For a small vanilla Java server, begin with about 4 GB of VPS RAM, a modern CPU with strong single-thread performance, SSD or NVMe storage, a public IP address with the Minecraft port open, and control over the required Java runtime. Move to 6–8 GB for more players or plugins, and 8–12 GB or more for modpacks. These are practical starting points rather than official player limits: workload, world generation, simulation distance, and software configuration determine the real requirement.
Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Java servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
Server requirements are not the same as Minecraft client requirements
A VPS runs the dedicated server, usually without a monitor or graphics card. It does not need to render 3D frames for a player. The processor, memory, storage, Java runtime, and network configuration matter far more than gaming-GPU specifications.

Mojang’s July 21, 2026 Java client update lists 1080p at 30 frames per second as a minimum target with 8 GB of system RAM and a four-core processor, or 12 GB with integrated graphics. Its 1080p/60 FPS recommendation lists 16 GB of RAM. Those figures describe the computer running the game client and rendering the world. They are not a formula for sizing a headless VPS.
A server has a different workload: it advances the game simulation, loads and generates chunks, tracks entities and redstone, processes player actions, saves the world, and sends state to connected clients. A player with a powerful gaming PC can still experience lag when the server’s main tick thread is starved of CPU time or memory.

How much RAM does a Minecraft VPS need?
Use RAM tiers as starting points, then measure the running workload. There is no official universal relationship such as “one gigabyte per ten players.” Modpacks, plugins, world size, entity counts, chunk generation, and view or simulation distance can change usage substantially.
| Workload | Practical starting VPS | Typical reasons to upgrade |
|---|---|---|
| Small vanilla Java, about 1–5 active players | 4 GB RAM; two vCPUs or an equivalent allocation; modern high-single-thread CPU; SSD/NVMe | Exploration-heavy generation, larger view or simulation distance, and backups |
| Vanilla or light plugins, about 5–15 players | 6 GB RAM with a strong CPU allocation and fast SSD/NVMe | Entity farms, redstone, higher distances, and simultaneous chunk generation |
| Modpack or plugin-heavy, about 10–20 players | 8–12 GB RAM, high single-thread performance plus additional cores for supporting work, NVMe | Large modpack footprint, pregeneration, many entities, frequent saves, and JVM overhead |
| Larger community or multiple worlds | 12–16 GB or more, dedicated or high-priority CPU, NVMe, automated backups, and monitoring | Concurrent worlds, proxy or cross-play layers, bursts of players, and uptime requirements |
The figures in this table are engineering planning ranges, not Mojang-certified limits. Test with the exact server software, world, mods, and player behavior you expect. A lightly used 4 GB server can be healthy, while a poorly configured 8 GB server can still stutter.
Reserve memory outside the Java heap
The amount advertised by a VPS is not the amount you should assign to -Xmx. Leave room for the operating system, Java’s native memory, the JVM itself, monitoring agents, a control panel, backup processes, and filesystem cache. Allocating every available gigabyte can cause swapping, crashes, lag, or stuttering.
Minecraft Help specifically warns that mismatched allocation can produce those symptoms. It recommends 2 GB of allocation on computers with 4 GB or less total RAM and says systems with 8 GB or more can increase allocation for better performance. A VPS with 4 GB total memory therefore needs a deliberately sized heap rather than an automatic “use it all” setting.
CPU: prioritize fast cores over a large vCPU number
Minecraft’s main simulation tick is sensitive to per-core performance. Prefer a current-generation processor with high clock speed and strong instructions-per-cycle performance, and avoid plans whose physical CPU is heavily oversold. Four slow or contended vCPUs can perform worse than two consistently available, fast cores for a small server.

Extra cores still have value. They give the operating system, networking, saves, compression, backups, map rendering, and other services somewhere to run while the main tick thread works. They do not replace a fast main thread, however. When comparing VPS plans, ask whether CPU is dedicated, high-priority, or subject to aggressive contention, and monitor CPU steal time after deployment.

- Tick time rises during exploration or when several players load new chunks.
- Lag appears even though heap usage is comfortable and no swapping occurs.
- CPU steal time increases when neighboring tenants become busy.
- Backups, pregeneration, or map tools make gameplay hitch because they compete with the main thread.
Do not infer capacity from the number of advertised cores alone. Run a representative test with the intended world, distances, farms, and player count.
Storage: SSD or NVMe with room for growth
Choose SSD storage at minimum; NVMe is preferable when the budget and host support it. The server repeatedly reads and writes region files, player data, logs, plugin data, and backups. Fast storage helps chunk loading, world saves, startup, and recovery, although it cannot compensate for an underpowered CPU.
Capacity must cover more than the initial server download. Reserve space for the world as it expands, logs, map images, mod and plugin files, temporary archives, and several backup generations. Keep meaningful free space rather than running the filesystem at its limit.
Mojang’s Bedrock Dedicated Server page lists a package footprint of roughly 180 MB to 1 GB, depending on platform and release. That is an installation figure, not a recommendation for the capacity of a growing Java world or its backups.

Java versions and server software compatibility
Confirm the Java version before purchasing a VPS. Mojang’s Java server software is free and requires a compatible Java installation or JRE. The exact server build, not the VPS brand, determines which runtime is valid.
Paper’s current compatibility matrix lists Java 21 for Paper 1.20 through 1.21.11 and Java 25 for Paper 26.1 and later; its documentation states that Paper requires at least Java 25 to run. If you select a 26.1 or newer Paper build, a host limited to Java 21 is unsuitable. Conversely, changing Java without checking the server version can prevent startup or introduce unsupported behavior.
Example Paper launch command
Paper’s example command is:
java -Xms4G -Xmx4G -jar paper.jar --nogui
This demonstrates the syntax, not a universal allocation. Set -Xms and -Xmx deliberately after accounting for total VPS memory and the workload. Keeping them equal can make heap sizing predictable, but the values still need to leave operating-system headroom.
Network, address, and port requirements
Outside players need a stable public address and a route through the VPS firewall. Mojang’s server guidance notes that firewall or port-forwarding configuration may be required for external connections. On a VPS, that normally means allowing the configured game port in both the host’s network firewall and any operating-system firewall you control.

A connection failure can be caused by a closed firewall rule, an incorrect address, a service listening on a different port, or a server that has not finished starting.

Choose a region close to most players and test routing at busy times when possible. Latency is separate from server tick performance: a fast CPU cannot eliminate delay caused by a distant region or congested route. Check the host’s DDoS and traffic policies, public IPv4 availability, firewall controls, and whether the intended mods, plugins, backups, and traffic pattern are permitted.
Java server settings that change resource needs
Paper documents these defaults:
| Setting | Default | What it affects |
|---|---|---|
max-players |
20 | The configured player ceiling, not a guarantee that the VPS can sustain 20 players. |
server-port |
25565 | The TCP port clients use unless you configure another value. |
simulation-distance |
10 | How far active game simulation is maintained; higher values increase CPU work. |
view-distance |
10 | How much world data is sent and maintained around players; higher values increase chunk and network pressure. |
entity-broadcast-range-percentage |
100 | How far entities are sent to clients; changing it can influence perceived lag and traffic. |
Start with conservative distances and raise them only after checking tick time, heap use, CPU, and network saturation. A nominal player count says little if those players are spread across unexplored terrain, operating entity farms, or generating chunks simultaneously.

How to compare VPS offers before you deploy
- Verify the JDK. Confirm that the host lets you install or select Java 21 for Paper 1.20–1.21.11 or Java 25 for Paper 26.1 and newer.
- Check CPU quality and contention. Ask what processor family backs the plan, whether cores are dedicated or high priority, and how CPU steal is handled.
- Calculate real RAM headroom. Subtract the operating system, JVM native memory, monitoring, panels, backups, and other services before choosing the heap.
- Inspect storage. Confirm SSD or NVMe, usable capacity, performance policy, and enough room for worlds, logs, mods, and multiple backups.
- Confirm connectivity controls. Require a public address, configurable firewall, and permission to open the server’s configured port.
- Read the backup terms. Check frequency, retention, restore procedure, and whether copies are kept off the VPS.
- Evaluate region and routing. Select a location near the player base and test latency rather than relying solely on a marketing region label.
- Check policy and support. Ensure mods, plugins, automated backups, and the expected traffic are allowed, and verify that support can help with network or storage incidents.
No provider, price, commission, or affiliate availability is established here. Compare the technical characteristics above rather than choosing solely by advertised RAM or vCPU count.
Java VPS setup checklist
- Choose the server build and Java version together. Record the exact Paper or other server release, then install its supported JDK.
- Install the server files on SSD or NVMe. Keep the world directory, logs, and configuration in a location included in your backup plan.
- Set a deliberate heap. Use
-Xmsand-Xmxvalues that leave room for the OS and services; do not copy the Paper example unchanged unless the VPS can support it. - Accept the EULA and start once. The first launch creates configuration files. Stop the server cleanly before editing settings.
- Configure networking. Set
server-port, allow that port through the VPS and operating-system firewalls, and confirm the process is listening on the expected address. - Set distances conservatively. Keep
view-distanceandsimulation-distanceat manageable values, then increase them in small steps while monitoring. - Schedule off-server backups. Test a restore before trusting the schedule, and take a fresh backup before changing Java, Paper, mods, or plugins.
- Monitor continuously. Track tick time, heap usage, CPU utilization and steal, disk latency, and network saturation during real play.
Bedrock Dedicated Server has separate requirements
Do not apply Java server assumptions to Bedrock. Mojang’s Bedrock Dedicated Server page lists an Intel Core i3-3210 or AMD A8-7600-equivalent processor, 4 GB of RAM, and approximately 180 MB to 1 GB of storage for the software. Its Linux requirement is Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or newer; its Windows requirement is Windows 10 build 15063 or newer or Windows Server 2016 or newer. Broadband connectivity is also listed.
Those are baseline requirements for the Bedrock software, not a promise of a particular player count. Mojang notes that larger worlds and more players require additional resources. Add headroom for the world, backups, monitoring, and any other services on the VPS, and verify that the host supports the required operating system.

Common sizing mistakes and fixes
Using client specifications to size the VPS
A gaming PC’s graphics-memory and frame-rate requirements do not describe a headless server. Size for simulation, chunk work, storage, and networking instead.
Allocating all RAM to -Xmx
This leaves no safe margin for the OS or JVM native memory. Lower the heap or move to a larger plan, then watch for swapping and crashes.
Buying many slow or oversold vCPUs
More listed cores cannot correct a weak main tick thread. Choose higher per-core performance and verify CPU steal under load.
Ignoring Java compatibility
Check the server’s release matrix first. Paper 1.20–1.21.11 uses Java 21, while Paper 26.1 and later uses Java 25 according to the current Paper documentation.
Raising distances before measuring
Higher view and simulation distances increase work. Change one setting at a time and revert it if tick time, memory, or network pressure becomes unstable.

How many players can a 4 GB VPS handle?
A 4 GB VPS is a sensible starting point for a small vanilla Java server of roughly 1–5 active players when paired with a fast CPU, SSD/NVMe, conservative settings, and adequate headroom. That range is not a hard limit. A compact world with light activity may be comfortable, while exploration, farms, high distances, or plugins can exceed the same plan quickly.
For approximately 5–15 players, 6 GB provides a more practical margin. Modpacks or plugin-heavy servers aimed at 10–20 players generally warrant 8–12 GB and stronger CPU allocation. Larger communities or multiple worlds should plan for 12–16 GB or more, monitoring, automated backups, and potentially separate proxy or database services. Validate any estimate with the actual software and a representative workload.
Quick Recap
Decision summary
- Choose 4 GB for a small, mostly vanilla Java server and leave non-heap memory available.
- Choose 6 GB when a vanilla server adds several players, plugins, entities, or higher distances.
- Choose 8–12 GB for modpacks or plugin-heavy workloads, while prioritizing CPU quality and NVMe.
- Choose 12–16 GB or more for multiple worlds, larger communities, peak bursts, and supporting services.
- In every tier, confirm the correct Java version, public address, firewall and port access, backup plan, region, and CPU contention policy.
