There is no single RAM number that fits every Minecraft server. Use the edition, server software, maximum simultaneous players, world activity, mods or add-ons, and the other work your machine performs to estimate a sensible allocation. Mojang lists 4 GB of RAM in the Bedrock Dedicated Server system-requirements block, while the same page says at least 1 GB can be considered for a small server. Those figures are different reference points, not a contradiction: 1 GB is a small-server minimum consideration, whereas 4 GB is the published system-requirements figure.

For Java Edition, Mojang documents the required Java runtime and networking setup but does not publish an official RAM-per-player formula. Treat every calculator as a workload estimate, leave room for the operating system and backups, then confirm the decision with memory and tick-lag measurements after players begin exploring the world.

Quick RAM guide by server workload

The table below is a practical starting point for planning, not a Mojang guarantee. “Allocated RAM” means the memory given to the Minecraft process; the computer needs additional physical RAM for the operating system, file cache, monitoring, backups and any other applications.

Workload Planning allocation Suggested total machine memory What can change the result
Bedrock small test server 1 GB is the minimum consideration stated in Mojang’s FAQ More than the allocation; 4 GB is the published Bedrock requirement World size, add-ons, exploration and background services
2–4 players, vanilla Java or Bedrock 2–4 GB as a starting estimate At least 4–8 GB View distance, frequent chunk generation and farms with many entities
5–10 players, vanilla with active exploration 4–6 GB 8–12 GB Several players loading new terrain simultaneously can raise usage quickly
10–20 players with plugins or light mods 6–8 GB 12–16 GB Mod packs, plugin memory leaks, map size and scheduled tasks
20 or more players, heavy modded or highly active world 8–12 GB or more 16 GB or more Mod requirements and CPU limits often become as important as RAM

The first two rows need particular care. The Bedrock Dedicated Server page presents both the 1 GB small-server guidance and the 4 GB system-requirements figure. A Java server has no equivalent official number, so the Java estimates are deliberately workload-based rather than an alleged per-player rule.

Why player count alone cannot calculate RAM

Two servers with ten players can use very different amounts of memory. A group standing in one established area is cheaper than ten players flying in different directions and generating thousands of new chunks. A quiet vanilla world may use less memory than a smaller server running a large mod pack, a map renderer and several automation plugins.

Edition and server software

Java Edition and Bedrock Edition use different server programs and runtimes. Java requires a compatible Java runtime; Bedrock has its own dedicated-server package and supported operating-system requirements. Plugins, Forge- or Fabric-style mods, datapacks and Bedrock add-ons each add their own memory footprint. Confirm that the software you intend to run is supported before choosing a plan.

World activity

  • Exploration: New chunks must be generated, loaded and saved. Multiple players exploring in separate directions create more simultaneous work than players staying together.
  • Simulation: Villagers, redstone machines, mobs, item piles and farms keep chunks active. Entity-heavy areas can produce lag even when the memory graph looks acceptable.
  • World history: A large explored world needs storage and backup capacity. Its disk size is not the same as its live RAM requirement, but backup jobs and map tools still compete for machine resources.
  • Extra services: Voice chat, a web map, monitoring, databases, game panels and scheduled backups all need memory outside the Minecraft allocation.

How to use a Minecraft RAM calculator

Use this process whenever you start a server or change its player target. It produces a defensible estimate without pretending that a fixed multiplier works for every world.

  1. Choose the edition and software. Record Java or Bedrock, then list the server implementation, plugins, mods, datapacks or add-ons. A “vanilla” label is only useful if it also states the edition and software version.
  2. Set the real concurrency target. Use the maximum number of players likely to be online together, not the number of people on a chat list. If a weekend event can double the normal population, calculate for that event or plan an upgrade path.
  3. Classify exploration and simulation. Mark the world as mostly stationary, moderately exploratory or continuously generating new terrain. Note heavy farms, villager halls, mob grinders and redstone areas because they increase tick and entity work.
  4. Add software overhead. Start with the allocation range in the table, then increase it for large mod packs, plugins that retain data, server-side maps or multiple worlds. Do not add RAM simply because a launcher recommends a large number; check the mod pack’s documented requirement and actual usage.
  5. Reserve host headroom. Subtract memory for the operating system, panel, backups and other services before setting -Xmx for Java or the equivalent Bedrock process limit. On a shared desktop, leave more room than on a minimal, dedicated server installation.
  6. Measure under the worst normal load. Watch resident memory, swap activity, tick time and player-facing lag during exploration and peak concurrency. Increase memory when the process is repeatedly constrained and the machine still has CPU and storage capacity; investigate CPU, disk or entity problems when RAM is not the bottleneck.

A simple planning formula

Physical RAM required = Minecraft allocation + operating-system reserve + other services + safety margin. For example, giving a Java process 4 GB on an 8 GB machine leaves roughly 4 GB for everything else; that may be comfortable for a dedicated, lightweight installation but tight on a desktop running a browser, backups and a panel. Increasing the allocation until the host starts swapping can make pauses worse, not better.

Java Edition: requirements and memory settings

The official Java server page states, “Please note: This server setup is only compatible with Minecraft: Java Edition.” It also warns, “If you want to run a Minecraft multiplayer server by yourself things get kind of involved.” In practice, install the Java runtime compatible with the server release, download the official server files, accept the server’s EULA when prompted, and configure firewall and port rules if players connect from outside your home network.

Setting an initial allocation

A common launch pattern is:

java -Xms4G -Xmx4G -jar server.jar nogui

Replace 4G with the allocation your calculation supports and replace server.jar with the actual file name. Keeping -Xms and -Xmx equal avoids repeated heap resizing, but it does not create RAM that the machine does not physically have. If the computer also hosts backups or other games, lower the heap or move those services elsewhere.

What Java RAM cannot fix

  • A slow or saturated CPU can limit ticks while free RAM remains.
  • Disk contention from world saves or backups can cause pauses that look like memory trouble.
  • A plugin or mod leak may cause usage to climb continually; adding RAM delays the failure but does not repair the leak.
  • Excessive view or simulation distance increases chunk and entity work and may require configuration changes as well as memory.

Bedrock Dedicated Server: understanding the 1 GB and 4 GB figures

Mojang’s current Bedrock documentation lists 4 GB RAM in the system-requirements block. Its FAQ separately says at least 1 GB of RAM for small servers and adds: “For larger worlds or more players, additional memory, storage, and processing power are recommended.” Read together, the page gives a lower bound for a small, lightly loaded server and a formal requirement figure for the dedicated-server package; neither is a universal per-player calculator.

Bedrock Dedicated Server supports Windows and Ubuntu Linux in the documented setup. When remote players connect, check your firewall and router rules; the default ports identified in Microsoft’s Bedrock documentation are 19132 and 19133. Reserve physical memory for the host operating system and any management or backup tools just as you would for Java.

Self-hosting checklist

  1. Verify hardware compatibility. Before buying a 4GB DDR4 RAM module or another server-RAM upgrade, check the motherboard’s supported DDR generation, DIMM or SODIMM form factor, maximum capacity, speed limits and ECC requirements. A module that fits physically may still be electrically incompatible.
  2. Install the correct operating-system software. Use a supported Windows or Ubuntu Linux environment for Bedrock. For Java, install the runtime required by your chosen server release.
  3. Download the official server package. Keep the server files in a dedicated directory so worlds, logs and backups can be managed separately.
  4. Configure access safely. Open only the required firewall rule and forward the server port only when outside players need access. Use allowlists and strong administrative credentials.
  5. Automate backups. Store at least one copy away from the live world. Schedule backups when they will not compete with peak play, and test restoring one before you trust the process.
  6. Monitor after every major change. Record peak memory, swap use, tick time, CPU load and disk latency after adding players, a mod pack, a plugin or a new world.

Should you buy more RAM or rent a Minecraft host?

Self-hosting can be economical when you already own compatible hardware and can handle networking, updates and recovery. It also gives you direct control over files and configuration. The trade-off is that you are responsible for uptime, port exposure, backups, hardware failures and troubleshooting.

A managed host bundles RAM with CPU time, storage, automated installers, backups, support and sometimes DDoS protection. Compare the complete service rather than a RAM number in isolation. Published plan ranges illustrate the market but do not guarantee identical performance: Shockbyte currently lists tiers from 1 GB to 17 GB or more and advertises Java, Bedrock, Vanilla, Paper, Forge and modded support; PingByte lists Java plans from 2 GB through 12 GB with descriptions aimed at small groups, light mods or plugins, medium servers and larger communities.

Decision factor Questions to ask a host
RAM and upgrades How much is dedicated, can it be increased without rebuilding, and is the upgrade path clear?
CPU What processor generation and single-thread performance are provided, and is CPU time shared?
Software support Are your Java or Bedrock edition, server version, mod loader, plugins and add-ons supported?
Storage and backups Is storage SSD-based, how often are backups made, how long are they retained, and can you download them?
Network and location Where is the server located relative to players, and what protection and bandwidth limits apply?
Operations Is there a control panel, migration help, support coverage, uptime commitment and refund policy?

Plan inventory, supported versions, prices and policies change, so verify the current terms and your region before paying. A cheaper plan with a congested CPU or poor backups is not equivalent to a more expensive plan with reliable single-thread performance and recovery tools.

Symptoms that your allocation is wrong

Signs you may need more memory

  • The Minecraft process approaches its maximum heap during normal peak play and the host still has unused CPU capacity and physical RAM.
  • The operating system begins swapping or killing the process because other services have no reserve.
  • Loading a new area or joining several players causes repeated allocation failures after configuration and mod requirements have been checked.

Signs RAM is not the answer

  • Tick time is high while memory remains comfortably below the limit; reduce entity counts, simulation distance or expensive automation.
  • Lag coincides with backups or world saves; move those jobs to quieter periods or faster storage.
  • Usage rises steadily after a plugin or mod change; isolate the component and update or remove it.
  • Players are far from the server geographically; choose a closer location or improve the network path rather than adding memory.

Bottom line

Use 1 GB only as the Bedrock small-server minimum consideration, and treat Mojang’s 4 GB figure as the published Bedrock system-requirements anchor. For a few friends, begin around 2–4 GB allocated to a vanilla server and provide at least 4–8 GB in the whole machine; active exploration, larger groups and mods commonly justify 4–12 GB or more. Java has no official per-player formula, so measure the actual workload, preserve host headroom and upgrade only when monitoring shows memory—not CPU, storage, entities or network—is the constraint.
