Short answer: Make stone tools as soon as you have cobblestone, move to iron for everyday survival, reserve diamond for blocks that require its mining level, and upgrade your best diamond tools to netherite late in the game. Pickaxes handle stone and ores, axes handle wood, shovels handle soil, and hoes prepare farmland and break many plant-based blocks. Watch the durability bar, and use an anvil rather than a crafting grid or grindstone when an enchanted tool must keep its enchantments.

This guide gives the crafting layouts, block requirements, material trade-offs, repair choices, and edition qualifications you need to choose tools without wasting scarce resources.

What each Minecraft tool is for

Tools are specialized: using the right one makes a block break efficiently and determines whether an ore drops its resource. A tool is not just a speed upgrade; for several ores, the mining tier controls whether you receive anything at all.

Pickaxe

A pickaxe is the essential stone-and-mineral tool. Use it for stone, deepslate, ores, and other hard blocks. It is the tool whose tier most directly controls progression because several valuable blocks require a minimum mining level.

Axe

An axe is the fast choice for wood and wooden blocks. It also serves as a practical weapon, although combat damage and some behavior differ between Java and Bedrock Edition, so do not assume a damage recommendation from one edition applies unchanged to the other.

Shovel

A shovel is designed for soil-type blocks such as dirt, sand, gravel, clay, and similar terrain. It can also turn suitable dirt into paths, making it useful for both excavation and landscaping.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hoe

A hoe tills dirt into farmland for crops. It also breaks many plant-based blocks faster than an un specialized tool, so it earns a place in farms and areas filled with vegetation even when you are not planting.

Sword

A sword is not a mining tool, but it uses the same basic material-and-stick logic. Keep it separate from your tool plan: a pickaxe, axe, shovel, and hoe solve block-breaking problems, while a sword is primarily for combat.

How to craft the core tools

All of these recipes use a three-by-three crafting grid. In the diagrams, M means one unit of the material tier you selected and S means a stick. A blank position is shown as ·. Planks, cobblestone, iron, diamond, and other valid tier materials fill the head or blade positions according to the recipe.

Pickaxe recipe

  1. Place three matching material units across the top row.
  2. Place one stick in the center square of the middle row.
  3. Place one stick in the center square of the bottom row.
  4. Collect the pickaxe and keep it for stone, ores, and other hard blocks.

Pattern: M M M / · S · / · S ·

Axe recipe

  1. Place two material units in the top-left and top-center squares.
  2. Place one material unit in the middle-left square.
  3. Place sticks in the middle-center and bottom-center squares.
  4. Collect the axe. The recipe can be mirrored, so the head may face the opposite side of the grid.

Pattern: M M · / M S · / · S ·

Shovel recipe

  1. Place one material unit in the top-center square.
  2. Place sticks in the middle-center and bottom-center squares.
  3. Collect the shovel for dirt, sand, gravel, clay, and path work.

Pattern: · M · / · S · / · S ·

Hoe recipe

  1. Place two material units in the top-left and top-center squares.
  2. Place a stick in the middle-center square.
  3. Place a stick in the bottom-center square.
  4. Collect the hoe, then use it on suitable dirt to create farmland.

Pattern: M M · / · S · / · S ·

Sword recipe

  1. Stack two matching material units in the top-center and middle-center squares.
  2. Place one stick in the bottom-center square.
  3. Collect the sword for combat rather than block harvesting.

Pattern: · M · / · M · / · S ·

Which materials can fill a recipe?

The same shape works with different tiers when that tier is valid for the item. Early players normally begin with wooden heads, then replace them with cobblestone, followed by iron, diamond, and eventually netherite through its upgrade process. The material changes the tool’s mining capability, speed, durability, and replacement cost; the grid shape does not.

Match the tool and tier to the block

Choose the tool by block family first, then check the minimum pickaxe tier before mining an ore. A faster-looking tool is not useful if it cannot produce the block’s resource drop.

Block family or task Best match What the match provides
Stone, deepslate, and mineral blocks Pickaxe Efficient breaking and the mining level needed for many drops
Wood and wooden construction blocks Axe Much faster wood harvesting than general-purpose tools
Dirt, sand, gravel, clay, and paths Shovel Fast excavation and the ability to create paths on suitable dirt
Farmland and many plant-based blocks Hoe Tills dirt and speeds up plant-related harvesting

Minimum pickaxe tiers for important ores and blocks

Resource or block Minimum tier stated for the drop Practical implication
Copper Stone A wooden pickaxe is not sufficient for the resource drop.
Iron Stone Upgrade from wood before mining iron for collection.
Lapis lazuli Stone Use at least a stone pickaxe to obtain the resource.
Gold Iron Bring an iron-level pickaxe or better.
Redstone Iron Bring an iron-level pickaxe or better.
Amethyst Iron Bring an iron-level pickaxe or better.
Diamond Iron An iron-level pickaxe is the minimum for collecting diamond.
Obsidian Diamond Use a diamond-level pickaxe or better.
Ancient debris Diamond Use a diamond-level pickaxe or better in the Nether.

The minimum tier tells you whether the resource drops; it does not mean every tool at that tier has the same speed or lifespan. Material choice still matters for how quickly you work and how often you must replace the tool.

Which material is best?

There is no single best material for every stage. The useful answer depends on whether you are establishing a world, mining routinely, or preparing for the hardest ordinary blocks.

Material tier Role in progression Strengths and limits
Wood First tools after gathering logs Easy to obtain and suitable for the earliest blocks, but quickly outgrown as soon as cobblestone is available.
Stone (cobblestone) Early survival workhorse Cheap replacement tier that handles the stone-level requirements for copper, iron, and lapis lazuli.
Iron General-purpose routine tier Strong balance of rarity and utility. It reaches the iron-level requirements for gold, redstone, amethyst, and diamond, making it the practical everyday choice for many players.
Diamond High-tier mining and progression gate Required for the hardest ordinary mining tasks listed here: obsidian and ancient debris. It is also the base for a netherite upgrade.
Netherite Late-game upgrade Made by upgrading diamond tools. It has higher durability, mining level, breaking multiplier, and enchantability than diamond, so it is the long-term premium tier.

Early-game choice: stone before iron

Do not spend scarce early resources trying to make every tool from a higher tier immediately. A stone pickaxe gets you to iron and meets the stone minimum for copper, iron, and lapis lazuli. Stone axes, shovels, and hoes are inexpensive backups while you build a base and gather food.

Mid-game choice: iron as the workhorse

Iron is the sensible default when you need a complete working set. It covers the iron-level ore requirements and is practical to replace during routine construction, farming, and exploration. Keep a spare iron pickaxe before long mining trips so one broken tool does not strand you underground.

Late-game choice: diamond, then netherite

Diamond becomes necessary when your projects include obsidian or ancient debris. Once you have a diamond tool worth keeping, netherite is an upgrade rather than a completely separate crafting path. Upgrade the tools you use most often first—usually a pickaxe, followed by an axe or shovel—because netherite’s advantages apply to durability, mining level, breaking multiplier, and enchantability.

Durability: what the bar tells you

Every tool has finite durability. Each use consumes part of that allowance, the durability bar changes color as the tool wears, and the item breaks when the allowance is exhausted. Durability is therefore a resource to manage alongside food, blocks, and ore.

How to see numeric durability

In Java Edition, enable advanced tooltips to expose numeric durability information in item details. The bar remains the quickest in-world warning, while the number helps you decide whether a tool is safe for a long expedition or should be repaired first. Interface wording and behavior can vary by edition; Microsoft creator documentation referenced for item behavior is Bedrock-scoped, so check the controls for the edition you play.

Habits that prevent mid-trip breakage

  • Carry a spare pickaxe when mining below ground or entering the Nether.
  • Use the tool that matches the block instead of wearing down a valuable pickaxe on dirt or wood.
  • Keep a cheap stone tool for disposable digging and reserve iron, diamond, or netherite for tasks that need their tier.
  • Inspect the durability bar before entering a cave, ocean monument, or other trip where returning to a workstation is difficult.

How to repair tools without losing enchantments

Repair method matters most after a tool has Unbreaking, Mending, or other valuable enchantments. Combining items in a crafting grid is convenient for plain tools, but it is not the safe default for an enchanted heirloom. Use an anvil when preserving the enchantment setup is the priority.

Crafting-grid combination for ordinary tools

  1. Place two damaged tools of the same type and tier in the crafting grid.
  2. Take the resulting tool, which combines their remaining durability and adds a small bonus.
  3. Use this method for unenchanted or disposable tools where preserving enchantments is not a concern.

The two inputs must match the same tool type and tier. This is a durability extension method, not a way to change a pickaxe into an axe or raise its mining level.

Anvil repair for enchanted tools

  1. Open an anvil.
  2. Place the damaged enchanted tool in the first slot.
  3. Place a compatible repair item or another compatible tool in the second slot, depending on the tool and edition.
  4. Review the output and the experience cost shown by the anvil.
  5. Take the repaired tool only when the enchantments and resulting durability are acceptable.

An anvil is the normal choice when you must keep an enchantment set. It can also combine compatible enchanted tools or an enchanted book with a tool, but the exact available combination depends on the item and edition.

Grindstone: useful reset, wrong choice for preservation

A grindstone is part of Minecraft’s repair system, but it is intended for combining or resetting eligible items rather than preserving a carefully built enchantment set. Treat it as a way to recover a usable plain tool and remove unwanted enchantments, not as the first repair station for a prized enchanted pickaxe.

Mending and Unbreaking

Enchantments improve existing abilities or add abilities. Unbreaking reduces durability damage, extending the time between repairs. Mending restores durability through experience in standard Minecraft guidance. These enchantments change how often a tool needs attention, but they do not remove the need to watch its bar or choose an appropriate repair method.

A practical tool progression

  1. Gather wood and make the first set. Craft a wooden pickaxe and the other basic tools so you can establish shelter and obtain cobblestone.
  2. Switch the mining core to stone. Replace the wooden pickaxe first. Stone is the first tier that reaches the stated copper, iron, and lapis lazuli requirements.
  3. Collect iron and build a dependable set. Make an iron pickaxe, then replace the tools you use most. Iron is the balanced routine tier for general survival.
  4. Protect diamond resources. Use an iron-level pickaxe to collect diamond, and do not waste diamond tools on blocks that a cheaper tool handles just as well.
  5. Prepare for hard blocks. Keep a diamond pickaxe for obsidian and ancient debris, the blocks in this guide that require diamond.
  6. Upgrade selectively. Turn your most-used diamond tools into netherite tools late in progression. Start with the tool whose durability and mining advantages will save the most replacement work.
  7. Add durability enchantments. Apply Unbreaking for reduced wear and Mending for experience-based restoration when those enchantments are available.

Common mistakes and fixes

Mining an ore with the wrong tier

Symptom: The block breaks but the expected resource does not appear. Fix: Check the minimum tier table before mining. Move from wood to stone for copper, iron, and lapis lazuli; use iron for gold, redstone, amethyst, and diamond; use diamond for obsidian and ancient debris.

Using a high-tier tool on every block

Symptom: Valuable tools wear down while clearing dirt, sand, or wood. Fix: Carry a shovel and axe, and keep stone or iron backups for jobs that do not require diamond or netherite.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repairing an enchanted tool in the wrong station

Symptom: The repaired output no longer has the enchantments you wanted. Fix: Stop using the crafting grid or grindstone for preservation work. Open an anvil, place the enchanted tool first, and verify the output before accepting it.

Assuming editions behave identically

Symptom: A combat or item-behavior tip from another player does not match your game. Fix: Identify whether the advice is for Java or Bedrock. Combat damage and some behavior differ, and Bedrock-scoped creator documentation should not be treated as a universal Java specification.

Starting a long trip with a nearly broken tool

Symptom: A pickaxe breaks before the expedition reaches its objective. Fix: Check the durability bar or Java advanced-tooltip number, repair at an anvil when enchantments matter, and carry a spare appropriate to the blocks you expect to mine.

Quick decision checklist

  • Breaking stone, ore, or obsidian? Take a pickaxe and confirm the minimum tier.
  • Harvesting logs or wooden structures? Use an axe.
  • Clearing dirt, sand, gravel, or clay? Use a shovel.
  • Planting crops or clearing vegetation? Use a hoe.
  • Need the most economical everyday set? Choose iron.
  • Need obsidian or ancient debris? Bring diamond or better.
  • Have a valuable enchanted tool? Repair it with an anvil and inspect the output.
  • Need a simple emergency repair for plain tools? Combine two damaged tools of the same type and tier in the crafting grid.

Keep a recipe reference nearby

If you regularly forget grid layouts, a printed Minecraft crafting handbook or beginner guide can be useful beside your keyboard or console. The most helpful references show the three-by-three diagrams and explain why a material tier matters, rather than listing recipes without the mining requirements. Use it as a quick lookup; still verify edition-specific behavior in the version you play.

The bottom line on Minecraft tool materials

Stone gets a new world moving, iron is the practical workhorse, diamond unlocks the hardest ordinary mining tasks, and netherite is the late-game upgrade for tools you intend to keep. Match pickaxes, axes, shovels, and hoes to their block families, monitor the durability bar, and preserve enchanted equipment with an anvil. That combination gives you efficient harvesting without spending high-tier materials where a cheaper tool does the job.
