Mojang’s original Minecraft – Pocket Edition was a universal iOS app, but it was a much smaller, Creative-only adaptation than the Minecraft available on mobile today.
When did Minecraft Pocket Edition launch on iOS?
The iPhone and iPad release took place on November 16–17, 2011, depending on region and time zone. MacRumors reported on November 16 that the game would go live worldwide that night and noted that it was already available in New Zealand. Later App Store records commonly identify November 17 as the release date. Some reports appeared on November 18 after the rollout.

The safest description is that Mojang’s official iOS release rolled out across App Store regions between November 16 and 17, 2011. (MacRumors; archival App Store metadata)
It was the official Minecraft, not an App Store clone
The release was Mojang’s official mobile version of Minecraft, arriving as the company expanded the game beyond the PC. It was advertised as a universal app, so one purchase supported compatible iPhone and iPad devices rather than requiring separate phone and tablet editions.
#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
At the time, this distinction mattered. The App Store already contained Minecraft-inspired building games and imitations, but Minecraft – Pocket Edition was the genuine Mojang product. (iMore)
What players could do at launch
The initial release focused on building and experimentation rather than reproducing the full desktop game. Contemporary coverage described these features:
Recommended Free Tools
- Creative Mode: Players could build freely without the resource-gathering and survival systems found in the PC version.
- Randomized worlds: Each generated world provided a different environment to explore and construct in.
- 36 block types: The launch version had a far smaller building palette than desktop Minecraft.
- Local Wi‑Fi multiplayer: Players on the same wireless network could join one another’s worlds.
- Saved multiplayer worlds: A world created during multiplayer could be saved on the device.
- iPhone and iPad support: The universal-app design covered both form factors.
For its time, the combination of randomized worlds, touch controls, and local multiplayer made the release more than a simple static building toy. But its scope was deliberately limited. (iMore; iDownloadBlog)

What was missing from the 2011 version?
The launch build should not be confused with the modern Bedrock Edition app. Contemporary reports described several major omissions:
- No Survival Mode: The first release was Creative-only, with Survival planned for a later update.
- No internet multiplayer: Multiplayer was limited to local Wi‑Fi. It was not the online cross-platform experience available today.
- No animals or creepers: Contemporary coverage specifically identified these as absent.
- A much smaller block selection: The reported total was 36 block types.
- Less precise controls: Touchscreen input could not match the accuracy and speed of a mouse and keyboard for many building tasks.
So the most accurate description of the launch is not “full Minecraft on a phone.” It was an early mobile adaptation centered on Creative building, with local multiplayer and a sharply reduced feature set. (iDownloadBlog)
How much did it cost?
Historical reporting does not agree on one global launch price. Different contemporary sources listed:
Rank #3
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
- $6.99 in iMore’s report;
- $7.99 in MacRumors’ coverage; and
- $9.99 in iDownloadBlog’s report.
The discrepancy may reflect regional pricing, taxes, storefront timing, or a price change around launch, but the supplied archival reports do not establish one definitive explanation. It is therefore more accurate to say that the launch price was reported between $6.99 and $9.99, depending on the source and market, rather than assign one figure to every country.
Pocket Edition expanded after launch
The 2011 app was only the starting point. Later Pocket Edition updates added substantial systems and content. By 2014, coverage highlighted features such as:
- infinite world sizes;
- caves;
- new monsters;
- additional blocks; and
- more locations to explore.
Those additions show why it is misleading to describe the entire Pocket Edition era using the launch feature list. The original release was a limited foundation that grew considerably over subsequent updates. (iDownloadBlog’s later Pocket Edition coverage)

What happened to the Pocket Edition name?
Minecraft’s mobile product eventually became part of the Bedrock Edition ecosystem. In the U.S. App Store, the current iPhone and iPad product uses the same app identifier associated with the original release—479516143—but the software has been extensively updated and rebranded.

The current listing is presented as Minecraft: Play with Friends! in some App Store views and is generally found by searching for Minecraft, not by looking for a separate “Pocket Edition” app. The continuity of the app identifier does not mean the 2011 software remains unchanged; it has evolved into the modern Bedrock mobile client.

The current official iOS app is substantially broader than the 2011 release. Its U.S. App Store listing describes:
Best Value
- Creative and Survival modes;
- infinite randomly generated worlds;
- Bedrock cross-platform multiplayer;
- local-network multiplayer;
- community servers;
- Marketplace content;
- add-ons and resource packs;
- slash commands;
- controller support; and
- Realms and Realms Plus subscriptions.
The U.S. listing showed a price of $6.99 during the August 2026 research period, although App Store prices and product presentation can change by country and over time. The app also includes in-app purchases, particularly for Marketplace content and Realms-related services. (Apple App Store; Minecraft)

Do not confuse it with Minecraft Education
Minecraft Education is a separate product intended for classroom and structured educational use. It is not the standard consumer replacement for the iPhone and iPad Minecraft app and follows different licensing arrangements.
The historical and modern products are very different
| November 2011 Pocket Edition | Current Minecraft on iPhone and iPad | |
|---|---|---|
| Modes | Creative only | Creative and Survival |
| Worlds | Randomized worlds with limited scope | Infinite randomly generated worlds |
| Multiplayer | Local Wi‑Fi only | Local play, cross-platform multiplayer, and servers |
| Content | 36 block types; no animals or creepers reported at launch | Modern Bedrock content, Marketplace items, add-ons, and resource packs |
| Controls | Touch controls | Touch and controller support |
| Identity | Minecraft – Pocket Edition | Modern Minecraft Bedrock mobile app |
Bottom line
The 2011 headline was genuine: official Minecraft became available for iPhone and iPad in November 2011 as a universal app. However, the launch version was a limited, Creative-focused mobile adaptation with 36 blocks and local Wi‑Fi multiplayer—not the Survival, server, Marketplace, and cross-platform Bedrock experience available today.
If you are looking for Minecraft on an iPhone or iPad now, search for the official Minecraft App Store listing. “Pocket Edition” is the historical name for the early mobile product, not the current U.S. App Store branding.
