Find a pillager outpost by exploring its compatible biomes or by locating it from your world seed, then clear it from cover: use ranged attacks, a shield, blocks and an escape route; kill the banner captain before taking the tower floor by floor. Destroying the tower alone does not stop pillagers from spawning, and a captain defeated outside a raid now provides an Ominous Bottle instead of directly giving Bad Omen.

What a pillager outpost is and why it is worth clearing
A pillager outpost is a hostile illager structure built around a tall wooden watchtower. Pillagers can spawn around it, a banner-wearing captain can appear there, and the site may contain a chest and additional generated features. An outpost is useful as a combat challenge, a source of crossbows and other supplies, a place to find allays or an iron golem in a cage, and a repeatable source of Ominous Bottles from captains outside raids.
The safest objective is not “break the tower as fast as possible.” It is to control the sight lines, remove exposed enemies, secure each level, inspect the surrounding features and then decide whether you want to neutralize the area, use it for a farm or return with an Ominous Bottle for a raid-related encounter.

Explore the biomes where outposts can generate
Search the following village-compatible biomes:
- Plains
- Deserts
- Savannas
- Taigas
- Snowy plains
- Meadows
Outposts can also generate in mountain biomes, including groves, snowy slopes, jagged peaks, frozen peaks and cherry groves. In practice, the tower is easiest to spot from open ground, a ridge or a high tree line. Listen for pillager crossbows and hostile-mob sounds as you travel; audio can reveal a structure hidden by terrain before you see the tower.

Do villages guarantee an outpost?
No. Villages and pillager outposts generate independently. A village can be a convenient landmark, but it is not evidence that an outpost is nearby, and an outpost can exist with no village in sight. The same caution applies to patrols: a patrol may be encountered while you are close to an outpost, but patrols do not reliably lead you to one.
Use a seed-and-edition-matched structure finder
If you know the world seed, a structure finder is usually faster and safer than a blind search. The important part is matching the tool’s edition and version to the world you are playing. A Java coordinate can be wrong for a Bedrock world, and a version mismatch can change structure placement.

- Copy the exact seed from the world settings or the command output used when the world was created.
- Open the structure-finder map and select Java or Bedrock.
- Select the precise game version. The current finder documentation covers Java and Bedrock through version 26.3 and was updated on October 7, 2026.
- Enter the seed and let the map mark pillager outposts.
- Read the X and Z coordinates for a location you can reach. Keep the Y coordinate supplied by the tool as a navigation aid, but verify the terrain in-game.
- Copy the optional teleport command if you are using cheats or a test world. In survival, use the coordinates as a destination rather than enabling commands solely to avoid the journey.
Always check the selected dimension as well as the seed. A correct seed in the Nether or the End will not locate an Overworld outpost.
Locate one from inside the game
In a cheats-enabled world, run:
/locate structure pillager_outpost
The command returns the nearest matching structure’s coordinates. Command names and argument suggestions can differ slightly between Java and Bedrock releases, so type /locate structure and use the current client’s autocomplete if the full command is rejected. Cheats change the world’s achievement or trophy status in many configurations; use the command only when that trade-off is acceptable.
Prepare before approaching
Outposts punish a direct sprint across open ground. Prepare for several crossbows firing at once, a fall from the tower and a retreat through unfamiliar terrain.
- Ranged weapon: Bring a bow or crossbow and enough arrows or bolts to kill exposed pillagers before entering the structure.
- Shield: A shield can block incoming crossbow shots while you close a gap or place a block.
- Food: Carry strong, stackable food so you can heal between engagements without leaving the site.
- Building blocks: Bring several stacks of inexpensive solid blocks for cover, stair access, emergency walls and a safe descent.
- Torches or other markers: Mark cleared floors and the route back to your approach point, especially in snow, forest or a cave system.
- Bed or fallback point: Set a respawn point at a secure distance. Do not place it in the line of fire or inside the tower.
- Water bucket: Useful for reducing fall risk, reaching a ledge, putting out fire from unrelated terrain hazards and creating an emergency escape route.
- Armor and spare tools: Check durability before you leave. A broken shield or weapon at the top of the tower can turn a controlled clear into a death loop.
Approach from terrain that lets you break line of sight. A hill, a shallow trench, a tree line or a small covered tunnel is better than walking directly toward the tower across flat ground.

1. Build or find covered approach positions
Stop outside the tower’s immediate firing lanes and create a low, covered position. You only need enough height and width to peek, shoot and retreat. Avoid a tall, open staircase that gives every pillager a clean angle on you. If the tower sits on a slope, use the slope itself as cover and build short walls at the exposed corners.

2. Remove pillagers you can see from range
Use the bow or crossbow from behind cover. Fire, step back behind a block, then heal or reload before exposing yourself again. Do not stand on the open top platform to trade shots; several crossbows can focus that position, and knockback can send you over an edge. If a pillager disappears behind a wall, do not chase it into an unscouted level. Change your angle or move the cover forward one block at a time.
3. Identify and kill the banner captain
The pillager carrying the large ominous banner is the captain. Prioritize it when you can do so without abandoning cover. In current 1.21 mechanics, a captain defeated outside a raid can drop an Ominous Bottle. The Bedrock Edition 1.21 release notes state: “It is no longer given to players that defeat a Raid Captain outside a Raid.” The change means the captain no longer directly applies Bad Omen merely because you killed it; the bottle is an item you can keep, move and use when you choose.
Pick up the bottle only when the surrounding area is controlled. If you die while trying to grab it, the danger of the captain’s position can cost more than the item is worth.

- Open a wall or doorway from the side protected by your cover rather than climbing into the most exposed face.
- Place a block to close an unwanted side angle before moving up the stairs.
- Clear the current level, checking behind stairs, corners and openings before climbing.
- Use your shield while crossing a doorway, then switch to your weapon once the immediate shot is blocked.
- Mark the level as cleared and keep an unobstructed retreat path to the ground.
- Repeat until the upper platform is secure. Do not rush past a surviving pillager on a lower floor; it can shoot you in the back while you fight above.
5. Secure the chest only after the floor is safe
Outpost chests can contain combat supplies such as crossbows, arrows and food. Loot after the floor is clear, not while enemies still have an angle through the doorway. Move valuable items into your inventory before breaking blocks or opening another route, and leave enough space for emergency blocks and food.
6. Search the surrounding generated features
The tower is not the only reason to clear the site. Walk the perimeter from cover and inspect cages, banners, crop patches and nearby wool or other generated blocks. Some outposts contain a cage with an allay; others can contain an iron golem cage. Freeing a trapped allay or golem is optional, but do it only after checking for pillagers around and above the cage. The Sentry armor trim is another reason to search the structure rather than stopping at the first chest.
7. Leave by a controlled route
After the tower and nearby features are clear, descend by stairs or a block-built shaft instead of jumping from the platform. Pillagers may still spawn outside, and the ground around the outpost can contain ravines or hostile mobs. Heal, restock ammunition and establish your next objective before dismantling cover.
Ominous Bottles, Bad Omen and raids
What changed in 1.21
In the 1.21-era system described in Mojang’s 2024 notes, Ominous Bottles are consumed to apply Bad Omen. A bottle provides Bad Omen for 1 hour and 40 minutes, and there are five bottle variations corresponding to the Bad Omen levels. A captain outside a raid can therefore give you a deliberate, portable trigger rather than forcing the effect at the moment of the kill.

How entering a village works
When a player with Bad Omen enters a village, the effect changes into a 30-second Raid Omen. That short countdown is the warning period before a raid begins. If you change your mind, drink milk before the raid starts to remove the effect. Decide where you want the encounter before drinking the bottle: returning to a village immediately after the clear can start the countdown while you are still carrying loot and damaged equipment.
A safe decision sequence
- Finish clearing the outpost and store or secure valuable loot.
- Check armor, shield durability, food and arrows.
- Choose the village and confirm that your route does not pass through an unprepared base.
- Drink the Ominous Bottle only when you are ready to carry Bad Omen.
- Enter the village when your group and defenses are in position.
- If you need to cancel before the raid begins, drink milk during the Raid Omen warning period.
What you can find at an outpost
| Feature or item | What it means for your clear |
|---|---|
| Outpost chest | May provide combat supplies including crossbows, arrows and food. Open it only after securing the floor. |
| Banner captain | Defeating a captain outside a raid can provide an Ominous Bottle under current 1.21 mechanics. |
| Allay cage | Some generated sites include a caged allay. Check the area for defenders before opening it. |
| Iron golem cage | Some sites include a trapped iron golem. Freeing it is optional and should follow a perimeter check. |
| Banners | Decorative outpost banners can mark the structure and serve as a trophy after the area is secure. |
| Crop patches and wool | Generated features that can be harvested after the surrounding pillagers are removed. |
| Sentry armor trim | A possible reason to inspect the outpost’s generated loot and features rather than leaving after the first encounter. |
Loot is not a promise that every outpost contains every listed feature. Treat the chest and generated structures as possibilities, not a guaranteed checklist.
Does destroying the tower stop pillagers from spawning?
No. Removing the visible watchtower does not permanently neutralize an outpost. Java’s documented outpost spawning area is a 72 × 54 × 72 block box centered on the highest watchtower level, and the structure’s destruction does not disable spawning within that area. You can demolish every wooden block and still encounter pillagers around the original spawn volume.
Make the area safe for a base
For a base, identify the wider spawn area rather than concentrating only on the tower footprint. Spawn-proof the relevant ground and platforms with the solid-block, slab or lighting choices supported by the edition and version you play. Remove dark, accessible surfaces and check ledges, roofs, caves and terrain pockets inside the volume. Build a perimeter that keeps new spawns away from doors, paths and storage.
The exact Java dimensions above should not be copied into a Bedrock farm design without testing. Bedrock and Java use different spawning and structure rules, so a design that is safe or productive in one edition may produce unexpected results in the other.

Keep the site as a farm instead
If you want an outpost-based farm, do not destroy or casually spawn-proof the area. Preserve the documented spawn volume, remove competing spawn surfaces according to the farm’s edition-specific plan and follow the design’s AFK distance and collection layout. Exact farm dimensions and rates depend on edition, version and the blocks used; label those variables before building.

Troubleshooting common outpost problems
“I found a village but no outpost.”
That is normal. The structures generate independently. Continue searching compatible terrain or switch to a seed-and-version-matched finder. A village is a navigation point, not a locator.
“Patrols keep appearing, but I cannot find the tower.”
Patrols are not dependable signposts. Follow the structure-finder coordinates or use the locate command rather than triangulating from patrol encounters.
“I killed the captain and received no Bad Omen.”
In the current 1.21 system, the captain outside a raid can drop an Ominous Bottle instead of directly giving Bad Omen. Check the ground and your inventory, then consume the bottle only when you intentionally want the effect.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
“The tower is gone, but pillagers still spawn.”
Demolition does not remove the Java spawn volume. Spawn-proof the broader 72 × 54 × 72 area for a base, or preserve and manage that volume if you are building a farm. In Bedrock, use an edition-specific plan rather than copying Java dimensions.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“I die on the top platform.”
Stop contesting the open roof. Retreat behind a wall, build a covered approach and shoot from a protected angle. Re-enter one level at a time, blocking side angles before climbing. Keep a water bucket or block-built descent ready if knockback threatens to push you over an edge.
“I want the bottle but not a raid yet.”
Store the bottle and avoid entering a village while Bad Omen is active. If you accidentally trigger the 30-second Raid Omen, drink milk before the raid begins to cancel the effect.
A practical clear checklist
- Confirm the world edition, version and dimension.
- Find the outpost by compatible-biome exploration, a matched seed finder or the in-game locate command.
- Set a fallback point away from the tower.
- Bring a bow or crossbow, ammunition, shield, food, blocks, markers and optional water bucket.
- Approach under cover and remove exposed pillagers from range.
- Kill the banner captain without stepping into an open firing lane.
- Clear the tower one level at a time and secure the chest only after each floor is safe.
- Inspect cages, banners, crops, wool and possible Sentry armor trim locations.
- Decide whether to store or consume the Ominous Bottle.
- Afterward, either spawn-proof the wider area for a base or preserve the correct spawn volume for an edition-specific farm.
The safest overall approach
For ordinary survival, the winning sequence is simple: locate the structure accurately, arrive prepared, fight from cover, remove the captain, clear the tower by levels and inspect the perimeter. Treat the Ominous Bottle as a resource you control, not an automatic raid trigger. Finally, decide what “cleared” means for your world: a looted tower, a safe base or a functioning farm each requires a different follow-up, because destroying the wood does not change the underlying spawning area.
