Minecraft weather is controlled with slash commands. The three states are clear, rain and thunder; you need cheats, commands or server permission enabled before the game will accept them. Bedrock uses game ticks for an optional duration, while Java and Bedrock can differ in how they parse command arguments.

Weather is a world-level setting rather than a player effect. It changes the sky and precipitation for the world, so every player in that world sees the resulting conditions. The command names are the same in both major editions, but the visual result depends on the biome.

That biome conversion is why two players can use the same weather command and report different-looking results. A rain command in a snowy or otherwise cold biome is not failing; it is being rendered as snow. Thunder in a cold biome is rendered as a blizzard rather than visible rain and conventional lightning.

Minecraft’s official guide describes slash commands as a way to change world conditions, including weather. Weather commands do not require a physical item, block or paid add-on.
Core weather commands
Enter these in the in-game chat with a leading slash. The command reference below separates the shared commands from Bedrock-specific syntax.

If the game marks a command as unknown, use the chat autocomplete after typing /weather. Autocomplete exposes the arguments available in your edition and version instead of relying on syntax copied from a different edition.
Enable permission to use weather commands
A correct command still fails when the world or server does not grant command permission. The setting has a different name in Bedrock and Java.
Bedrock single-player worlds
- Open the world list and select the pencil-shaped Edit control for the world.
- Open Game settings.
- Turn on Allow Cheats.
- Load the world and open chat.
- Enter a weather command beginning with
/, then submit it.
Bedrock displays a permanent consequence for this choice: enabling cheats in a single-player world permanently disables achievement unlocking for that world, even if you later switch cheats off. Decide before enabling the setting if achievements matter to that save. This restriction applies to the world, not merely to the current session.

Java single-player worlds
- When creating a world, open the world options and set Allow Commands to On.
- For an existing single-player world, open the pause menu and use the world-options control that enables commands.
- Return to the world, open chat and run the weather command.
The exact menu wording can vary with the Java release, but the permission concept is the same: commands must be enabled for that world. If the option is unavailable, check that you are editing the world rather than only changing video or difficulty settings.
Servers and Realms
In multiplayer, the host or administrator must grant a sufficient operator or permission level. A regular player can see the chat box and still receive a “no permission” or “unknown command” response. Ask the owner to grant the appropriate command permission or to run the command themselves. Do not assume that being able to join a Realm or server gives weather-control access.
Durations, game ticks and the automatic weather cycle
On Bedrock, the optional duration is measured in game ticks. Microsoft Learn’s command documentation defines 20 game ticks as one second. Converting a desired duration is therefore a simple multiplication:
- 10 seconds = 200 ticks
- 30 seconds = 600 ticks
- 5 minutes = 6,000 ticks
- 10 minutes = 12,000 ticks
The documented Bedrock example /weather thunder 600 therefore requests 30 seconds of thunder. When the duration is omitted, Bedrock uses a random duration between 300 and 900 seconds, according to Microsoft Learn’s current Bedrock documentation. That range is why a command without a number can end sooner or last longer than expected.
Java and Bedrock share the weather command name, but duration parsing and permission labels can differ. Treat an example as edition-specific unless the game’s autocomplete confirms it. If you are writing a command block or server function, test it in the same edition and release used by the world.

Keep the weather from changing back
A timed weather command can be overridden by the world’s normal weather cycle. In Bedrock, Microsoft’s popular-commands documentation recommends disabling that cycle when you need a selected duration to be respected.
- Open chat and run
/gamerule doweathercycle false. - Apply the weather and duration you want. For example,
/weather clear 6000requests five minutes of clear weather in Bedrock. - Leave the gamerule disabled while you need the forecast held steady.
- When normal weather changes should resume, run
/gamerule doweathercycle trueif that gamerule is supported by your edition.
The same method applies to rain or thunder: disable the cycle first, then use the corresponding weather type and duration. A locked cycle is different from a long duration. The duration controls the selected state; the gamerule prevents the ordinary automatic cycle from replacing it.
Java and Bedrock: what actually differs

The safest cross-edition habit is to identify the edition first, enable its permission setting, and let the command suggestions fill in optional arguments. Do not paste a Bedrock tick value into a Java command and assume the timing will match.
Troubleshooting: when a weather command does not work
“You do not have permission” or no response
Check the world permission before changing the command. Bedrock single-player needs Allow Cheats; Java single-player needs Allow Commands. On a server or Realm, ask for operator or equivalent permission. Re-typing the same command without changing permission will not solve this failure.
“Unknown command” or an argument error
Confirm the leading slash and spelling, then type /weather and inspect the suggestions. The base command is shared, but optional arguments and query support are not identical in every edition. Remove the duration temporarily and test the basic weather state; if that works, add arguments one at a time.

The command succeeds, but rain is not visible
Look at the biome. In a cold biome, the rain state appears as snow. If you used thunder there, the game presents a blizzard-like storm rather than ordinary rain. Travel to a warmer biome only if you specifically need rain visuals.
The weather changes again before the requested time
The automatic cycle is probably still active. In Bedrock, set doweathercycle to false before applying the timed weather command. If another administrator, command block or server plug-in controls the gamerule, it can change the forecast again after your command.

A duration lasts longer or shorter than expected
On Bedrock, convert seconds to ticks using 20 ticks per second and remember that an omitted duration is random between 300 and 900 seconds. A value copied from a Java tutorial may use different parsing. Check the edition, release and autocomplete output before recalculating.
Achievements disappeared from the world
That is expected after enabling Bedrock’s Allow Cheats in a single-player world. Turning the setting off later does not restore achievement unlocking for that world. If achievements are important, make a separate test world for command experiments.
Weather appears unchanged after using clear
Allow a moment for the visual transition and check whether you are seeing a biome-specific effect, particles from another source or a client-side visual issue. Run the command again with permission confirmed, then use the Bedrock query command to check the reported state. If the query says the state is clear while precipitation remains visible, investigate resource packs, shaders or server-side systems rather than the weather command itself.

Practical weather workflows
Make a building session dry
Enable the appropriate command permission, set the weather to clear, and disable the automatic cycle if rain repeatedly interrupts construction. This keeps the sky stable while you work. Re-enable the cycle afterward if the world should return to its normal changing weather.
Create a controlled storm demonstration
Use a test world or a copy of the save, especially in Bedrock where enabling cheats removes achievements. Choose a non-cold biome if you want to show rain and visible lightning rather than snow or a blizzard. Apply a short tick duration so the demonstration ends without leaving the world permanently stormy.
Check a command-driven map
First verify that the map’s command blocks or functions are not writing the weather gamerule. Then set the desired state, lock the cycle only when the map design calls for a fixed forecast, and restore the gamerule before handing the world back to ordinary play.
Confirm what the game believes
Bedrock players can run /weather query after a change to obtain the reported state. This distinguishes a permission or syntax failure from a visual difference caused by a cold biome. Java players should use that edition’s command help and autocomplete rather than assuming Bedrock’s query form exists.
