, and leave the system harder to repair. Use them only when an authoritative Microsoft procedure specifically calls for them and explains how to reinstall the component.

Reinstall the Launcher safely
Use Minecraft’s official download page, not a third-party mirror or unofficial launcher: Minecraft download page.
Under the Windows 10/11 option, choose either the Microsoft Store route or the official Download Launcher option. The direct download gives you another official Launcher installation path when Store’s interface is malfunctioning, but it does not bypass account ownership, game licensing, or every Xbox-related dependency.
After installing:
- Open Minecraft Launcher.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the PC edition or has the relevant entitlement.
- Choose Java Edition or Minecraft for Windows.
- Install that game component separately.
Before uninstalling or resetting the Launcher, back up important local worlds and settings. Reinstalling the Launcher is not an unconditional guarantee that local data will remain untouched, particularly when other game folders or third-party tools are involved.

- Sign out of Minecraft Launcher.
- Sign out of Microsoft Store and sign back in with the original purchasing account.
- Check the Microsoft account order history.
- Confirm that the purchase was the PC edition.
- Reopen the Launcher and allow the entitlement to synchronize.
An Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, iOS, or Android purchase does not automatically prove that the Windows PC edition is owned. Likewise, a PC purchase attached to a different Microsoft account will not appear simply because that account is present on the computer.

Error-code triage
Error codes are clues, not universal diagnoses. Record the exact code, the app that displayed it, and whether the failure was a missing button, a stuck download, or an immediate error.

If support is needed, provide the full code, Windows version, architecture, affected edition, Microsoft account situation, and whether other Store apps install. Do not assume that two different codes have the same fix.
Later-stage checks
Security software and network
Third-party antivirus, endpoint security, VPNs, proxies, parental-control filters, and corporate networks can interfere with Microsoft services. As a controlled diagnostic test, temporarily pause third-party protection or try another network, then restore protection immediately. Do not permanently disable Microsoft Defender, firewall protections, or security software.
Also verify the PC’s date, time, and time zone if sign-in or licensing repeatedly fails. Work and school devices may require an administrator to repair Store or Xbox access.
Escalate in this order
- Repair the affected app.
- Reset it, after backing up important local data and accepting that sign-in state may be removed.
- Reinstall Minecraft Launcher from the official Minecraft page.
- Use Microsoft’s supported Xbox and Gaming Services repair tools.
- Use Windows Store or program-installation troubleshooting.
- Contact Minecraft or Microsoft/Xbox Support with the complete error details.
- Consider Reset this PC > Keep my files only for broader Windows installation corruption, after making backups.
Protect worlds before destructive fixes
Back up worlds before uninstalling, resetting, deleting game folders, changing install drives, or using package-removal commands. Java worlds are normally stored separately from Launcher app state, but that is not a reason to make an unconditional safety promise. Bedrock saves and synchronization can depend on the local installation and account, so avoid deleting folders unless you know exactly what they contain and have a backup.
