Use a cartographer’s woodland explorer map to find a woodland mansion in survival, or run /locate structure minecraft:mansion when commands are enabled. Before entering, establish a camp with a bed and storage, bring a shield, water, food, light, melee and ranged weapons, then clear the building room by room. Evokers are the priority target: they summon vexes and evoker fangs, and defeating one can provide a totem of undying.

What a woodland mansion is—and why it is dangerous

A woodland mansion is a large, procedurally generated Overworld structure associated with dark forest biomes. It is built as a maze of corridors and rooms rather than as one open arena. Hostile illagers can occupy rooms, hidden sections and upper floors, so entering the front door does not mean you have found every threat.

Minecraft Help identifies evokers, vindicators, allays and totems of undying among the mansion’s notable inhabitants and rewards. The structure is not a formal raid event: no raid bar or raid wave system starts merely because you walk inside. It is better understood as a generated dungeon containing illagers and variable room loot.

The two enemies that make a first expedition dangerous are vindicators and evokers. Vindicators use axes at close range, while evokers attack from a distance by creating evoker fangs and summoning vexes. Vexes fly, can approach from unexpected angles and can pass through walls, so simply sealing a doorway does not guarantee safety.

“Succeed in defeating an evoker and you’ll get a totem of undying – an extremely handy relic that springs into action when you receive fatal damage to grant you a last-minute reprieve.”

— Minecraft’s official evoker description

Choose how you will find the mansion

Decide whether you are playing a no-command survival world, a world where commands are enabled, or a world in which external seed tools are acceptable. The choice changes how much exploration and preparation the journey requires. Map trades and command behavior can differ between Java Edition, Bedrock Edition and game versions, so check the edition and version of your world before relying on a particular result.

Approach How it works Strength Trade-off
Woodland explorer map Trade with a cartographer villager and follow the map’s mansion icon. Normal survival progression; no commands required. Requires villager trading and a potentially long journey. Trade availability and map behavior vary by edition and version.
/locate structure minecraft:mansion Run the locate command with commands enabled to receive coordinates. Fast and precise. Not available in an ordinary no-cheat survival world; syntax and permissions depend on edition and version.
External seed or map tools Use a tool that reads your world seed to predict structure locations. Can reduce travel and planning time. Outside the game’s normal survival loop and dependent on the tool supporting your exact edition and version.

Finding a mansion with a woodland explorer map

1. Locate or create a cartographer

In survival, the woodland explorer map is the standard non-cheat route. Find a cartographer villager or assign an unemployed villager the cartography-table profession. Raise the villager’s trading level until an explorer-map trade becomes available. The exact trade tier, emerald cost and map behavior are edition- and version-dependent, so do not assume that every cartographer offers the same map at the same level.

2. Secure the map before leaving

Buy the woodland explorer map and make a copy or screenshot of its destination if you can. Keep a normal map or coordinate notes for the route home. Explorer maps are valuable navigation items; store irreplaceable gear and spare valuables at your base before starting the final travel leg.

3. Read the map correctly

Your marker indicates your position relative to the map’s displayed area. A mansion icon shows the target, not necessarily a straight-line route through safe terrain. Travel around oceans, cliffs and hostile areas instead of burning food and durability by forcing a direct path. Mansion spacing and travel distance depend on the generated world seed, so no fixed number of blocks from spawn is reliable.

4. Establish the destination approach

When the marker nears the mansion icon, stop at a defensible location rather than charging directly into the building. Make a visible trail with torches or distinctive blocks, and reserve enough food and tools for the return trip. A mansion can be far enough from your base that dying inside and respawning without a local camp turns a manageable fight into a second expedition.

Finding one with /locate

With commands enabled and the appropriate permissions, use:

/locate structure minecraft:mansion

The command returns coordinates for a mansion in the generated world. Teleporting directly to those coordinates is possible only if your edition and permissions allow it, but even when you travel normally, the coordinates give you a precise destination. Command syntax, namespace requirements and output formatting can change between Java Edition and Bedrock Edition releases; if the command is rejected, use the structure suggestions shown by your game’s command autocomplete and verify that cheats or operator permissions are enabled.

Using /locate does not make the mansion safe. It only removes the search problem. You still need a route, a camp, light and a plan for the illagers inside.

Prepare before you leave the mansion entrance

Item or preparation Why it matters Practical advice
Shield Blocks many incoming attacks and gives you a controlled way to approach vindicators. Carry a spare if possible. A vindicator’s axe attack can disable a shield, so blocking is not complete protection.
Strong melee weapon Finishes vindicators and other mobs at close range. Use your best available sword or axe and bring durability reserves.
Bow or crossbow with ammunition Lets you damage evokers before their summons multiply the fight. Keep the ranged weapon on your hotbar and use doorways or corners as cover.
Water bucket Controls emergencies, reduces fall risk and can create space while retreating. Do not place water blindly in a cramped room where it can obstruct your movement.
Food Restores hunger so health can regenerate and sprinting remains available. Carry more than the amount needed for the approach; combat and detours consume it quickly.
Torches or another light source Reveals rooms, limits new hostile spawns in areas you have secured and prevents getting lost. Use a consistent placement rule, such as torches on the right wall while entering.
Spare pickaxe and building blocks Allows emergency escape, barricades, bridges and repairs to blocked routes. Use blocks to shape sightlines, not to assume vexes can be contained by a wall.
Bed Sets a nearby respawn point and reduces the cost of death. Place it in an outside camp, not in an uncleared room.
Storage or an ender chest Protects maps, trophies and spare equipment while you make repeated pushes. Keep the explorer map and irreplaceable items stored before the final entry when possible.

Build a recovery camp outside

Make a small fenced or well-lit camp a short distance from the entrance before you begin clearing. Put the bed inside, add a chest or other storage, and leave spare food, blocks, weapons and tools there. Mark the route from the camp to the mansion with lights that remain visible at night.

Use the camp as a staging point rather than a place to fight. If you die, you can re-equip and return without repeating the entire journey from your base. Store the explorer map and any valuable items before the final push, but leave enough basic gear at the camp to recover a dropped inventory.

Enter and clear the mansion room by room

1. Control the first doorway

Open the entrance from a position where you can retreat. Do not sprint through the lobby. Place light near the threshold, identify side doors and keep the route to your camp visible. If several mobs move at once, back through the doorway and fight in the open area you prepared rather than allowing yourself to be surrounded in a corridor.

2. Use a repeatable marking system

Mark every corridor you have cleared. Torches on one side of the wall, signs, buttons or distinctive blocks all work; choose one system and use it consistently. Mark unexplored doors differently from cleared rooms. This prevents circular searches and gives you a known retreat route when vexes appear.

3. Light before looting

Remove hostile mobs and light the room before opening chests or collecting decorative blocks. A room that looks empty can contain a hidden corner, a balcony or a connecting door. Lighting first also makes it easier to see vexes and evoker fangs during the next engagement.

4. Keep one escape route open

Never block every exit while building a barricade. Leave a doorway or corridor behind you, and know which turn leads back outside. Walls and doorframes are useful for breaking a vindicator’s charge and limiting an evoker’s line of sight, but they are not a complete answer to vexes, which can pass through walls.

How to fight vindicators, evokers and vexes

Vindicators: close-range axe attackers

Vindicators are most dangerous when they reach you in a narrow corridor. Keep your shield ready while closing distance, then attack during the opening after their swing. Because an axe can disable a shield, do not stand still and hold block indefinitely. Step backward into a wider area, use a doorway to limit how many can reach you, and switch to a ranged weapon if more than one vindicator enters the same lane.

Evokers: the first target in a mixed room

Evokers create evoker fangs along the ground and summon vexes. The official Minecraft description and the Minecraft Wiki tutorial both emphasize the danger of allowing an evoker to continue casting. Open with arrows or crossbow shots from cover, then close only when the fang pattern has ended. If an evoker shares a room with vindicators, do not spend your first attack on a nearby minion while the caster remains active; removing the evoker stops new summons.

Evoker fangs: read the floor

Fangs are a ground hazard, so watch the floor as carefully as the mob itself. Keep moving sideways or retreat through a doorway when the evoker begins its casting animation. Do not chase a low-health evoker across a line of fangs. Wait for a safe opening, then finish it with a ranged shot or a short melee push.

Vexes: airborne threats that ignore ordinary walls

Vexes can attack from above, behind you and through walls. When they appear, stop looting and move toward your prepared retreat route. Use open space to see their approach, swing only when they commit to a pass, and keep your shield and food accessible. A one-block barricade may delay other mobs but should not be treated as a vex-proof room. If the fight becomes chaotic, retreat outside, heal, and re-enter after the summoned attackers are dealt with.

A reliable clearing sequence

  1. Mark the entrance. Place lights and a distinctive block so the outside route remains obvious.
  2. Choose one wing or floor. Do not open doors randomly on multiple levels; a contained area is easier to recover if you die.
  3. Scout from a doorway. Look for movement, balconies and side doors before crossing the room.
  4. Target an evoker immediately. Use ranged attacks and cover; avoid stepping into active fang lines.
  5. Separate vindicators. Pull them toward a doorway or wider room where only one can reach you at a time.
  6. Check corners and upper spaces. Mansions contain varied room shapes, and a cleared floor is not proof that an adjacent balcony is safe.
  7. Light and mark the room. Only after hostile mobs are gone should you collect loot.
  8. Return to the camp when supplies fall. A controlled resupply is safer than gambling on one last room with a damaged shield or empty quiver.

Use a totem of undying correctly

An evoker can drop a totem of undying. The totem only protects you when it is held in your hand, specifically the off-hand according to the official description; carrying it in your inventory is not enough. Once you secure one, place it in the off-hand before continuing into rooms where another evoker or a group of vindicators could deal fatal damage.

A totem is a last-minute reprieve, not extra health or immunity. It does not prevent the attack that triggers it, and it does not make reckless exploration safe. Keep food ready so you can recover after the totem activates, then retreat to the camp if the room is still occupied.

What you can expect to find

The most important predictable reward is the totem of undying from an evoker. Minecraft Help also identifies allays and mansion loot as notable discoveries. Room layouts and chest contents can vary with game version, so treat individual rooms as examples rather than expecting a fixed inventory or a guaranteed list of items in a particular location.

Allays are useful discoveries, but securing them is a separate task from surviving the initial clear. Finish the surrounding room, light the route and ensure you can escort or transport them without reopening an uncleared section.

Compare travel and combat choices before the expedition

Decision Safer default When the alternative makes sense
Locating method Cartographer woodland explorer map Use /locate when commands are enabled and speed matters; use a seed tool only if it fits your world’s rules.
Travel speed Ordinary overworld travel with a marked route Late-game elytra and rockets reduce exposure and return time, but you still need a landing and recovery plan.
Combat opening Ranged shots at an evoker from cover, followed by controlled melee Shield-and-melee is workable when terrain is open and only one close-range attacker can reach you.
Recovery Camp with bed, storage and spare equipment outside Direct entry is reasonable only when the mansion is close to a secure base and you can replace lost gear quickly.

Common failures and how to recover

You cannot find a mansion from the map

Confirm that the map is a woodland explorer map rather than another explorer-map type, and check the marker’s movement relative to the mansion icon. If the marker barely moves, you may be traveling across the wrong axis or around an obstacle. Mansion location and distance are seed-dependent, so a long journey is not evidence that the map is broken.

The /locate command is rejected

Check that commands or cheats are enabled and that you have operator permission. Verify your edition and version’s autocomplete suggestions; structure namespaces and command syntax are not identical across every release. If commands are unavailable, return to the cartographer route instead of trying random command variants.

Vexes overwhelm the entrance

Retreat along the marked route to the camp, heal and wait for a clear opening. Do not seal yourself into a tiny box and assume the vexes cannot reach you. Re-enter with a ranged weapon ready, remove the evoker first, and keep the camp stocked for another attempt.

You die with the map and equipment inside

Respawn at the camp if possible, take the spare kit and return immediately while the dropped-item timer remains relevant. If the camp was not established, rebuild a basic kit at your main base and use coordinates, landmarks or a copied map to retrace the route. This recovery cost is why storing irreplaceable items before the final push matters.

Edition and version cautions

Java Edition and Bedrock Edition can differ in villager trade presentation, command details, combat feel and loot behavior. Updates can also alter room generation or the way maps and structures are displayed. State your edition when asking for help, and verify mechanics in the version you actually play rather than relying on a guide written for an older release.

Do not promise a fixed mansion distance, a universal room layout or an identical chest inventory. The generated seed and game version determine the route and many details of what you encounter.

Optional preparation reference

Minecraft: Guide to Survival (Updated), credited to Mojang AB and The Official Minecraft Team, is a 96-page hardcover released October 4, 2022. Its coverage of resources, equipment, hostile mobs and general survival can help a newer player prepare for an expedition, although it is not a mansion-specific map and does not replace edition-specific mechanics in your current game.

Final expedition checklist

  • Confirm your edition, version and chosen locating method.
  • Carry the explorer map or record the coordinates before leaving.
  • Bring a shield, spare weapon or shield if available, melee weapon, bow or crossbow, ammunition, food, torches, water, blocks and a pickaxe.
  • Build a lit, fenced camp with a bed and storage outside the entrance.
  • Mark the route and clear one room or corridor at a time.
  • Focus every evoker before looting; avoid active fang lines and prepare for vexes.
  • Put a recovered totem in your off-hand before entering the next dangerous section.
  • Return to camp when supplies or durability are low instead of forcing a final room.

With the mansion located, the camp established and evokers removed first, the structure becomes a controlled series of fights rather than a blind rush. The explorer map gets you there; disciplined room-by-room clearing is what lets you leave with the totems and other rewards.
