Slime chunks give you a controlled underground site, while swamps avoid major excavation but usually produce fewer slimes. In either case, rates depend on edition, active player range, available spawning surfaces, and how thoroughly you block competing monster spawns.

Where slimes spawn
Slime spawning is governed by two different systems. Treating them as interchangeable is the source of many failed farms.

Slime chunks below Y=40
Every generated chunk has about a 10% chance of being a slime chunk. In one of those chunks, slimes can spawn when the spawning location is below Y=40. The chance is tied to the chunk’s world generation, not to the chunk’s appearance, so a chunk can look ordinary on the surface and still be a useful farm site.
Slime-chunk spawning is independent of light level. You do not light a platform to make slimes appear; you light it to stop other hostile mobs from using the same available population. A dark, unlit room can therefore contain valid slime positions, but it may also fill with zombies, skeletons, and other monsters that reduce the opportunities available to slimes.

Swamps between Y=51 and Y=69
Swamp slime spawning is a separate route. The Minecraft Wiki tutorial places it between Y=51 and Y=69, with slimes appearing in swamp conditions at night. This approach does not require a pre-dug underground room and is not confined to one chunk’s footprint. Its usual trade-off is a lower rate than a carefully prepared slime-chunk farm, because the farm must share the surrounding terrain and comply with the swamp’s other spawning conditions.
Mangrove swamps and other biome behavior should be checked against the edition you play rather than assumed to match a Java tutorial. Bedrock’s documented spawn rules include biome and population checks that can change which design works.

How to find a slime chunk
Use a seed-based finder
The quickest planning method is a seed-based slime-chunk finder such as Chunkbase. Enter the exact world seed, select the correct edition and version where the tool offers those choices, and inspect the coordinates it returns. A finder is only useful when its inputs match the world: a copied seed with a missing minus sign, the wrong dimension, or the wrong edition can identify the wrong chunks.
- Open your world and record its seed from the world settings or the appropriate in-game command for your edition.
- Record whether the world is Java or Bedrock and the game version you are actually running.
- Enter the seed and edition in the finder, then choose a candidate close enough to your base for practical travel.
- Write down the chunk coordinates and convert them to block coordinates before digging. A chunk is a 16-by-16-block area, so mark its boundaries in-game.
- Test the location in a copy of the world or with a small temporary platform before committing to a large excavation.
A finder predicts the generated chunk pattern; it does not guarantee that a farm will be efficient. Nearby caves, the player’s position, simulation distance, and competing mobs still determine how many spawn attempts succeed.
Find one by exploration and testing
If you do not want to use an external map, select a suspected area, mark chunk boundaries, and excavate a test room below Y=40. Keep the room dark enough for slimes but remove or block other spawnable surfaces around it. This method takes longer because a non-slime chunk gives no visual clue that it is unsuitable. It is practical when you are already mining a large area and can test several adjacent chunks.
Choose a farm site before you build
When a slime chunk is the better choice
- You want predictable platform geometry and a compact collection point.
- You can tolerate digging and lighting a substantial underground area.
- You need a high-control farm for repeated slimeball production.
- You can spawn-proof caves and terrain within the player’s active range.
When a swamp is the better choice
- You want to avoid clearing a deep room through solid stone.
- You have a large, accessible swamp and can build platforms above or within it.
- You accept that the output may be lower and more sensitive to nighttime and local terrain conditions.
- You are playing an edition or version where the swamp rules have been verified for your farm design.
Do not choose a location solely because it is close to storage. A slightly farther slime chunk can outperform a convenient swamp if the chunk is easier to isolate and the surrounding caves can be controlled.

Lay out platforms at valid heights
For a slime-chunk farm, every spawning platform must be below Y=40. Leave approximately a 2.5-block vertical gap between platforms, as described in the Minecraft Wiki tutorial, so the largest slime size has room to appear. The exact shape can vary, but every platform needs a full, valid surface and a clear path into the transport system.

For a swamp farm, keep the spawning surfaces in the Y=51–69 band and design around the actual swamp terrain. Platforms that rise out of the permitted band may look attractive but will not add valid swamp spawning positions.
Light for competition control, not slime activation
Place lights throughout the farm so ordinary hostile mobs cannot use the platforms and nearby dark pockets. Slimes do not require darkness in a slime chunk, so lighting is a population-management tool. In a swamp, preserve the nighttime conditions required by that route while still eliminating unnecessary dark surfaces that let competing monsters consume the available population.
Keep the geometry easy to inspect
- Use consistent platform heights so you can locate a blocked or invalid layer quickly.
- Keep edges open toward the lure or transport path rather than creating corners where slimes can remain stranded.
- Provide enough headroom for the largest slime and enough space for smaller slimes created after a kill.
- Make lighting, collection, and maintenance access reachable without opening new dark rooms.
Control the mob population around the farm
Spawn attempts compete for the edition’s monster population. A perfect slime platform can appear inactive when caves, ravines, hillsides, or unlit buildings nearby are consuming the available slots.
Spawn-proof nearby caves and terrain
In a slime-chunk build, inspect the area within the player’s active range, not just the room you dug. Light caves, fill them, cover valid surfaces, or otherwise make them unable to host competing monsters. Surface darkness matters too if the farm is underground but the player is close enough for surrounding terrain to participate.
Stand at a useful distance
The tutorial recommends keeping the player within 128 blocks of possible slime locations in Java-style operation. Too close can prevent a spawn attempt; too far can unload the area or allow mobs to despawn. Build an AFK platform that keeps every intended layer active while placing the player away from the spawning surfaces themselves. Bedrock’s simulation-distance settings and current active-range rules can differ, so test the position in the exact world configuration you use.
Prevent accidental unloading
Do not place the AFK point where a small movement, render-distance change, or portal trip leaves part of the farm outside the active area. If output changes when you move a few blocks, measure the distance to the highest and lowest platforms and relocate the AFK point rather than redesigning the farm first.
Move slimes to a kill and collection point
Use a lure
Iron golems are commonly used to lure slimes toward a central edge, shaft, or collection chamber. Place the lure where slimes can see or path toward it without being trapped on platform corners. The exact lure position depends on the edition and the size of the chamber; test one layer before duplicating it across the farm.

Add water or another transport path
Water channels can carry slimes toward a drop or kill chamber, but swimming behavior differs between editions and versions. A channel that works in a Java tutorial may leave Bedrock slimes stationary, or may move only certain sizes. Build a short test channel, observe each slime size, and add signs, open gates, or alternate lanes only after confirming the behavior in your version.
Separate transport from collection
Keep the route from platform to kill chamber clear of ledges where a large slime can stop while its smaller successors fall elsewhere. A funnel, drop shaft, or enclosed corridor makes the final trap easier to inspect and prevents slimeballs from landing outside the hopper line.
Choose a killing method
| Method | How it is used | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Magma blocks | Place them in the kill chamber so slimes take contact damage while drops fall to collection. | Simple and compact, but the chamber must keep slimes over the damage surface long enough to finish them. |
| Wither roses | Use damaging blocks in an enclosed kill floor, with hoppers underneath. | Can be effective in a controlled chamber, but requires obtaining and safely handling the roses. |
| Soul campfires | Use the campfire damage area as the killing floor. | Provides a visible damage zone, but the chamber still needs careful drop alignment and protection from accidental contact. |
| Drowning | Hold slimes in a water-based chamber until the drowning system kills them. | Works only when the edition and slime behavior support the design; slower or unreliable movement can make it unsuitable. |
| Cactus | Push slimes against cactus and place collection below or beside the damage point. | Easy to build, but cactus can destroy part of the drops, reducing recovered slimeballs. |
Choose the trap after confirming transport. A high-damage design is not an improvement if slimes cannot enter it consistently. If preserving every drop matters, avoid cactus and test the hopper alignment with several slime sizes before leaving the farm unattended.
Collect slimeballs automatically
Place hoppers under the kill surface or at the end of the drop path, then connect them to chests or another storage line. Keep the first chest accessible so you can see whether slimeballs are arriving and whether other items are being destroyed or left on a ledge.
- Make the kill floor one block above the hopper intake where the selected damage method allows it.
- Cover every hopper connection so slimes cannot occupy the collection line or push items out of alignment.
- Run the first hopper into a chest and verify that a test kill sends slimeballs into that chest.
- Expand to additional storage only after the basic line collects reliably.
Run a short observation session before building a large storage array. A full chest does not prove that the farm is efficient; it proves only that at least some items reached the end of the line.

The seed or edition is wrong
Recheck the seed character by character, including a minus sign, and select the correct Java or Bedrock option in the finder. If the world was converted, copied, or opened in a different version, test the chunk in the actual world rather than trusting an old coordinate list.
The platforms are at the wrong Y level
Measure the spawning surface, not the floor of the room or the top of a decorative block. Slime-chunk platforms must be below Y=40. Swamp platforms must be in the Y=51–69 band and meet that route’s nighttime conditions.

Nearby monsters are filling the cap
Temporarily light or block every cave and dark surface you can reach within the active area. If slimes appear only after you light a distant tunnel, that tunnel was competing for the population. Continue outward until additional spawn-proofing no longer changes the result.
The player is in the wrong position
Move the AFK point so the closest platform is not too near and the farthest platform remains active. In Java-style operation, use the 128-block guidance as a starting measurement; on Bedrock, verify simulation distance and current rules instead of copying the same coordinate blindly.
There is not enough clearance
Inspect each layer for low ceilings, partial blocks, trapdoors, rails, water, or decoration that invalidates the spawn surface or blocks the largest slime. The tutorial’s approximately 2.5-block gap is a practical baseline for platform spacing.
The transport or trap is failing
Watch one slime from spawn to collection. If it stops at a corner, adjust the lure or add a channel. If it reaches the chamber but survives, test the damage floor with each size. If slimeballs disappear, replace cactus or cover gaps and confirm that every hopper points toward storage.
Edition-specific rules: Java and Bedrock
Java-oriented farm tutorials should not be copied into Bedrock without testing. Microsoft’s Bedrock spawn-rule reference treats slimes as part of the monster population and documents checks involving difficulty, biome, surface or underground status, and population control. Its spawning overview describes a cycle that checks spawn conditions, finds valid positions, evaluates population caps and spawn weight, creates the entity, and runs spawn events.
Those rules explain why simulation distance, difficulty, biome tags, and population caps affect a Bedrock farm. The documented material does not provide a universal slime-farm rate table, so a claimed hourly number from a Java build is not a Bedrock guarantee. Record your edition, game version, simulation distance, AFK position, and collection period when comparing designs.
- Verify the current difficulty setting before troubleshooting a Bedrock farm.
- Check whether the chosen biome is recognized by the current spawn rules, including swamp or mangrove-swamp behavior.
- Use the world’s simulation distance when setting the AFK point.
- Test transport and kill mechanics with real slimes rather than assuming identical swimming or pathing.
A practical build sequence
- Select the route: choose a verified slime chunk below Y=40 for control, or a swamp platform in Y=51–69 to avoid deep excavation.
- Verify the world: match the seed, edition, version, difficulty, and—on Bedrock—simulation distance to the design assumptions.
- Mark the area: outline chunk boundaries or the swamp platform footprint and establish the AFK position before digging.
- Build one test layer: provide the approximately 2.5-block clearance, valid floor, lighting, and an exit toward transport.
- Observe spawning: stand at the planned position and confirm that slimes appear before duplicating the layer.
- Expand platforms: repeat only the geometry that passed the test, keeping every layer in its valid height band.
- Spawn-proof the active area: light, fill, or cover caves and terrain that can host competing monsters.
- Install transport: add an iron-golem lure, water channel, drop, or another method proven in your edition.
- Install the kill chamber: choose magma blocks, wither roses, soul campfires, drowning, or cactus according to reliability and drop preservation.
- Connect collection: align hoppers and chests, then run test kills and inspect the entire item path.
- Measure output consistently: use the same AFK location and observation period when making changes, because moving the player can change which spawn spaces are active.
What to expect from a well-tuned farm
A farm is efficient when valid slime surfaces remain available, competing monsters are suppressed, the player keeps the area active, and every spawned slime reaches the kill chamber. The 10% figure describes the chance that a generated chunk is a slime chunk; it is not a promise that one out of every ten spawn attempts will produce a slime, nor is it an hourly production rate. Likewise, the Y thresholds identify valid locations, not guaranteed output.
For a high-control build, prioritize a correctly identified chunk, multiple clean platforms, complete nearby spawn-proofing, and a collection system that loses no drops. For a lower-effort build, a swamp can be sensible even when its rate is lower, because avoiding a large excavation may matter more than maximum slimeballs per hour.
