“Minecraft: Pocket Edition” is the familiar name many players still use, but current Minecraft guidance groups Android and iOS play under Bedrock Edition. On mobile, you can join a friend’s world, play on a Realm, or connect to a server. Which option fits depends mainly on whether the host needs to be online, how many people will play, and whether you want a persistent world.
What happened to Minecraft: Pocket Edition?
For current instructions, look for Minecraft on mobile and Bedrock Edition, rather than expecting a separate Pocket Edition multiplayer system. Minecraft’s Realms documentation lists Android and iOS among Bedrock platforms that can cross-play with other Bedrock players. The old title remains familiar, but the edition label you need for current multiplayer help is Bedrock. Minecraft Realms for Bedrock
Bedrock cross-play does not mean every version of Minecraft can join every other version: Java players join Java games, while Bedrock players join Bedrock games. For device-specific minimum requirements, check the Minecraft listing in your device’s official app store; a universal phone model or performance guarantee is not established here.
What are the multiplayer options on mobile?
Minecraft Help describes three Bedrock online multiplayer routes: join a friend’s world, join a Realm, or play together on a server. Minecraft Help: How to Play Minecraft Multiplayer

| Option | Does the host need to be online? | Group size and access | Cost and included content |
|---|---|---|---|
| Friend’s world | Yes. The friend hosting the world must be online and have it open and joinable. | Join the friend’s visible world; both players must be friends in Minecraft. Player limit is not stated in the cited source. | No Realm subscription is required to join. Any other cost is not stated in the cited source. |
| Bedrock Realm | No. A Realm is a persistent private server friends can access while its owner is offline. | The official page lists the owner plus two other simultaneous players for Bedrock Realms, or the owner plus ten for Realms Plus. Friends invited to a Realm do not need their own Realm subscription. | Minecraft’s page reviewed October 8, 2026 lists Bedrock Realms at $3.99 USD/month and Realms Plus at $7.99 USD/month. Realms Plus includes access to curated Marketplace content. Prices and terms vary by region and can change. |
| Server | Not stated in the cited source; availability depends on the server. | Minecraft Help lists servers as an option, but does not establish a universal player limit or that every server is private. | Cost and included content are not stated in the cited source. |
Join a friend’s world
This is the straightforward choice when the host is usually available and the group does not need a world that stays accessible while the host is away. Both players must be online and friends in Minecraft. In the game, open Play, choose Friends, then select a visible friend whose world is joinable. Minecraft Help: How to Play Minecraft Multiplayer
Join a Realm
A Realm is the persistent option: it is a private server that remains available when the owner is offline. That makes it useful for a group that wants to return to a shared world at different times. Invited friends can play without purchasing their own Realm subscription. Minecraft Realms for Bedrock

- The classic UNO card game builds fun on game night with a Minecraft theme.
- UNO Minecraft features a deck and storage tin decorated with graphics from the popular video game.
- Players match colors and numbers to the card on top of the discard pile as in the classic game.
- The Creeper card unique to this deck forces other players to draw 3 cards.
- Makes a great gift for kid, teen, adult and family game nights with 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, especially Minecraft and video game fans.
Play on a server
Minecraft Help includes servers as a Bedrock multiplayer route, but the cited guidance does not specify a universal server size, price, or privacy arrangement. Check the particular server’s access rules and confirm that it supports Bedrock before trying to join; do not assume Java and Bedrock players can join the same game.
Which Realm plan fits your group?

- Now Minecraft lovers can play a special version of UNO!
- Same as Basic UNO but features Minecraft characters and includes special Creeper rule card. Draw this card and the other players have to draw three more cards from the pile!
- The goal is to get rid of all the cards in your hand.
- First player or team to 500 wins.
- When you're down to one card, don't forget to yell "UNO"!
| Plan | Listed price | Simultaneous players | Marketplace content |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bedrock Realms | $3.99 USD/month, listed by Minecraft on October 8, 2026; region-dependent and subject to change. | Owner plus two other players | Curated Marketplace catalog not listed as included in this plan comparison. |
| Realms Plus | $7.99 USD/month, listed by Minecraft on October 8, 2026; region-dependent and subject to change. | Owner plus ten other players | Includes access to curated Marketplace content. |
Choose based on the number of people who need to play at the same time and whether the included content catalog matters to your group. If the host is normally around and persistence is unnecessary, joining that player’s world may be enough.
What do you need before mobile multiplayer works?
- Matching edition: everyone needs to use Bedrock for a Bedrock game. Java and Bedrock are separate multiplayer editions.
- Matching, current versions: update the game and have players check that they are on compatible releases. Minecraft Help recommends using the latest release.
- Microsoft account sign-in: mobile players need to sign in with or link a Microsoft account for multiplayer.
- A working connection: use a strong, stable internet connection for online play, or an appropriate LAN connection for local-network play.
- World access and permissions: for a friend’s world, the host must be online with a joinable world and the players must be friends in Minecraft. Child accounts may need multiplayer permissions enabled.
Console online-subscription rules are separate; do not apply them automatically to Minecraft on mobile. Minecraft Help: Multiplayer Troubleshooting

How to troubleshoot a mobile multiplayer connection
- Check the edition: confirm that everyone is using Bedrock, not a Java game.
- Update the game: check each device’s app store and Minecraft’s in-game update prompt for an available release. The Bedrock 26.30 changelog includes iOS and Android fixes and Realms Hub changes, but that does not establish that 26.30 is the latest build on every device or storefront. Minecraft Bedrock 26.30 changelog
- Confirm the host is available: for a friend’s world, ask the host to go online and make the world joinable. A Realm is the alternative when the owner being offline is the problem.
- Check friends and sign-in: make sure the players are friends in Minecraft where required, and that the mobile player is signed in with a Microsoft account.
- Review child-account permissions: if a child cannot join multiplayer, check whether their account’s multiplayer permissions allow it.
- Test the connection: verify that the internet or LAN connection is stable, then try joining again.
Can you use a controller with Minecraft on mobile?
A controller is optional, not a multiplayer requirement. Minecraft’s platform comparison lists both touch and controller compatibility for mobile, so a Bluetooth phone controller may suit players who prefer physical input. That category-level support does not guarantee that a particular controller works with every phone, operating-system version, or game build. Check the controller maker’s compatibility information and return terms before buying. Minecraft platform comparison
Frequently asked setup questions
Do mobile players need a Realm subscription to join a friend?
No. A Realm subscription is for the Realm owner; invited friends can join without buying their own Realm. A friend’s hosted world is another option when the host is online.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
Can Minecraft on Android or iPhone cross-play with another platform?
It can cross-play with other Bedrock players, subject to matching edition and compatible versions. The Realms documentation names Android and iOS within the Bedrock ecosystem.
Is Pocket Edition still a separate multiplayer edition?
For current mobile guidance, use the Bedrock Edition label. “Pocket Edition” is the familiar historical wording, while current official mobile multiplayer materials describe Bedrock.
