The ingredient determines the potion’s purpose; Redstone Dust, Glowstone Dust, Gunpowder, Dragon’s Breath, and Fermented Spider Eye alter duration, potency, delivery, or effect type. This guide lists every recipe covered by the current 1.21-era system, explains the four new 1.21 effects, and shows how to choose potions for combat, travel, exploration, and utility.

The core brewing method
A Brewing Stand is the workstation for combining water bottles and ingredients. Most useful effects begin with the same two-stage process:
- Place water bottles in the Brewing Stand.
- Add Nether Wart. Each water bottle becomes an Awkward Potion.
- Use the effect ingredient for the result you want.
- Optionally modify the finished potion with Redstone Dust, Glowstone Dust, Gunpowder, or Dragon’s Breath.
Nether Wart is therefore the central ingredient in the system. It does not create a useful effect by itself; it converts a water bottle into the base potion used by nearly every effect recipe. Weakness is the important exception: it starts with a plain Water Bottle rather than an Awkward Potion.
#1 Best Overall
What to put beside the stand
- Water Bottles for the starting containers.
- Nether Wart for Awkward Potions.
- The effect ingredient listed in the recipe table.
- Optional Redstone Dust for a longer duration when that potion supports one.
- Optional Glowstone Dust for a stronger tier when that effect has one.
- Gunpowder when you need a throwable Splash Potion.
- Dragon’s Breath when you need a Lingering Potion made from a Splash Potion.
Brewing several bottles at once is efficient because the stand processes the three bottle slots together when the ingredients are shared. Keep the intended branch in mind before inserting a modifier: duration and potency upgrades are normally separate outcomes, so adding one does not automatically provide the other.
Every Minecraft potion recipe and effect
The table uses “Awkward” as shorthand for an Awkward Potion made from a Water Bottle and Nether Wart. Recipes that begin with another potion are corruption or conversion paths rather than direct Nether Wart recipes.

How to choose a potion by purpose
Combat and emergency healing
Healing is the immediate-response option when health has already dropped. Regeneration is better suited to damage that continues over time because it restores health gradually. Strength belongs in melee encounters where increased attack damage matters. Poison applies periodic damage and normally cannot finish a target by itself because it leaves the target at one health; plan a follow-up attack or another source of damage.
Turtle Master trades mobility for heavy protection. Its severe slowness makes it a deliberate defensive choice rather than a general travel buff. Harming is the direct offensive conversion of Healing or Poison and is useful when instant damage is more valuable than a damage-over-time effect.
Travel and movement
Swiftness is the straightforward movement choice for long corridors, escapes, and ordinary overland travel. Leaping helps when vertical movement and jump height are the bottleneck, but its benefit is situational compared with a speed increase. Slowness is the corresponding hindrance effect and is produced by corrupting Swiftness or Leaping with Fermented Spider Eye.
Slow Falling is the safety potion for cliffs, towers, ravines, and other situations in which a missed landing would be fatal. It slows descent and prevents fall damage, so it protects against a different threat than Fire Resistance rather than replacing it.

Exploration and environmental hazards
Fire Resistance is the priority for lava-heavy areas and any expedition where fire damage is the main risk. Water Breathing is the preparation step for underwater ruins, ocean travel, and submerged building. Night Vision improves visibility in darkness, which makes underground and nighttime work easier without changing movement speed or damage.
Invisibility removes the player’s visible model, but it is not perfect concealment: worn armor and held items can still reveal the player. Treat it as a stealth aid, not a guarantee that nearby entities or players cannot detect you.
Utility and unusual encounters
Weakness has a practical role beyond combat because it is used when curing zombie villagers. Since it begins with a Water Bottle and Fermented Spider Eye, do not waste Nether Wart when your goal is specifically Weakness. The four 1.21 effects—Oozing, Infestation, Weaving, and Wind Charged—are encounter-focused effects whose value depends on the behavior they trigger around affected entities rather than on a conventional player buff.
Ingredient planning and practical rarity
Not all recipes have the same preparation burden. Sugar is usually an easy early movement ingredient, while ingredients tied to specific creatures or structures require more deliberate farming or exploration. Use the following planning tiers as a practical checklist rather than an absolute spawn-rate ranking:
| Planning tier | Examples | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Easy to stock for routine brewing | Sugar, Spider Eye, Blaze Powder | These support Swiftness, Poison, and Strength and are useful for repeated combat or travel runs. |
| Targeted collection | Glistering Melon Slice, Magma Cream, Pufferfish, Golden Carrot | These enable emergency healing, fire protection, underwater breathing, and dark-area visibility; gather them before a specialized expedition. |
| Situational or less convenient | Rabbit’s Foot, Ghast Tear, Phantom Membrane, Turtle Shell | Leaping, Regeneration, Slow Falling, and Turtle Master are powerful or distinctive, but their ingredients are less convenient to replace on demand. |
| 1.21-specific preparation | Slime Block, Stone Block, Cobweb, Breeze Rod | These four ingredients unlock Oozing, Infestation, Weaving, and Wind Charged. |
When storage is limited, stock the potion whose failure cost is highest for the next activity. A Nether expedition favors Fire Resistance; a deep-ocean trip favors Water Breathing and Night Vision; a high-altitude build favors Slow Falling; a planned melee fight favors Strength and Healing or Regeneration.
Duration, potency, and delivery modifiers
Redstone Dust: duration branch
Adding Redstone Dust extends the duration of potions that support a longer version. This is the planning choice for journeys, mining sessions, patrols, or any activity where returning to the stand is inconvenient. The exact extension depends on the potion and edition, so check the in-game tooltip for the world you are playing.
Rank #3
Glowstone Dust: potency branch
Glowstone Dust increases potency when a stronger tier exists. Choose it for a short, high-impact encounter rather than assuming that every potion benefits in the same way. Duration and potency are normally separate branches; decide whether time or intensity matters before adding the modifier.
Gunpowder: Splash delivery
Gunpowder converts a drinkable potion into a Splash Potion. The effect can then be thrown instead of consumed, which is useful when you must keep moving, affect another entity, or apply a harmful effect without standing still to drink.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Dragon’s Breath: Lingering delivery
Dragon’s Breath upgrades a Splash Potion into a Lingering Potion. Lingering delivery leaves the effect in an area, making it the better format when several entities need to pass through the same spot or when you want a persistent zone rather than a single impact.
Fermented Spider Eye: corruption paths
Fermented Spider Eye changes compatible effects instead of merely extending or strengthening them. It converts Night Vision to Invisibility, Swiftness or Leaping to Slowness, and Healing or Poison to Harming. A plain Water Bottle plus Fermented Spider Eye creates Weakness, which is why Weakness does not follow the normal Awkward-Potion opening.
Drinkable, splash, or lingering: selecting the delivery form
| Form | Best use | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Drinkable Potion | Self-buffs during a safe preparation window | Requires time and a free action to consume |
| Splash Potion | Fast application to yourself or nearby entities; practical for combat and shared effects | Requires Gunpowder and careful throwing distance |
| Lingering Potion | Creates an area that can affect entities passing through it | Requires a Splash Potion plus Dragon’s Breath and rewards deliberate placement |
The 1.21 effects can also be used in splash and lingering forms, as well as on tipped arrows, according to the official Minecraft 1.21 release documentation. That makes the new effects useful for encounter design and ranged delivery rather than limiting them to self-drinking.
The four new 1.21 potion effects
Oozing
Oozing is brewed with an Awkward Potion and a Slime Block. When its conditions are met, an affected mob spawns slimes on death. It is therefore an effect that changes what happens at the end of an encounter, not a conventional movement or defense buff.
Rank #4
Infestation
Infestation uses an Awkward Potion and a Stone Block. An affected entity has a chance to spawn silverfish when hurt. The chance-based behavior makes it different from a guaranteed direct-damage effect: repeated hits can create additional threats, so use it with a plan for the resulting silverfish.
Weaving
Weaving combines an Awkward Potion with a Cobweb. It causes cobweb-related area behavior on affected entities. Its value is tactical control and encounter shaping, especially where slowing or obstructing movement changes how a group approaches.
Wind Charged
Wind Charged requires an Awkward Potion and a Breeze Rod. When an affected entity dies, the effect creates a wind-burst behavior. This death-triggered result makes timing important: the potion’s payoff occurs at the end of the affected entity’s life rather than immediately on application.
A best-first brewing plan
If you are establishing a first serious potion chest, prioritize by the hazards you actually face:
- Fire Resistance: first choice for lava routes, Nether travel, and fire-prone builds.
- Swiftness: the most generally useful movement option for travel and retreats.
- Strength: prepare it before a melee-heavy expedition or planned fight.
- Water Breathing: essential when the objective is below the surface.
- Night Vision: improves dark-area visibility during mining and exploration.
- Slow Falling: protects builders and explorers working above dangerous drops.
Add Healing or Regeneration when surviving damage is more important than speed, and keep Weakness available if curing zombie villagers is part of your settlement plan. Build the specialized 1.21 effects after you have a clear encounter or farm that benefits from their triggered behavior.
Step-by-step brewing workflow
- Sort by objective. Decide whether the session is for combat, travel, underwater work, darkness, vertical construction, or a 1.21 encounter.
- Prepare the base. Put Water Bottles in the Brewing Stand and brew Nether Wart to make Awkward Potions. For Weakness, skip Nether Wart and use the Water Bottle plus Fermented Spider Eye path.
- Add one effect ingredient. Match the ingredient to the exact result in the recipe table. Do not add a modifier before the base effect is complete.
- Select duration or potency. Use Redstone Dust when staying power matters and Glowstone Dust when a stronger tier matters. These are normally separate branches.
- Select delivery. Leave the potion drinkable for personal preparation, add Gunpowder for Splash delivery, or add Dragon’s Breath to a Splash Potion for Lingering delivery.
- Label storage. Separate self-buffs, harmful effects, and 1.21 encounter effects so a hurried selection does not turn into the wrong throw.
Troubleshooting common brewing mistakes
The result is still an Awkward Potion
Check that the effect ingredient, rather than another Nether Wart, was inserted after the base was made. Nether Wart only establishes the Awkward stage.
Best Value
Weakness will not brew from an Awkward Potion
That is expected. Weakness is the exception that starts with a plain Water Bottle and Fermented Spider Eye.
The potion is the wrong effect
Fermented Spider Eye is a conversion ingredient, so verify the starting potion. Night Vision converts to Invisibility; Swiftness or Leaping converts to Slowness; Healing or Poison converts to Harming.
The potion lasts longer but is not stronger
Redstone targets duration. If the effect has a stronger tier and you need intensity instead, brew the base potion again and use Glowstone Dust as the potency branch.
The potion cannot be thrown
Gunpowder is required to turn a drinkable potion into a Splash Potion. Dragon’s Breath only applies after the Splash Potion stage when you want a Lingering Potion.
A recipe or timing differs from a guide you remember
Check the edition and version first. Java and Bedrock can differ in exact durations and some obtainability rules, and newer Java releases describe brewing recipes as data-driven. A data pack can therefore add or modify recipes, making a custom world behave differently from an unmodified game.

Edition and version notes
Java 1.21 introduced Oozing, Infestation, Weaving, and Wind Charged. The official 1.21 release documentation also identifies splash potions, lingering potions, and tipped arrows as delivery forms for these effects. Quote a duration only with its Java or Bedrock edition and version beside it; a number copied from one edition should not be presented as universal.
Java’s newer releases describe potion recipes as data-driven. In practical terms, data packs can add or modify brewing recipes, so a server or single-player world with custom data may not match the default table. When troubleshooting, test in the world’s actual edition, version, and data-pack configuration before replacing ingredients or assuming the stand is malfunctioning.
