Minecraft Server Requirements for 10 Players: Java, Bedrock and Realms

A 10-player Minecraft server needs a fast modern CPU, SSD storage, several gigabytes of available memory and correct network configuration. Here is how Java self-hosting, Bedrock Dedicated Server and Realms differ, plus guidance for old PCs and troubleshooting.

For about 10 simultaneous players, a mostly vanilla Minecraft server needs a modern 64-bit computer, a high-clock CPU, SSD storage, a compatible Java runtime for Java Edition, and several gigabytes of memory reserved for the server while the operating system keeps enough RAM to function. There is no official hardware formula that guarantees performance for exactly 10 players: mods, plugins, add-ons, simulation distance, view distance, world generation and the number of worlds can change the requirement substantially.

What a 10-player Minecraft server actually needs

The player count is only one part of the workload. A server must simulate entities, process redstone and farms, save chunks, generate new terrain, send world data to every connected player and run any plugins, mods or add-ons. Ten players exploring the same prepared area is much easier than ten players flying in different directions and forcing constant terrain generation.

For a small vanilla Java world, prioritize these components in order:

  • CPU: Favor strong single-thread performance and a high clock speed. A large number of slow cores is less useful for the main simulation thread than a fast core.
  • Memory: Reserve several gigabytes for the server, but leave RAM for the operating system, file cache, backups and other services. Never assign every installed gigabyte to Java.
  • Storage: Use an SSD. World saves and chunk generation involve frequent reads and writes, and an SSD reduces storage latency compared with a mechanical hard drive.
  • Operating system: Use a supported 64-bit system and keep it patched. The exact Java runtime and Bedrock package requirements can change with releases.
  • Network: Remote players need a stable broadband connection, router port-forwarding and firewall rules. The server’s upload capacity matters because the host sends world and player updates to everyone connected.

These are practical design priorities, not an official Mojang guarantee for a particular processor, memory allocation or internet speed.

How much RAM does a 10-player server need?

No official source publishes a universal RAM equation for exactly 10 concurrent players. The published numbers you may see elsewhere are often client requirements or platform minimums, not a promise that a server will run ten players smoothly.

Java Edition memory planning

Mojang Studios lists 8 GB of RAM with a discrete GPU, or 12 GB with integrated graphics, as current Java Edition minimum client memory, and lists 16 GB as recommended (2026). Those figures describe the computer running the game client; they are not a server allocation formula. A dedicated server still needs memory for the operating system and its own Java process.

For a mostly vanilla ten-player Java server, plan a host with enough physical RAM to give the server several gigabytes without starving the operating system. If the same computer also runs a player client, voice chat, backups or other applications, leave additional headroom. Allocate less than the machine’s total memory so the system can cache world files and complete saves without swapping.

When memory use rises

  • Large modpacks and server-side plugins add code and data that remain in memory.
  • High simulation or view distance keeps more chunks active for each player.
  • Ten players spread across unexplored terrain trigger more chunk generation than a group in one base.
  • Multiple worlds, extensive redstone, mob farms and large entity counts increase the active workload.
  • Automated backups and map tools need temporary memory and disk space while they run.

Increase the allocation only after observing the server. More RAM cannot fix a CPU-bound tick loop, a slow disk or a network problem.

Bedrock Dedicated Server memory

The official Bedrock Dedicated Server requirements list at least 1 GB of RAM for small servers. This is a minimum, not a target for every ten-player setup. Add headroom for add-ons, higher simulation distance, larger worlds and other processes.

Java self-hosting versus Bedrock self-hosting

Factor Java self-hosting Bedrock self-hosting
Official software Free to download from the Minecraft website. Free to download from the Minecraft website.
Published hardware reference No official ten-player CPU/RAM formula; use a fast modern 64-bit host and several gigabytes of headroom. Official minimum for small servers: Intel Core i3-3210 or AMD A8-7600 equivalent CPU and at least 1 GB RAM.
Platform compatibility Java Edition clients; cross-play with Bedrock is not provided by the official server itself. Designed for Bedrock clients on supported platforms; Java clients do not join by default.
Mods and extensions Broad mod and plugin ecosystem, with higher CPU, memory and maintenance demands. Add-ons and configuration options are available, but the extension model differs from Java.
Network work Router port-forwarding and firewall configuration are normally required for players outside the home network. Java commonly uses port 25565. Router and firewall configuration are also required; use the ports specified by the current Bedrock package documentation.
Backups Self-hosted owners must create and verify their own backups. Self-hosted owners must create and verify their own backups.
Supported operating systems Depends on the current Java server package and compatible Java runtime. The official package publishes its supported Windows software requirements; verify them before deployment.
Maintenance Updates, permissions, files, backups, security and troubleshooting are your responsibility. Updates, permissions, files, backups, security and troubleshooting are your responsibility.

Do not treat the Bedrock minimum as a recommendation for a heavily populated or add-on-rich world. Likewise, do not convert Java client memory figures into a server requirement.

Can an old PC run a 10-player server?

Possibly, if it meets the current software requirements and the world is modest. An old computer with a relatively fast processor, an SSD and enough physical RAM can be more suitable than a newer machine with a slow hard drive and weak single-thread performance.

Check the old computer before committing

  1. Confirm 64-bit support and the operating system. Install the Java runtime required by the current Java server release, or verify that the Bedrock package supports the installed Windows version.
  2. Identify the storage device. Moving the world to an SSD is often a more meaningful upgrade than adding low-speed CPU cores.
  3. Check installed memory. The server must share RAM with the operating system and any desktop applications. Do not run a client, browser with many tabs and server on a machine that is already paging to disk.
  4. Test a copy of the world. Start with the intended view and simulation distances, then have players explore in the way they normally will.
  5. Watch tick performance and system load. If lag appears while CPU usage is concentrated on one core, adding RAM will not solve the bottleneck. If the system swaps or spends time waiting on storage, memory or an SSD upgrade may help.
  6. Plan for heat and uptime. A laptop or aging desktop may throttle under sustained load. Clean cooling paths and ensure the machine can run continuously without unexpected sleep or shutdown.

An old PC is a reasonable experiment for a private group, but it should not be exposed to the public internet without current operating-system patches, a firewall and a backup plan.

Network and firewall requirements

Players on the same local network may be able to connect without exposing the server publicly. Players joining from the internet generally require a router rule that forwards the server’s port to the host computer, plus a firewall rule allowing the server process to receive traffic.

Java connection checklist

  • Give the host a stable local address, preferably a DHCP reservation in the router.
  • Allow the Java server process through the operating system firewall.
  • Forward the Java server port, commonly 25565, from the router to the host’s local address.
  • Have a player outside the home network test the public address; testing only from inside can produce misleading results because some routers do not support loopback connections.
  • Do not publish the server address broadly until access controls, operator permissions and backups are ready.

Bedrock connection checklist

  • Use the port and protocol documented for the current Bedrock Dedicated Server package rather than copying a Java configuration.
  • Permit the Bedrock server through the firewall and forward the matching router rule.
  • Test from a different network, such as a mobile connection, and confirm that the client edition matches the server.

The official material does not establish one guaranteed upload-speed number for ten players. Actual demand depends on view distance, exploration, entity activity and how much world data changes. If players report timeouts while the server itself is healthy, investigate the router, firewall, internet connection and upstream bandwidth before changing memory settings.

Realms or self-hosting: which is easier?

Realms is the simpler choice when the goal is a personal shared world with minimal administration. Minecraft Help describes Realms as a personal server with automatic backups for you plus up to 10 players at a time. You do not configure a home router, maintain a server computer or build your own backup routine.

Need Realms Self-hosted server
Fastest setup Sign up, create or select a world, and invite players through the game service. Install software, create a world, configure settings, open access and test connections.
Automatic backups Included as part of the Realms service. You must schedule, store and periodically restore-test backups.
Control over files More limited than direct access to a server directory. Direct access to world files, configuration, logs and scripts.
Mods, plugins and add-ons Constrained by the service’s supported content model. More control, especially for Java mods and plugins, at the cost of compatibility work.
Network configuration No home port-forwarding task for invited players. Router forwarding, firewall rules and public-connectivity testing are your responsibility.
Maintenance Lower day-to-day maintenance. You handle updates, security, crashes, permissions, backups and hardware failures.
Performance headroom Managed by the service within its plan and platform limits. Determined by your CPU, memory, storage and network, with full responsibility for tuning.

Choose Realms when convenience and automatic backups matter more than deep customization. Choose self-hosting when you need direct file access, Java mods or plugins, custom server settings, or the ability to run additional worlds and services. Realms’ “up to 10 players” wording refers to the owner plus up to 10 players at the same time; confirm the current service limits before relying on a particular plan.

Recommended setup process for a 10-player server

  1. Select the edition first. Match the server to the clients your group owns. Java and Bedrock are separate server ecosystems by default.
  2. Prepare the host. Use a modern 64-bit operating system, a high-clock CPU, SSD storage and enough physical RAM to leave several gigabytes for the server without exhausting system memory.
  3. Install the current server package. Download the official Java or Bedrock software, then verify the current Java runtime, package requirements and supported operating systems for that release.
  4. Create a test world. Set the intended view distance and simulation distance. Keep these moderate until you know how the hardware behaves with players exploring.
  5. Configure access. Set operator permissions, a whitelist or equivalent access control, and the server’s gameplay settings before inviting the group.
  6. Automate backups. Copy the world while the server is safely stopped or use a documented, consistent backup method. Keep at least one backup on different storage and perform a restore test.
  7. Configure the network only if needed. For internet play, reserve the host’s local address, add the correct firewall rule and forward the edition’s documented port.
  8. Load-test realistically. Have players perform normal activities, including exploration, Nether travel, farms and teleportation if those will be common. Watch for tick delays, memory pressure, disk saturation and disconnects.
  9. Update deliberately. Back up before changing the server version, Java runtime, mods, plugins or add-ons. Check compatibility and keep the operating system patched.

Common failure modes and fixes

Players cannot connect from outside the home

Recheck the public address, router forwarding destination, firewall rule and server port. Test from a genuinely external network. If local players can connect but external players cannot, the issue is usually routing, firewall policy or the internet provider’s inbound-connection restrictions rather than RAM.

The server lags when players explore

Exploration forces chunk generation and saving. Use an SSD, reduce view or simulation distance, pre-generate terrain where supported, and avoid running other heavy applications on the host. A faster main CPU thread is generally more valuable than many additional slow cores for this workload.

Adding memory did not remove lag

Check whether the server is CPU-bound, waiting on storage or spending time on entities and redstone. More allocation cannot repair a slow simulation thread, excessive active chunks or a saturated disk.

The world became corrupted or a change broke the server

Stop the server, preserve the current files, restore the last known-good backup and verify that the Java runtime, server version and every mod, plugin or add-on are compatible. Do not overwrite your only backup with an untested upgrade.

The old PC shuts down or slows after hours

Check temperatures, power settings, sleep timers and cooling. Sustained server load can expose thermal throttling or failing storage even when a short test appears successful.

What to verify before deployment

  • The current Java runtime requirement for the exact Java server version.
  • The current Bedrock Dedicated Server package requirements and supported Windows software.
  • The default port and protocol for the edition you are hosting.
  • The current Realms player limit and backup behavior for the service available in your region.
  • That every client, mod, plugin and add-on is compatible with the selected server version.
  • That you can restore a backup and reconnect from outside the local network.

Server software, ports, supported operating systems and service limits can change with releases. Recheck the official Minecraft documentation immediately before putting the world into regular use.

Bottom line for a 10-player world

A small vanilla world is within reach of a capable older desktop, but the safest self-hosting profile is a modern 64-bit machine with a fast CPU, SSD storage, several gigabytes reserved for the server and additional RAM kept free for the operating system and backups. Bedrock publishes a 1 GB small-server minimum and an Intel Core i3-3210 or AMD A8-7600-equivalent CPU, but those are minimums rather than guarantees for add-ons or demanding settings. If you want the least technical work and automatic backups, Realms is the straightforward option; if you need file, mod or plugin control, self-hosting provides it while making you responsible for networking, maintenance and recovery.
