To make stained glass in Minecraft, place one dye in the center of a 3×3 crafting grid and surround it with eight regular glass blocks. The recipe produces eight stained-glass blocks in that dye’s color. Minecraft has 16 dye-linked stained-glass colors, and those blocks can also be turned into panes for thinner windows and larger façades.

Stained glass is mainly a transparent decorative building material. It can recolor a beacon beam, but it does not serve the same purpose as tinted glass, which blocks light so you can inspect dark interiors such as mob farms. The best result comes from choosing a limited palette, scaling the motif to Minecraft’s block grid, and deciding early whether the window is a thin pane installation, a thick block mosaic, or part of a beacon.

What stained glass does in Minecraft

Stained glass is regular glass colored by a dye. It remains transparent, so you can see through it while the color changes the appearance of the view beyond it. That makes it useful for windows, skylights, domes, mosaics, decorative façades and beacon installations.

Mojang describes the basic recipe as surrounding any color of dye with regular glass in a crafting bench. The same colored glass can be made into panes when you want a thinner window element. Stained glass should not be treated as a light-blocking block: if your design requires darkness inside a structure, tinted glass is the functional choice.

How to craft stained-glass blocks

Required materials

  • Eight regular glass blocks.
  • One dye in the color you want.
  • A crafting table or another 3×3 crafting interface.

The output is eight stained-glass blocks, so one dye colors a full batch rather than a single block.

Exact crafting steps

  1. Open a 3×3 crafting grid.
  2. Place the dye in the center slot.
  3. Fill all eight surrounding slots with regular glass blocks. The glass must occupy every slot around the dye.
  4. Move the resulting eight stained-glass blocks into your inventory.

The arrangement is symmetrical: the dye is the center ingredient and glass forms a complete ring around it. If the recipe does not appear, check that you used regular glass rather than a different transparent block and that the dye is in the middle slot.

Planning glass quantities

Because each craft consumes eight glass blocks and yields eight colored blocks, the glass requirement scales directly with the number of dye batches. Prepare separate stacks for each color before building a multicolor window. A two-color pattern requires two dye batches; a five-color pattern requires five, with the exact number of batches for each shade determined by the design.

All 16 stained-glass colors

Stained glass follows Minecraft’s 16-color dye palette:

  • White
  • Orange
  • Magenta
  • Light blue
  • Yellow
  • Lime
  • Pink
  • Gray
  • Light gray
  • Cyan
  • Purple
  • Blue
  • Brown
  • Green
  • Red
  • Black

Each color is a separate block type. A window can use one shade for a clean monochrome effect or several shades for a picture, emblem or geometric pattern. Dark colors are particularly useful for outlines because they separate adjacent bright regions at a distance.

Edition-specific dye substitutions

Bedrock and Education documentation allows some base materials to substitute for their corresponding dyes in crafting contexts. Examples include bone meal for white, ink sacs for black, lapis lazuli for blue and cocoa beans for brown. Treat these as edition-specific crafting behavior, not a universal rule for every version.

Java and Bedrock data handling and identifiers have changed over time. If you are following a command, importing a structure or checking an item identifier, verify the target edition and version first. The visual recipe is stable—dye in the center, eight glass around it—but inventory names, commands and data values can differ.

Making stained-glass panes

Stained-glass blocks can be crafted into stained-glass panes using the pane arrangement used for ordinary glass panes. Replace the ordinary glass in that pattern with blocks of the color you want. The result is a thinner transparent element suited to narrow wall openings and long runs of windows.

Panes are especially effective when you want a façade to read as a thin membrane rather than a solid colored wall. They connect along their edges, allowing a large uninterrupted window while using less visual depth than full blocks. Use blocks instead when the window itself is part of a thick frame, a skylight with substantial depth, a floor mosaic or a beacon structure.

Choosing blocks or panes

Choice Best fit Design effect
Stained-glass blocks Thick frames, skylights, mosaics and beacon installations A solid, full-block window with more depth
Stained-glass panes Thin wall windows and long uninterrupted façades A lighter, narrower window surface that links across openings

The two forms share the same color palette. Decide based on wall thickness, the amount of depth you want around the opening and whether the installation must align with a beacon beam.

Using stained glass to change a beacon beam

Place stained glass or stained-glass panes in the path of a beacon beam to change the beam’s color. The referenced beacon documentation states that panes have the same beam effect as stained-glass blocks, so either form can be used when the construction allows the beam to pass through it.

Beacon design choices

  • Use a single color for a clear, strong visual signal over a base, tower or plaza.
  • Use several colored sections when the beam passes through a designed glass feature rather than a simple cap.
  • Choose blocks for a substantial beacon housing and panes for a lighter, more open frame.
  • Keep the beam’s route in mind while building: any colored glass intended to affect it must sit directly in that path.

A beacon installation is functional as well as decorative, so test the view from the ground and from nearby buildings. A color that reads clearly against a daytime sky can appear darker against an interior background or at night.

Stained glass versus tinted glass

Property Stained glass Tinted glass
Main purpose Transparent colored building material Viewing dark areas while keeping light out
Light behavior Designed as ordinary transparent glass with color Blocks light from passing through
Typical use Windows, mosaics, skylights, façades and beacon beams Inspection windows for dark mob farms and similar interiors
Coloring method Craft regular glass with one dye A separate functional block, not a substitute for dyed decorative glass

If you want to watch a dark mob farm without illuminating its spawning area, use tinted glass. Stained glass would add color but is not equivalent because it is primarily a transparent decorative material.

How to design a stained-glass window

1. Choose the palette before placing blocks

Start with two to five related dye colors. A restricted palette makes the motif readable and prevents small windows from becoming visual noise. Reserve a dark shade for outlines, separators or corner details. For example, a light-blue and white field with a blue outline gives a simple cool-toned window; adding every available color at once usually makes the pattern harder to read.

2. Scale the motif to the block grid

Designs that look obvious on paper can disappear when reduced to a few Minecraft blocks. Small symbols, flowers, crests and diamonds need enough blocks or panes in each region to form a recognizable shape. If a diagonal is only one block wide, consider enlarging the entire window or converting the diagonal into a stepped pattern.

3. Add an opaque frame

Surround the colored area with dark wood, stone, copper or another opaque frame. A solid border gives the eye a clear edge and keeps adjacent colors from blending into the background. It also makes a multicolor panel read as one architectural feature instead of a hole filled with scattered blocks.

4. Match the material to the wall depth

Use panes in a thin wall opening or along a long façade where you want the window surface to sit lightly between supports. Use blocks when the window is part of a thick wall, when you are building a skylight with visible depth, or when the colored glass itself forms a mosaic or beacon housing.

5. Test the design in its actual lighting

Inspect the palette in daylight, at night and with the interior lights switched on. A color that looks vivid against the sky can look subdued when viewed from inside. Build a small test panel near the intended location before committing materials to a large façade.

Build ideas by project type

Two-color chapel or hall window

Use a light field and a dark outline for a restrained architectural window. A central diamond, cross or stepped arch needs only a few colored regions, making this a good first project. Panes keep the wall thin; blocks add a heavier, stone-and-glass appearance.

Large geometric mosaic

Choose three to five related colors and repeat a diamond, chevron or radial motif across a broad wall. Establish the outline first, then fill each region with one color. Repeating a module makes it easier to expand the design without losing symmetry.

Floral or nature motif

Use green for stems or leaves and reserve brighter colors for petals. Enlarge the flower so each petal has a visible area rather than a single isolated block. A dark border around the complete panel helps the organic shape remain legible against the landscape.

Banner, crest or town emblem

Translate the emblem into large color bands and blocky silhouettes. Keep the outer contour dark, place the dominant color in the largest region and use a contrasting accent only where the symbol needs emphasis. Build the design on a flat temporary wall first so you can check its proportions from the intended viewing distance.

Skylight or domed roof

Blocks work well when the roof has substantial thickness or when the glass must align with a stepped dome. Use a limited palette so the pattern remains coherent from below. Check the interior view at different times of day because the sky behind the glass changes the apparent intensity of each color.

Beacon crown or tower

Build an opaque frame around a stained-glass section placed in the beacon’s beam path. Panes can make the crown feel open, while blocks create a more monumental cap. Choose the color in relation to the surrounding skyline so the beam remains visible from the locations where you want it noticed.

Dark-farm observation window

For a window into a dark mob farm, use tinted glass rather than stained glass. The goal is to see inside while keeping the farm dark; decorative color is secondary to that light-blocking function.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Natural generation examples

Stained glass can appear in generated structures, but finding it naturally is not the normal crafting route. Wiki documentation records magenta stained glass in End cities and brown stained glass in trail ruins. These examples are useful when exploring, yet a planned build still depends on the dye-and-glass recipe because generated structures do not provide every color or a predictable quantity.

Edition and version checks before building

  • Confirm whether you are playing Java, Bedrock or Education Edition before relying on a material substitution.
  • Use the in-game recipe book for the target version when a recipe does not unlock as expected.
  • Verify item identifiers before using commands or structure files; historical Java and Bedrock data handling has changed.
  • Check the visual result in the actual world and lighting conditions, because color perception depends on the background and time of day.

A practical planning checklist

  1. Decide whether the window is decorative, a beacon component or a dark-area inspection window.
  2. For decorative work, choose two to five colors and select a dark outline material.
  3. Measure the opening and decide whether panes or full blocks suit its depth.
  4. Craft enough regular glass and dye batches for the complete pattern; each batch uses eight glass and one dye and yields eight colored blocks.
  5. Build a small sample motif and view it from the distance and angles that matter.
  6. Test the palette in daylight, at night and under interior lighting.
  7. For a beacon, place the selected glass directly in the beam path and confirm the color from ground level.
  8. For a dark mob-farm window, replace the decorative plan with tinted glass so the interior remains unlit.

Troubleshooting common problems

The recipe is not producing stained glass

Check the grid shape first: the dye must be in the center and all eight surrounding slots must contain regular glass. If you are on Bedrock or Education Edition, a documented base-material substitute may work for a corresponding dye; do not assume that substitution applies to Java.

The window looks muddy or unreadable

Reduce the palette, enlarge the motif and add a dark opaque border. A design that uses too many similar shades or regions that are only one block wide will lose definition when viewed from a distance.

The color looks different indoors

Compare a sample in daylight, at night and under the interior lighting used by the finished building. Transparent colored glass is strongly affected by what lies behind it, so adjust the palette or the frame rather than judging from the inventory icon alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The beacon is not changing color

Make sure the stained glass or pane is directly in the beam’s route. Recheck the construction from below and remove any misplaced section that is beside the beam rather than intersecting it.

The mob farm is no longer dark

Stained glass is not a light-blocking substitute. Replace the inspection section with tinted glass when the farm must remain dark while visible from outside.

The Bottom Line

Craft stained glass by surrounding one dye with eight regular glass blocks, then choose among 16 colors, panes or full blocks according to the window’s scale and depth. Use stained glass for transparent decoration and beacon color; use tinted glass when seeing into a dark build without admitting light is the actual requirement.
