Start with the error message, not a guess
A window that flashes and closes does not identify the problem; it only means you did not get to see the process’s output. Do not start by changing router settings, reinstalling Minecraft, or editing configuration files. First run the JAR in a terminal and capture the complete message, including any lines immediately before the final error.

- Open Command Prompt or PowerShell on Windows, or a terminal on macOS or Linux.
- Change to the folder containing the server JAR. In Windows, Minecraft Help gives this example:
cd C:UsersAdminDesktopMinecraft Server. Because the folder name contains a space, keep the path in quotation marks if your shell requires it:cd "C:UsersAdminDesktopMinecraft Server". - Check the exact name of the downloaded file. On Windows, enter
dir; on macOS or Linux, enterls. Use the JAR filename as it appears in the listing rather than assuming it is calledserver.jar. - Check which Java installation the terminal will use by running
java -version. - Launch the JAR using its full filename, for example
java -jar "server-1.x.x.jar". Replace the example with the actual name. Addnoguionly if you want the console-only mode described on Minecraft’s official server-download page.
Keep the terminal open while diagnosing. Its output distinguishes a failure to find the JAR from a Java compatibility problem or an expected first-run setup stop. Minecraft’s official download page says Java Edition requires a compatible Java Runtime Environment to launch the server JAR; having some Java installation is not by itself proof that the terminal is using the right one.
Match the message to the failure
| Message or symptom | What it points to | First action |
|---|---|---|
Unable to access jarfile |
The path or filename in the command does not identify a readable JAR. | Check the current folder and copy the exact filename. |
UnsupportedClassVersionError or “compiled by a more recent version” |
The selected Java runtime is older than the class-file level used to compile the server. | Use a Java runtime compatible with that server release. |
You need to agree to the EULA or Failed to load eula.txt |
The server has not found an accepted EULA file in its working directory. | Complete the first-run EULA step in the server folder. |
Failed to load properties |
On the first run, the settings file may not have been generated yet; later, it may be unreadable or malformed. | Determine whether this is the first launch, then check server.properties. |
| Stops while extracting libraries or creating files | The process may be unable to write to its working directory or complete file creation. | Inspect the final terminal line, the folder’s write access, and available disk space. |
| Window disappears without a visible message | The error is hidden because the process was started by double-clicking. | Launch from a terminal and capture the full output. |
Use the most specific message shown. In particular, do not treat every startup failure as a Java problem: a correct runtime cannot compensate for a misspelled JAR path, and changing the EULA does not repair either of those issues.

Fix “Unable to access jarfile”
This message means Java could not open the path it was given. It is a file-location or filename problem, not evidence that the server itself is incompatible or corrupt. Check the command’s filename character by character against the folder listing, including its extension.
Check the working folder
The working folder is the directory the process uses when it starts. If the terminal is somewhere else, a command using only a filename will look in the wrong place. Change into the server directory before launching. If the path includes spaces, quote the path in the cd command. Alternatively, use a quoted absolute path to the JAR, taking care to quote the entire path and filename.
Use the real filename
Downloaded server files may have versioned names. If the file listing shows minecraft_server.example.jar, typing java -jar server.jar asks Java to open a different file. Copy the listed name into the command, preserving the .jar extension. Check that the file was not renamed with an additional extension, such as .jar.jar, or saved with a different extension by the browser or operating system.
On a case-sensitive filesystem, capitalization must also match. If you moved the JAR after downloading it, update the folder path or move it back. Avoid guessing at a fix until the terminal command points to the file that actually exists.

Fix a Java class-version error
UnsupportedClassVersionError, or wording that says a class was “compiled by a more recent version,” means the Java runtime selected for the launch cannot understand the class-file version used by the JAR. Mojang’s issue record illustrates this diagnostic pattern: the error identifies a newer compiled version and the maximum class-file version the current runtime recognizes.
- Read the error to confirm that it is a class-version mismatch, rather than a missing-file or EULA message.
- Check
java -versionin the same terminal you use to start the server. That shows the Java executable resolved for that command, not necessarily every Java version installed on the computer. - Install or select a Java runtime compatible with the Minecraft server release you are running. Do not assume the newest available Java is the right choice for every older server release; compatibility depends on the server version.
- If more than one Java installation is present, invoke the intended Java executable explicitly or correct the system’s PATH so that
javaresolves to the intended installation. - Run
java -versionagain in that terminal, then retry the launch command.
Editing server.properties cannot change which Java runtime loads the server classes. Likewise, accepting the EULA will not resolve a class-version mismatch. Keep the remedy tied to the error actually printed.

Complete the first-run EULA setup
On its first launch, the server may print failed to load properties and failed to load eula.txt, then stop. Minecraft Help describes this as part of setup: the launch creates files, and the server waits for the EULA setting before it proceeds. That stop is different from a Java crash.
- Run the JAR once from the intended server folder and let the first-run output finish.
- Open the generated
eula.txtin a plain-text editor and review the EULA before agreeing. - If you agree, change
eula=falsetoeula=true, then save the file in that same server folder. Minecraft Help’s setup instructions specifically tell users to make this change and save. - Run the same Java command again from the same folder. The server should be able to pass the EULA gate and continue startup.
If it still says the EULA has not been accepted, check the file’s exact name and location. On Windows, extensions can be hidden, so a file displayed as eula.txt may actually be named eula.txt.txt. Also confirm that the saved line reads eula=true, not a variation with a typo, and that the JAR process is using the directory where you edited the file. A startup script can have a different working directory from the folder in which the script itself is stored; set its working directory deliberately or use the correct absolute folder path.

Repair settings and “Failed to load properties”
The server creates server.properties as part of setup. If the message appears on a first launch, the file may simply not exist yet. After the server has generated it, an error or unexpected reset points instead to whether the file can be read and parsed.
- Open the file in a plain-text editor and keep one
key=valuesetting per line. - Check for accidental formatting introduced by a rich-text editor, stray characters, or edits that joined multiple settings onto one line.
- Confirm the file is readable by the account running the server and remains in the server’s working folder.
- If a malformed edit prevents parsing, restore a known-good backup or regenerate a clean configuration file, then reapply settings carefully.
A clean configuration is a recovery step, not a reason to discard settings without a backup. Keep a copy before replacing the file so you can recover values you want to preserve. Do not use the EULA file as a substitute for configuration repair: the two files have separate purposes.

Resolve file-creation and library-extraction failures
If startup stops while extracting libraries or creating server files, inspect the last terminal or log line to see which operation failed. Mojang’s notes for Minecraft 1.18 explain that the bundled server unpacks libraries at startup into bundlerRepoDir, which defaults to the working directory. That makes the launch folder relevant even when the JAR itself is present and Java starts correctly.
Check the folder and storage
- Use a dedicated server folder that the account running the process can write to. A protected operating-system directory or a read-only location can block file creation.
- Check that the drive has free space. A process that cannot finish writing files may stop before reaching a listening state.
- Review whether the folder or its parent has read-only permissions. Change permissions only after identifying the affected path and confirming that a write restriction is the issue.
Check security and sync interference
Antivirus or endpoint-security software can quarantine or block files; cloud-sync tools can also create conflicts while the server is writing. Look for a relevant quarantine or sync event at the time of the failed launch. Do not broadly disable security protections as a first step. If a security tool did block a specific server file, use its documented review and restore process only when you trust that file.

These checks apply to file-writing failures. They do not fix a class-version error or an incorrect JAR filename, so return to the exact terminal message if changing folders or permissions makes no difference.
Make startup output stay visible
Double-clicking a JAR can open a window that closes as soon as the process exits. The result hides the evidence needed to tell whether the server failed, stopped for setup, or completed startup. Launching from a terminal is the simplest way to keep the output available for inspection.
If you use a startup script instead, make sure it starts Java with the correct JAR filename and working directory. A script that runs from a different directory may not find the EULA, settings file, or extracted libraries even when those files exist next to the JAR. Keep the terminal window open after starting the script so the complete output remains visible. When asking for help, include the first relevant error and the lines immediately around it, while removing any private information from paths or logs.
Tell a startup failure from a connection problem
Port forwarding cannot fix a JAR that exits before the server finishes startup. First confirm in the server console that it has reached a listening state. Only after that should you investigate whether players can connect.

Minecraft’s official pages identify 25565 as the default Java server port and explain that firewall or router configuration may be needed for players connecting from outside the local network. Test from the host or another device on the same local network first. If local connections work but players outside the network cannot connect, check the host firewall and router configuration for the required port. Open only what the server needs rather than changing unrelated firewall settings.

Choose the next step based on what failed
Most local startup failures are repairable without changing how the server is hosted. A practical order is to verify the Java executable and exact JAR path, complete first-run setup, then investigate file access and configuration based on the terminal output. This order avoids spending time on network changes when the process never started.
Self-hosting gives you control over the Java runtime, server files, configuration, and network setup, but you are responsible for maintaining those pieces. Managed hosting is a separate option for someone who does not want to maintain Java, files, or router settings; it is not a remedy for an incorrectly named JAR on a local computer. Decide between those approaches based on whether you want to administer the server environment, rather than treating hosting as the first troubleshooting step.
When the server still will not start
After checking the error-specific fix, perform one controlled retry rather than changing several settings at once. Record the command you ran, the result of java -version, the exact JAR filename, the folder from which you launched it, and the complete relevant error output. Those details help separate a runtime mismatch from a working-directory or file-permission problem.
- If the error still names a missing JAR, recheck the path and filename in the command.
- If it still reports a newer class version, verify which Java executable the terminal resolves and match it to the server release.
- If the EULA is rejected, confirm the accepted file is in the process’s working directory and has the exact expected name.
- If file creation fails, identify the path named in the output and check its write access, security events, sync activity, and available space.
- If the console reaches a listening state, stop troubleshooting startup and investigate connectivity separately.
Changing one relevant item per retry preserves a clear cause-and-effect trail. If you cannot identify the problem from the output, share the precise message and the checks above with a support forum or administrator; a screenshot of a disappearing window is less useful than the text from the terminal.
