Normal squid and glow squid are different mobs with different spawning rules, so one farm cannot reliably produce both drops. In Java Edition, target ordinary squid in river or ocean water at Y 50–63, while glow-squid farms need completely dark Overworld water below Y 30 (and not the Deep Dark). Bedrock Edition uses different, more surface-oriented or cave-based rules. Build a controlled water chamber, move squid into a kill zone, and collect the drops with hoppers and chests.

Normal squid and glow squid at a glance

Mob Java Edition spawning Bedrock Edition spawning Drop Main uses
Squid Schools of 2–4 in river and ocean variants, in water or waterlogged conditions from Y 50 through 63. Surface-oriented spawning in ocean and river biomes; the Java Y 50–63 rule does not transfer directly. Ink sacs Black dye applications and book-and-quill writing.
Glow squid Schools of 2–4 in complete darkness in Overworld water below Y 30, except the Deep Dark. Underground water below Y 30 under cave-spawn rules. Glow ink sacs Glowing sign text and glow item frames.

The 2–4 school size and the Java vertical ranges are reported by the Minecraft Wiki page accessed in 2026. Actual output depends on edition, game version, player position, available spawn space and the farm layout, so no single items-per-hour figure applies to every build.

Where normal squid spawn

Java Edition: rivers and oceans at Y 50–63

In Java Edition, ordinary squid spawn in river or ocean variants between Y 50 and Y 63. The spawning volume must be water, including valid waterlogged-block conditions. Schools contain two to four squid. A farm that places its chamber far below this band may look attractive because it is easy to excavate, but it will not target the normal Java squid rules.

Java squid use the water-creature mob cap, which they share with dolphins. If nearby ocean water is full of eligible water creatures, fewer attempts can result in squid. A controlled farm therefore has two jobs: provide a valid chamber in the right vertical range and reduce other valid water spaces that can consume spawning attempts.

Bedrock Edition: surface-oriented ocean and river spawning

Bedrock Edition does not use the Java Y 50–63 prescription as a universal rule. Squid spawning is surface-oriented in ocean and river biomes, so a Bedrock design should be planned around an exposed or near-surface water environment in the correct biome rather than copied block-for-block from a Java tutorial. Because Bedrock and Java handle spawning differently, identify the edition before choosing the site, height and chamber shape.

Where glow squid spawn

Java Edition: darkness and Y below 30

Java glow squid spawn in schools of two to four in complete darkness in Overworld water below Y 30. The Deep Dark is excluded. A glow-squid chamber must therefore be underground, entirely dark and filled with valid water. Any light leak can invalidate the intended spawning condition, and a chamber in the Deep Dark is not a substitute for an ordinary below-Y-30 location.

Bedrock Edition: underground water under cave rules

Bedrock glow squid also require underground water below Y 30, but their spawning follows Bedrock cave-spawn rules. Nearby cave animals and other eligible cave spaces can create mob-cap pressure, so clearing or controlling surrounding caves matters more than simply placing a dark pool underground. A Java glow-squid design may need substantial changes before it works in Bedrock.

What squid drops are used for

Ink sacs from normal squid

Normal squid drop ink sacs. Minecraft’s official Book and Quill article describes ink as most easily obtained from a squid. Ink sacs support black-dye applications and are the ink component used when writing in a book and quill.

The same official article lists different book limits by edition: Java Edition books allow 100 pages with up to 1,023 characters per page, while Bedrock Edition books allow 50 pages with up to 256 characters per page. Those limits affect how much text an ink-sac supply can help you store, not how many ink sacs a squid drops.

Glow ink sacs from glow squid

Glow squid drop glow ink sacs. Applying a glow ink sac to a sign turns its text from dark to always-lit; this changes the text’s presentation rather than illuminating the surrounding area like a general-purpose lamp. Glow ink sacs can also be combined with an item frame to craft a glow item frame, allowing an item or map displayed in it to remain clearly visible in dark surroundings.

These uses are confirmed in official Minecraft Bedrock notes, statements from Minecraft gameplay developer Cory Scheviak, and Microsoft’s entity documentation. A glow-squid farm is therefore useful for sign-heavy storage rooms, map walls and low-light navigation, while an ordinary squid farm is the correct source for black-ink needs.

Choose the farm type before building

Your goal Edition-specific target Site requirement Drop collected
Book writing or black dye Java: river/ocean water at Y 50–63. Bedrock: surface-oriented ocean/river water. Controlled water chamber with competing water spaces reduced where practical. Ink sacs.
Glowing signs or glow item frames Java: complete darkness in Overworld water below Y 30, excluding Deep Dark. Bedrock: underground water below Y 30 under cave rules. Light-proof underground chamber; on Bedrock, manage nearby cave-spawn spaces and animals. Glow ink sacs.
Both resources Build and operate separate normal-squid and glow-squid modules. Do not merge their water volumes or assume one height works for both. Both drop types, collected separately.

Farm engineering principles that apply to both mobs

Control the valid spawn volume

A farm works best when the intended water chamber is the obvious valid location. Enclose the chamber so water remains where the design expects it, and remove or drain nearby competing water spaces when the surrounding terrain would otherwise offer many alternatives. For glow squid, controlling nearby underground water and cave spaces is especially important on Bedrock.

Move squid out of the spawning water

Squid need the correct water conditions to spawn, but the kill zone can be outside the spawning pool. Use signs or other barriers to create an exit, then shape the water flow or chute so squid leave the chamber and arrive at the collection area. A controlled exit prevents live squid from occupying the same spawning volume indefinitely.

Provide a dependable kill zone

Documented farm designs use fall damage, suffocation or lava to kill squid. Select the method that fits your chamber and verify that the drops reach the collection point. The kill zone should be enclosed enough to prevent squid from escaping, while still leaving a clear path for item drops to hoppers.

Collect items automatically

Place hoppers beneath or beside the kill area and connect them to chests. Test hopper orientation and the entire path with a small number of drops before leaving the farm unattended. A successful kill mechanism is not enough if items land outside the hopper pickup area or fill an unmonitored container.

Expect variable rates

Output changes with edition, game version, player position, chamber dimensions and the number of competing valid spaces. Treat any rate quoted for a particular tutorial as a design-specific result, not a universal promise. Expanding controlled spawn space and reducing competition can help, but the exact improvement depends on the world.

How to build a Java normal-squid farm

  1. Select a river or ocean site. Place the spawning portion of the farm so its water blocks occupy Y 50–63. Confirm the coordinates with the Java debug screen or another in-game coordinate display.
  2. Define a compact water chamber. Build walls and a floor that keep water in a known volume. The chamber must contain valid water or waterlogged conditions and should be easy to inspect for leaks.
  3. Reduce competing water. In an ocean, the surrounding sea can provide many other valid locations. Isolate the farm’s intended area as much as the design and terrain allow, and remove nearby water spaces that are practical to drain or block.
  4. Install the exit. Use signs or another barrier arrangement to direct squid from the spawning pool into a chute. Keep the barrier pattern consistent so water remains in the chamber while squid are moved toward the kill zone.
  5. Build the kill zone. Route the chute to a fall-damage, suffocation or lava mechanism appropriate to the design. Keep the area enclosed and leave enough room for item drops to fall onto the hopper line.
  6. Add hoppers and chests. Aim hoppers into a storage chest, then test the system by manually placing an item over the pickup point. Check that every hopper is powered only if the design requires it; ordinary item transfer should not be blocked by an accidental redstone signal.
  7. Choose a safe operating position. Stand where the spawning chamber remains active according to the farm’s design, while the kill zone and storage remain loaded. Do not assume that moving far away increases production; an unloaded or out-of-range chamber produces nothing.
  8. Measure your own result. Empty the storage, run the farm for a fixed period and record the ink sacs collected. Repeat under similar conditions before changing the chamber, because one short run can be distorted by mob-cap activity or temporary pathing problems.

How to build a Java glow-squid farm

  1. Choose an Overworld site below Y 30. The spawning water must be below Y 30 and outside the Deep Dark. Keep the entire intended spawning volume underground.
  2. Make the chamber completely dark. Seal skylights, cracks and entrances that can admit light. Check the chamber after placing every access route; a single opening can change the light condition the farm depends on.
  3. Create a controlled water volume. Fill the chamber with the water arrangement required by the design and keep the boundaries clear enough that spawned glow squid can be moved toward the exit.
  4. Control surrounding underground water. Drain, block or otherwise manage nearby water spaces where practical. This concentrates spawning attempts in the farm rather than in unproductive caves.
  5. Install a squid exit and kill zone. Use signs or barriers to move glow squid out of the spawning pool, then use fall damage, suffocation or lava in a contained area. Keep the drop path aligned with hoppers.
  6. Connect storage. Route hopper output to one or more chests labelled for glow ink sacs. Separating glow ink from ordinary ink prevents mistakes when supplying sign projects.
  7. Check the exclusion and lighting conditions. Verify the chamber is not in the Deep Dark and remains below Y 30. If glow squid stop appearing after construction changes, inspect for new light sources or opened cave water before rebuilding the kill mechanism.

Bedrock farm guidance

Bedrock normal squid

Start in an ocean or river biome and design around surface-oriented spawning. A compact surface pool or a controlled section of biome water is a better starting point than a deep Java-style chamber. Use walls, barriers, a chute, a kill zone and hoppers as in the general pattern, but validate the farm in your Bedrock version before expanding it. The absence of a Java-style Y 50–63 target is the key planning difference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bedrock glow squid

Place the water chamber underground below Y 30 and keep it dark. Because Bedrock uses cave-spawn rules for glow squid, inspect nearby caves for other water and cave animals that can consume spawning opportunities. Blocking or lighting non-farm caves, where appropriate to the design, can make the farm’s intended chamber more competitive. Keep the collection system separate from any normal-squid module.

Troubleshooting: why squid are not spawning

Symptom Likely cause What to check
No ordinary squid in Java The chamber is outside Y 50–63, is not in a river or ocean variant, or lacks valid water conditions. Check the spawning block’s Y coordinate, biome and water or waterlogged state.
Few ordinary squid in Java Other water spaces or dolphins are using the shared water-creature cap. Reduce competing water and inspect nearby ocean areas before enlarging the kill chamber.
No ordinary squid in Bedrock The build copies a Java depth rule or is not in a suitable ocean/river surface environment. Move the design toward the correct surface-oriented biome conditions and test again.
No glow squid in Java The chamber is at or above Y 30, has light, or is in the Deep Dark. Verify every spawning block is below Y 30, remove light leaks and relocate if the site is Deep Dark.
No glow squid in Bedrock The chamber is not underground water below Y 30, or nearby cave-spawn pressure is overwhelming it. Check depth, darkness, surrounding caves and cave animals.
Squid appear but storage stays empty The chute, kill zone or hopper line is misaligned. Watch one squid through the entire route and place a temporary block or item to identify where drops are lost.
The farm works intermittently Rates are being affected by player position, loaded chunks, edition rules or changing mob-cap conditions. Use a fixed operating position, keep the chamber loaded and compare timed runs in the same world conditions.
Squid escape the kill area Water flow or barriers leave an opening. Close gaps, keep the exit one-way and inspect corners where squid can remain in water.

Using squid farms in a self-sufficient survival base

An ink farm is most useful when it is tied to the jobs that consume its output. Route ordinary ink sacs to a writing and dye station, and keep glow ink sacs near a sign room or map display. Label the chests so the two resources are not mixed, especially in a shared storage hall.

For a broader base-planning reference, Minecraft: Guide to Farming by Mojang AB and The Official Minecraft Team is an 80-page hardcover published October 9, 2018 (ISBN 9781101966426). It covers crop farming, animal breeding, hostile-mob farming and block farming, placing a squid module in the wider context of a self-sufficient survival base.

Practical checklist before you leave the farm running

  • Confirm whether the world is Java Edition or Bedrock Edition.
  • For normal Java squid, verify river or ocean water at Y 50–63.
  • For glow squid, verify underground water below Y 30; in Java, exclude the Deep Dark and enforce complete darkness.
  • On Bedrock, account for surface-oriented normal-squid spawning or cave-based glow-squid spawning rather than copying Java coordinates.
  • Control nearby competing water spaces where the terrain makes that possible.
  • Ensure signs or barriers move squid into a fully enclosed kill zone.
  • Align hoppers with the exact item-drop location and connect them to labelled chests.
  • Test a timed run and treat the result as specific to your edition, version, player position and design.

Bottom line

Farm normal squid and glow squid as separate projects. Java normal squid belong in controlled river or ocean water at Y 50–63, while Java glow squid need complete darkness in Overworld water below Y 30 and never the Deep Dark. Bedrock requires its own surface and cave-spawn approach. Once the correct spawning volume is isolated, a one-way water exit, contained kill zone and hopper storage turn either mob into a dependable source of ink for writing, dye, glowing signs and glow item frames.
