Trial Chambers are procedurally generated combat structures underground in the Overworld, built from Copper and Tuff and typically extending through the Deepslate layer. You clear their randomized Trial Spawner encounters, earn Trial Keys, and spend those keys on player-specific Vault rewards. Ominous Trials add tougher encounters, Ominous Trial Keys and access to Ominous Vaults, whose reward pool includes exclusive high-value items.

What Trial Chambers are
Trial Chambers arrived with the 1.21 update in both Java and Bedrock editions. They are underground Overworld structures generated in different sizes and layouts. Their walls, floors and decorative details use Copper and Tuff, and chambers are commonly found down in and around the Deepslate layer rather than near the surface.

Its rooms and connecting corridors are assembled procedurally, so two chambers can have different routes, combat spaces and hazards. A generated chamber may contain traps, decorated pots, supply barrels, combat areas, rewards, standard Vaults and Ominous Vaults. Natural mob spawning does not occur inside the structure; hostile creatures you fight there come from its Trial Spawners or from room-specific encounters such as Breezes.
How a Trial Chamber is laid out
Procedural rooms and routes
Because the layout is randomized, there is no universal sequence of rooms to memorize. You may move from a corridor into an open arena, a trap room, a supply area or a room built around a Vault. Check side passages and elevated sections instead of assuming the first reward you see is the chamber’s only one.

Supply and reward spaces
Supply barrels and decorated pots can appear alongside the main combat route. They are part of the chamber’s generated content, while Vaults provide the structure’s repeatable key-based reward system. A Vault is not a chest replacement that you can craft or carry away: it is a permanent block placed as part of the chamber.
No ordinary spawning inside
Since natural mob spawning is disabled in Trial Chambers, clearing a room does not create the usual underground stream of zombies or skeletons. The combat pressure is controlled by the Trial Spawners and by special room encounters, making each fight easier to read once you understand which spawner is active.
Trial Spawners: the combat engine
A Trial Spawner is a new Monster Spawner variant that is naturally placed in Trial Chambers. It cannot be crafted or obtained in Survival. Unlike a conventional spawner, it is a finite challenge: it detects eligible players, creates a limited number of mobs based on the current challenge level, ejects rewards when its waves are defeated, and then shuts down temporarily.
How activation and scaling work
The spawner notices players in line of sight. Creative and Spectator players are ignored for this detection, so those modes do not raise the encounter’s difficulty. For eligible nearby players, the challenge level increases as additional players are detected. A multiplayer group therefore faces more pressure than a lone explorer, and the spawner’s reward output is proportional to that challenge level.

The scaling is tied to the number of nearby players rather than an endlessly increasing spawn rate. It creates a limited number of mobs for the encounter, then stops once the required waves have been defeated. This makes positioning, target priority and keeping every player alive more important than simply waiting for an infinite stream of enemies.
Mob categories
Each Trial Spawner belongs to one of three official categories. The category determines the style of threat, while the individual mob selection is randomized when the structure generates.

The selected mob for a category is fixed for the whole generated structure. One chamber can therefore use Zombies for its melee spawners while another uses Spiders; the combination is not rerolled every time you enter a room. Some unique rooms always use Breezes, so a Breezes encounter is a room-specific exception rather than one of the three randomized category pools.
Rewards and the 30-minute cooldown
When all mobs assigned to a Trial Spawner have been defeated, it ejects a number of rewards proportional to the current challenge level. The official Java Edition 1.21 release notes specify that the spawner then enters a 30-minute cooldown. During that period it will not spawn mobs, so repeatedly re-entering the same cleared room cannot immediately restart the encounter.

How Trial Keys and Vaults fit together
Standard Trial Keys
Completed Trial Spawners can provide Trial Keys. A standard Trial Key is used on a standard Vault, creating the basic progression loop: enter the chamber, defeat randomized waves, collect keys, then exchange those keys for Vault rewards.
Vault rules
Vaults are exclusive to Trial Chambers. As Minecraft’s official feature explanation puts it, “Unlike chests, the vault can’t be crafted, and can only be found in trial chambers.” You cannot obtain a Vault in Survival by mining it, and it does not drop as an item. Vaults resist explosions and cannot be moved by Pistons.

Each player can unlock a particular Vault once, but many different players can claim that same Vault. An orange particle stream indicates that the Vault is unopened for a nearby player. If you have already opened that specific Vault, your own previous claim prevents you from opening it again, even though another player may still be eligible.
Opening a standard Vault
- Locate a standard Vault in the chamber and confirm that it shows the orange particle stream for your character.
- Hold a Trial Key obtained from a completed Trial Spawner.
- Use the key on the Vault. The Vault dispenses its reward and records that your character has claimed it.
- In multiplayer, let each eligible teammate use their own Trial Key on the same Vault if they have not opened it before.
The one-claim rule applies to each Vault for each player, not to the entire structure. A player who has opened one Vault may still open another Vault elsewhere in the same chamber if they have the required key and have not claimed that other block.

Ominous Trials and Ominous Vaults
What makes an Ominous encounter different
Ominous content is the higher-pressure branch of the Trial Chamber progression. Ominous Trial Spawners are harder to approach and fight, and they are associated with Ominous Trial Keys rather than ordinary Trial Keys. The Bedrock Edition 1.21 notes specify a 30% chance for an Ominous Trial Spawner to eject an Ominous Trial Key.

The exact combat burden still depends on the players detected by the spawner. Additional nearby eligible players raise the challenge level, so a large group can make an Ominous encounter substantially more demanding than a solo attempt. Plan the route to the spawner, identify cover before activation and keep escape space available for ranged or fast small-melee combinations.
Ominous Trial Keys
Ominous Trial Keys are tied to Ominous Trial Spawners. A normal Trial Key does not substitute for one: the key type determines which Vault branch you can open. Because an Ominous key is not guaranteed—the stated Bedrock chance is 30% per Ominous Trial Spawner reward—the harder encounter may require more than one attempt or more than one spawner before you can claim an Ominous Vault.
Ominous Vault locations and access
Ominous Vaults are placed in harder-to-reach parts of Trial Chambers. Reaching one is therefore part of the challenge, not merely a matter of finding a different texture. Once you have an Ominous Trial Key, use it on an Ominous Vault under the same per-player principle: one claim for your character on that particular Vault, while other eligible players can claim theirs.

Loot tables are edition- and version-sensitive. The exclusives and named rewards above come from the finalized 1.21 notes cited for Java and Bedrock; future updates can change a pool, its rarity or the edition in which an item appears. Treat the table as a 1.21 reference rather than a promise that every later release will use identical drops.

Rewards from Trial Spawners
A completed Trial Spawner ejects rewards after its waves are defeated. The quantity is proportional to the current challenge level, so a group encounter and a solo encounter do not necessarily produce the same number of dropped items. Trial Spawner drops are also where the keys that continue your chamber run originate.
Standard Vault loot
Standard Vaults are intended to provide high-level Enchanted Books and equipment. They also offer a very rare chance at a Trident. The finalized Bedrock notes identify the Guster Banner Pattern and Bolt Armor Trim as standard-Vault exclusives, making ordinary Vaults worth opening even after you have acquired strong basic gear.
Ominous Vault loot
Ominous Vaults offer a stronger or exclusive reward pool. Named examples in the official snapshot notes include Ominous Bottle III, IV and V; an Enchanted Golden Apple; the Flow Banner Pattern; the Flow Armor Trim Smithing Template; and the Heavy Core. They can also provide the Mace enchantments Wind Burst, Breach and Density. These are the rewards that justify taking on the more difficult branch rather than spending every key on standard Vaults.
A practical progression route
- Find a chamber. Search the underground Overworld, particularly through the Deepslate layer, for the Copper-and-Tuff structure.
- Map the first rooms. Note corridors, cover, elevated ledges, supply barrels and visible Vaults before activating multiple spawners.
- Trigger one Trial Spawner. Enter its line of sight with only the players you intend to include in that encounter; extra nearby eligible players increase the challenge.
- Clear every wave. Prioritize targets according to the category: close melee threats, fast small-melee mobs or ranged attackers that can control the room.
- Collect the ejected rewards and Trial Keys. Remember that the spawner will not restart during its 30-minute cooldown.
- Open standard Vaults. Use Trial Keys and allow each teammate with an unclaimed status to make one personal claim.
- Attempt the Ominous branch. When you are equipped for greater pressure, challenge Ominous Trial Spawners for a chance at Ominous Trial Keys.
- Reach an Ominous Vault. Use the Ominous key for the stronger or exclusive reward pool, again observing the one-claim-per-player rule.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Expecting a craftable block: Vaults and Trial Spawners are structure content. Neither can be crafted or acquired as a Survival item through ordinary mining.
- Assuming a Vault is single-use for the whole server: It is single-use per player, not per Vault globally. Teammates can claim their own rewards from the same block.
- Using the wrong key: Trial Keys open standard Vaults; Ominous Trial Keys are for Ominous Vaults.
- Waiting for another wave during cooldown: A completed Trial Spawner has a 30-minute cooldown and will not spawn during it.
- Bringing every player into range automatically: Each additional nearby eligible player raises the challenge level. Decide whether the extra rewards and shared damage capacity justify the higher pressure.
- Relying on natural mob farms inside the structure: Natural spawning is disabled in Trial Chambers, so ordinary spawn-proofing assumptions do not describe the chamber’s combat behavior.
- Treating Java and Bedrock loot as permanently identical: The official 1.21 notes are edition-specific, and later patches can revise reward tables. Check the notes for the edition and version you are actually playing.
Java and Bedrock version notes
The core structure and progression described here are documented for the 1.21 era in both editions, but some details are explicitly edition-specific. The 30-minute Trial Spawner cooldown is stated in the Java Edition 1.21 release notes. The 30% Ominous Trial Key chance and the finalized standard-Vault exclusives are stated in Bedrock Edition 1.21 notes. If a later update changes a loot table, key chance or room behavior, the newer edition notes take precedence over these 1.21 values.
