Which OptiFine version should you download?
On the official downloads page, the Minecraft 1.20.2 section lists OptiFine HD U I7 pre1. It is dated December 21, 2023 and is explicitly labeled a preview release, not a final OptiFine version. The page also lists Forge: N/A for this build.
Do not substitute a newer file. OptiFine releases for Minecraft 1.20.4, 1.20.6, 1.21.x, and later versions are not automatically compatible with 1.20.2. As of August 12, 2026, 1.20.2 is also an older target compared with the newer versions shown in OptiFine’s catalog.

How to install OptiFine 1.20.2
1. Open or install the official Minecraft Launcher
Install the official launcher from Minecraft’s download page if it is not already installed. The Java Edition launcher is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux and manages the game’s installations and profiles.

2. Create a Minecraft 1.20.2 installation
Open the launcher and go to the Java Edition installation controls. Create or select a release installation for 1.20.2. Do not select Latest Release; that normally points to a newer Minecraft version.
The exact layout can vary between launcher versions, but the relevant settings are the installation’s Minecraft version and its game directory. Confirm that the version is shown as 1.20.2 before continuing.
3. Run vanilla Minecraft 1.20.2 once
Launch the 1.20.2 installation without OptiFine and wait until Minecraft reaches the main menu. Then close the game normally.
This first launch downloads and creates the 1.20.2 files and game-directory structure that the OptiFine installer expects. It is an important step, especially if 1.20.2 has never been run on the computer before.

4. Download the matching OptiFine JAR
Visit the official OptiFine downloads page and find the section headed Minecraft 1.20.2. Select OptiFine HD U I7 pre1, then use the official download or official mirror option provided by OptiFine.
Before opening the file, check its name. It should identify both Minecraft 1.20.2 and the HD U I7 pre1 build. Do not open a file intended for Minecraft 1.20, 1.20.1, 1.20.4, 1.20.6, or another version simply because its name also contains “OptiFine.”
5. Run the OptiFine installer
Double-click the downloaded JAR file. The OptiFine installer should open. Select Install.
The installer adds an OptiFine installation or profile to the official Minecraft Launcher. You should not need to delete META-INF, manually edit a Minecraft version JAR, or extract random files from the installer. Those are outdated or inappropriate first steps for this installation method.
6. Select the OptiFine profile
Reopen or refresh the official Minecraft Launcher. In the Java Edition installation selector, choose the profile named OptiFine or the equivalent OptiFine installation created by the installer.
Open the profile’s settings and confirm that it targets Minecraft 1.20.2. Then click Play. If the launcher displays a warning about modified or third-party software, review it and proceed only if the file came from the official OptiFine download page.
7. Verify the installation in Minecraft
After the game reaches the main menu, check the title or version information shown there and open the video-settings menu. OptiFine-specific video options or controls are a practical indication that the OptiFine profile loaded.

This is a user-side verification step, not a guarantee that every shader, resource pack, or other mod will work. If the game starts through the OptiFine profile but a later addition causes problems, test the profile without that addition.

A JAR file is executable Java software. If double-clicking it opens an archive program, shows an error, or produces no visible response, the computer may not have a working Java association for JAR files.
- Use the operating system’s Open with option and select the installed Java application.
- Install or repair a suitable Java runtime if Java is not installed or its file association is broken.
- Download the installer again from the official OptiFine page if the file appears incomplete.
- Do not rename the JAR to another file type or extract its contents as a substitute for running the installer.
The precise command for launching a JAR varies by operating system and Java installation, so using a generic command can create a second problem. Repairing the Java association through the operating system or opening the file with the installed Java application is the safer first remedy.
Common installation problems
The launcher starts the wrong Minecraft version
Edit the selected launcher installation and check both values: Minecraft must be 1.20.2, and the selected profile must be the OptiFine installation. Do not start Latest Release when testing this guide. The launcher normally defaults to the newest release, while older Java Edition versions must be selected through the installation controls.
The OptiFine installer says it cannot find Minecraft
- Close the installer.
- Launch vanilla Minecraft 1.20.2 from the official launcher.
- Wait until the main menu appears, then close Minecraft.
- Run the OptiFine JAR again.
Also check that the launcher and the installer are using the same Minecraft game directory. A custom directory or a different launcher profile can prevent the installer from seeing the files created during the vanilla launch.

The file opens as a ZIP or archive
Use Open with to choose Java. A JAR may technically be readable as an archive, but browsing its contents is not the OptiFine installation process. Do not remove files or manually modify the Minecraft version JAR.
Minecraft crashes after other mods are added
First return to a clean OptiFine 1.20.2 profile and confirm that it launches by itself. Then add other modifications one at a time, starting the game after each change. This identifies the conflicting component instead of leaving several possible causes at once.

OptiFine’s FAQ notes that another mod can overwrite OptiFine classes and generally recommends installing OptiFine last when it is being used with compatible mods. That advice does not establish compatibility for every mod loader or mod. In this particular case, the 1.20.2 build is a preview and its official listing says Forge: N/A, so do not assume official Forge compatibility.
Can you use OptiFine 1.20.2 with Forge?
Do not assume so. The official OptiFine downloads listing marks Forge as N/A for OptiFine HD U I7 pre1 on Minecraft 1.20.2. Install it first in a clean profile and consult the current compatibility documentation for any loader or mod you intend to use.
If a modpack is involved, check its own instructions rather than inserting OptiFine into it automatically. OptiFine’s FAQ also says that including OptiFine in a modpack generally requires explicit permission. A standalone OptiFine profile is the least ambiguous way to determine whether this specific preview build works on the computer.
Why did performance not improve?
OptiFine does not guarantee a particular FPS increase. Its FAQ explains that results depend on settings, texture packs, render distance, frame-rate limits, graphics drivers, and conflicts with other mods.
For a meaningful comparison:
- Use the same world and location.
- Keep render distance, simulation distance, graphics quality, texture packs, and FPS limits the same.
- Compare vanilla 1.20.2 with the clean OptiFine profile before adding shaders or other mods.
- Change one graphics setting at a time.
Some quality options can reduce performance rather than improve it. In particular, very high render distance, antialiasing, and anisotropic filtering may impose a larger graphics workload. OptiFine is a set of configurable tools, not an automatic promise of faster gameplay on every computer.

Do not replace the profile that contains your current mods or worlds just to test a preview release. Create a separate 1.20.2 installation and, where practical, use a separate game directory. Keep a backup of important saves before testing.
Once the clean profile launches, you can decide whether the benefits are worth attempting a more complicated combination. Check the documentation for each mod, resource pack, shader, or loader independently; OptiFine 1.20.2’s preview status means that compatibility should be established rather than assumed.
