For large quantities of ordinary sand, go to a desert; for a quick early-game supply, check a beach, riverbank, or pond edge. Ocean floors in warm, lukewarm, and deep-lukewarm oceans are another source. Bring a shovel, mine from the side rather than underneath a column, and remember that sand falls when unsupported. Smelt it into glass, craft it into sandstone, combine it with gravel and dye for concrete powder, or use it with gunpowder for TNT. Red sand is found in badlands and cannot replace ordinary sand in the concrete-powder recipe.

Where to find sand in Minecraft
Sand is a common Overworld block, but the best location depends on how much you need and how safely you want to gather it. Mojang’s biome guide describes a desert as “A large biome with sand, sandstone, cacti, and the occasional fossil.” That makes deserts the most dependable destination for a large mining trip.

Deserts usually expose broad, continuous deposits of regular sand. You can collect stacks quickly without repeatedly relocating, and the surface is easier to read than a submerged deposit. Watch for cacti, ravines, hostile mobs at night, and sudden drops while crossing the biome. Deserts also contain sandstone beneath or around the sand, so a desert expedition can supply both raw sand and ready-made building blocks.
Beaches, rivers, and ponds: convenient early-game deposits
Beaches are often the first practical source after leaving a spawn area. River and pond edges also provide sand in smaller patches. These deposits are useful when you need a few stacks for a first house, furnace windows, or a small concrete project and do not want to travel to a desert. Their main limitation is quantity: shoreline deposits can run out quickly or be interrupted by dirt, gravel, stone, and water.

Ocean floors: large deposits with extra risk
Sand generates in layers on the floors of warm, lukewarm, and deep-lukewarm oceans. Ocean mining can expose substantial deposits, but breathing time, visibility, drowned, and the difficulty of collecting falling blocks make it less forgiving than surface mining. Treat this as a planned operation rather than the fastest first option.
Badlands: the source of red sand
Badlands contain red sand instead of the ordinary variety in many exposed areas. Mojang describes this variant as acting like regular sand except that it cannot be used to make concrete. Red sand is therefore useful for color-specific construction and red sandstone, but it is not a substitute when a recipe specifically calls for sand.

If your destination is chosen only by quantity, a desert normally wins. If travel time is the deciding factor, take the nearest beach, river, or pond. Choose an ocean floor when the deposit is convenient and you already have a safe way to work underwater. Choose badlands only when you specifically want the red variant.
How to collect sand quickly and safely
Use a shovel
Sand can be broken with any tool, or by hand, but a shovel is the practical fast choice. Keep the shovel in your hotbar and carry a spare if you are clearing a large desert. The shovel’s material changes durability and speed, not the basic collection rule: breaking the block drops sand that can be picked up normally.

Mine from the side, not underneath
Sand is affected by gravity. When a sand block loses support, it becomes a falling-block entity and drops until it lands on a supporting block. Digging straight down through a tall column can therefore release the blocks above you. Standing under an unsupported overhang can bury or trap your character and can also make drops difficult to collect.
- Stand beside the deposit instead of directly below it.
- Remove the lowest exposed block from the side, then work upward or inward.
- Pause when you see a column or ceiling begin to lose support.
- Step clear of the fall and collect the blocks after they land.
- Before leaving, check ledges and cavities where sand may have settled.
This method is slower than blindly digging downward for a moment, but it avoids the most common sand-mining accident: triggering a collapse while your character occupies the space below it.

Collecting underwater
Ocean-floor sand is subject to the same gravity behavior. Clear a manageable section, keep an exit route to the surface, and do not remove blocks beneath a large unsupported shelf while you are standing in the fall path. Because water can carry or obscure dropped items, finish one small area before moving to the next rather than opening a huge wall at once.
Transport and site management
Sand is plentiful but heavy in inventory terms. Bring enough empty slots for the trip, mark the route to a remote desert, and establish a chest or temporary storage point before stripping a large area. Removing every block from a beach can also create an unattractive shoreline or expose neighboring terrain, so leave a stable edge when the landscape matters to your build.

What you can make with sand
Sand is both a raw building block and a component for progression items. The most useful choice depends on whether you need transparent blocks, a structural palette, colored concrete, or an explosive utility item.
Glass: smelt sand in a furnace
Place sand in a furnace input slot and fuel in the fuel slot. Each smelted sand block produces glass. Glass is used for windows, bottles, beacons, and many decorative builds, making a furnace the usual first major conversion for a new supply of sand.

- Open a furnace.
- Put regular sand, or the sand variant you intend to process, in the upper input slot.
- Add a fuel source to the lower slot.
- Wait for smelting to finish and move the glass to your inventory.
Smelt only the amount you need if you are still short on fuel. Raw sand is immediately useful for terrain work and other recipes, while glass cannot be turned back into sand.
Sandstone: a desert building material
Craft sand into sandstone for walls, floors, arches, towers, and other desert-themed construction. Sandstone gives you a solid block palette without requiring a furnace. Ordinary sand produces ordinary sandstone; red sand is used for the red-sandstone palette. Because the conversion is a building choice rather than a temporary storage trick, reserve enough raw sand for glass and concrete before converting a large stock.

Concrete powder and concrete
Concrete powder combines sand, gravel, and a dye. Water then converts the powder into concrete, producing one of the cleanest solid color palettes for modern builds, roads, interiors, and large pixel-art surfaces.
- Gather regular sand, gravel, and the dye color you want.
- Use the crafting grid to combine them into the matching colored concrete powder.
- Place the powder next to or in contact with water so it hardens into concrete.
- Mine the finished concrete with a pickaxe if you need to move it.
The standard recipe requires ordinary sand. Red sand does not substitute for it, even though red sand otherwise behaves similarly as a falling block and building resource. If you are in a badlands biome and your goal is concrete, keep searching for regular sand rather than filling the recipe with red sand.
TNT
Sand is one of TNT’s ingredients alongside gunpowder. TNT can be used for controlled excavation, traps, minigames, or other planned utility builds. Handle it deliberately: place it only where an explosion is acceptable, keep valuable storage and redstone away from accidental ignition, and prepare a safe activation method before lighting it.
Direct decoration and environmental work
Raw sand has uses that do not involve crafting. It can create beaches, desert scenery, dunes, paths, artificial shorelines, and falling-block contraptions. It is also useful for covering or restoring terrain around buried-treasure locations and for temporarily filling water while building. These applications are often more reversible than smelting or crafting, so keep a reserve of raw blocks when you expect to reshape a landscape later.

The practical rule is simple: use red sand when color or red sandstone matters; use regular sand when a recipe calls for sand and especially when you are making concrete powder. Keep the two types in separate storage if you are managing a large building project so a visually similar block does not cause a failed recipe later.

“I cannot find enough sand near my base.”
Search in widening circles for a beach, river, or pond first. If the deposits are too small, travel to a desert and bring a shovel. Ocean floors can work as a third option when a warm, lukewarm, or deep-lukewarm ocean is closer than a desert and you can gather safely underwater.
“Sand fell into a hole or disappeared from the wall.”
That is the gravity mechanic, not a different block type. Remove sand from the side, avoid standing below unsupported blocks, and collect each fallen section before opening another section. Check the bottom of nearby cavities for dropped items or newly settled sand.
“My concrete recipe will not accept this sand.”
Check the block’s name. Concrete powder requires regular sand; red sand from badlands is excluded. Replace it with ordinary sand from a desert, beach, river, pond, or suitable ocean floor.
“I ran out of sand after making glass.”
Glass is not reversible, so plan the conversion before smelting a whole chest. Keep one stockpile of raw sand for concrete powder, sandstone, terrain work, and TNT, and smelt only the amount needed for the current build.

Recipe displays and world-generation details can vary between Java and Bedrock releases. The locations and mechanics described here reflect modern Overworld gameplay, but the exact appearance of a deposit, biome label, or crafting interface can differ by edition and version. When documenting a build or following a screenshot, confirm whether it was made in Java or Bedrock and note the game version. If a recipe grid behaves differently from the one described, check the in-game recipe book for that release rather than assuming a missing ingredient is a bug.
