What shulkers are and where they spawn
Shulkers are hostile mobs that inhabit End Cities. Their purple, square shells visually blend with the cities’ purpur blocks, allowing one to remain unnoticed until you enter a room, corridor or balcony. That camouflage is the first danger: a shulker you did not see can open suddenly and fire while you are concentrating on loot or navigation.
When a shulker detects a player, it opens its shell and launches a shulker bullet. Mojang describes the projectile as following the world grid: it travels in straight-line segments, then makes 90-degree turns as it pursues its target. Jens “Jeb” Bergensten summarized the design as a cube-shaped mob whose projectiles “follow the grid, chasing after the player by flying in straight paths and then doing 90 degree turns.” The description appears in Mojang’s January 30, 2017 “Meet the Shulker” article and its December 11, 2025 shulker feature.

A hit applies levitation. Instead of merely losing health, you can be lifted above a floor, balcony or bridge. A second hit while you are airborne can keep the sequence going, and the resulting fall can kill you even when the initial projectile did little direct damage.
Prepare before opening an End City room
Preparation is less about maximizing damage than about preventing one projectile from turning into a fall. Use this checklist before you cross a doorway or step onto a narrow platform:
Recommended Free Tools
- Shield: Keep it selected or immediately accessible. Mojang states that shulker bullets can be destroyed with a weapon or shield.
- Ranged weapon: A bow or another ranged option lets you attack while the shulker is open without standing beside a ledge.
- Building blocks: Carry enough solid blocks to make an emergency wall or close a line of sight.
- Retreat route: Identify a nearby wall, ceiling and safe floor before you loot. Note every open drop, ladder-like shaft and exterior edge.
- Room scan: Check purpur walls, corners and ceilings for closed shulker shells. Their appearance is deliberately easy to miss against the structure.
The cover and equipment recommendations follow from the documented projectile pathing and levitation risk. They are practical tactics, not a claim that every room has a particular layout.
How to fight a shulker safely
1. Enter with your escape route already chosen
Do not walk directly to the chest or platform you want first. Pause at the entrance and decide which solid surface you will move behind if a bullet appears. If the room opens onto a void or a deep shaft, position yourself so that a short retreat reaches a wall rather than an edge.
2. React to the opening shell
A shulker opens before firing. Treat that animation as your warning. Raise your shield or move behind a solid block as soon as you see it. Because the bullet can turn at right angles, simply running in a straight line through a doorway is not a dependable escape.

3. Break line of sight with solid blocks
Place or use a solid block between you and the incoming bullet. This is safer than trying to outrun the projectile through an open room. If you have already identified a pillar, wall or ceiling, move behind it rather than improvising near a drop.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →4. Attack while the shulker is open
Use your ranged weapon from cover or from a stable floor. Close-range attacks are possible, but they put you beside the mob at exactly the moment a levitation hit could lift you over an edge. Peek, fire, and return to cover instead of remaining exposed while waiting for another opening.
5. If levitation starts, steer toward a platform
Do not panic-move toward the nearest visible loot. Use your movement to reach a solid platform or wall and avoid additional hits. Mojang specifically warns that a player can float upward, be struck again, and then fall to their death. A safe landing area is more important than finishing the attack immediately.
6. Scan again after every hit
Shulkers may teleport when attacked. The block face where you first saw one is therefore not its permanent position. After a successful hit, check adjacent walls, the ceiling and nearby corners before advancing. Keep your shield and cover plan active until the room is quiet.
7. Secure the room before looting
Once the visible shulker is dead, make a final sweep of the room and its approaches. A second mob may be camouflaged nearby, and a teleport can move the first mob out of your original line of sight. Only then should you open chests or begin breaking blocks.

Why shulker bullets are so dangerous
The projectile’s grid-following movement creates a trap for players who rely on one sharp turn or a long hallway. It can travel in a straight segment, turn 90 degrees, and continue toward you. A room that appears safe because the bullet is no longer visible may still leave it following a route around a corner.
Levitation compounds that problem. Your position changes vertically, so a floor that was safe when the bullet launched may no longer be underneath you. Repeated hits can raise you farther from a platform and increase the eventual fall. That is why cover, a shield and a preselected landing area matter more than simply dealing damage quickly.
Shulker shell drops by edition
Do not quote one universal drop rate for Minecraft. The available documentation distinguishes Java and Bedrock, and the Bedrock technical loot table expresses the result as a count rather than the Java percentage commonly cited by reference material.
| Edition | Documented result | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Java Edition | 50% chance for a shell | The cited Minecraft Wiki entry reports this chance. Looting can affect drops according to the game’s applicable loot rules. |
| Bedrock Edition | 0–1 shell | Microsoft’s Bedrock technical documentation lists a 0–1 loot count and Looting support. A kill is therefore not a guaranteed shell. |
The practical consequence is simple: count shells after each kill instead of assuming every shulker supplies one. If you are planning a storage run or a farm, state the edition and exact game version first. The figures above should not be merged into a single cross-platform percentage.

Recipe
A shulker box requires two shulker shells and one chest. Arrange the chest in the middle of a crafting grid, with one shell above it and one shell below it. The result is one shulker box.

- Play with up to four friends or brave the dungeons alone. Battle new-and-nasty mobs across action-packed, wildly varied levels, in a quest to defeat the evil Arch-Illager!
What makes the box different from a chest
A shulker box preserves its inventory when you break it. You can fill it at an End City, mine the box, and carry the packed contents back to a base without emptying it first. This is why shells are especially valuable for expedition logistics rather than merely as a decorative crafting ingredient.
The box has 27 inventory slots. If every slot contains a full 64-item stack, its theoretical capacity is 1,728 items. The capacity describes the contents inside the box; it does not mean every item in the game stacks to 64.
Shulker boxes cannot be placed inside one another. You can carry multiple filled boxes, but you cannot create an endlessly nested storage chain by putting one box in another.
Efficient End City workflow
- Clear the room and confirm that no shulker remains on a wall or ceiling.
- Collect shells while you still have a safe floor and a clear retreat.
- Craft a box once you have two shells and a chest.
- Transfer End City loot into the box, preserving the original organization you want at base.
- Break the filled box and carry it home. Do not attempt to nest it inside another shulker box.
Java and Bedrock: what changes for combat and farming
The shell recipe and inventory-preservation concept are useful on both editions, but drop rules and farm mechanics must be treated separately. Mojang’s projectile description is the common combat reference; edition-specific behavior can change with updates, so check the release notes for the version you are actually playing before building a technical farm.
| Comparison point | Java Edition | Bedrock Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Shell result cited by the references | 50% chance | 0–1 shell count |
| Looting support | Not separately quantified in the cited material | Listed in the Bedrock technical loot documentation |
| Shulker duplication timing in the cited farm tutorial | Java-only during versions 1.17–1.18 | Available from Bedrock 1.19 onward, according to that tutorial |
| Farm recommendation | Use a design matching the exact Java release | Use a design matching the exact Bedrock release |
The duplication note is version-bounded, not a promise that every current release behaves identically. A tutorial written for Java 1.17–1.18 or Bedrock 1.19 may fail after later mechanical changes. Confirm the target version before collecting materials or building around a tutorial’s dimensions.

Choosing between hunting and farming
For a first storage box, hunting through one or more End Cities is the straightforward route: fight the resident shulkers, collect the shells that actually drop, and craft when you have two. A farm becomes worthwhile when you need a sustained supply of boxes and are prepared to match its design to your edition and version. Do not estimate output from the Java percentage when playing Bedrock, or assume a duplication mechanic from one edition works in the other.
Troubleshooting common failures
“The bullet disappeared, then hit me around a corner.”
The projectile follows straight segments and 90-degree turns. Move behind a genuinely solid barrier and avoid relying on a single doorway turn. Keep your shield ready until the threat is gone.
“I killed the shulker but cannot find the shell.”
Check the drop location and your inventory, then account for the edition rule. Java’s cited chance is 50%, while Bedrock’s documented count can be zero or one. A kill without a shell is therefore possible.
“The shulker moved after I attacked it.”
Teleportation is a documented behavior. Stop advancing, scan nearby walls and ceilings, and re-establish cover before firing again.
“I keep dying after the first hit.”
The immediate problem is usually exposure near a drop. Enter from a position with a nearby platform, break line of sight as soon as a bullet appears, and steer toward solid ground if levitation begins. Avoid trading another hit for a final close-range attack.

“My farm tutorial does not work.”
Check the edition and release listed by the tutorial. The cited duplication history is Java-only for 1.17–1.18 and available on Bedrock from 1.19 onward; those boundaries do not authorize assuming the same behavior in every later release. Recheck current release notes and use a design written for your exact version.
Quick Recap
A repeatable End City run plan
- Scout: At every entrance, identify walls, ceilings, platforms and fatal drops before moving toward loot.
- Stabilize: Keep a shield and ranged weapon ready, with building blocks available for emergency cover.
- Isolate: Fight one visible threat from behind solid blocks instead of crossing an exposed room while bullets are active.
- Control elevation: If levitated, prioritize a safe platform and avoiding another hit over damage output.
- Recheck: After each attack, search for a teleporting shulker on nearby surfaces.
- Collect: Confirm shells in your inventory and remember that the drop is edition-dependent.
- Pack: Once you have two shells and a chest, craft a shulker box, fill it, break it and carry the preserved inventory home.
