The best Minecraft XP farm depends on your edition, version, and progression stage. For early survival, convert a nearby zombie or skeleton spawner into a manual-kill farm. For a general-purpose build, use a dark-room mob farm—but expect different results on Java and Bedrock. Java players commonly move to gold or Enderman farms for rapid XP, while Bedrock gold farms use a different portal-based design. No single XP farm works identically in every Minecraft version and edition, so always match a build to your exact release.
Java and Bedrock differ in mob spawning, entity behavior, redstone, portal mechanics, killing systems, and XP-orb timing. Check the official Java and Bedrock comparison before copying a design between editions.

Which XP method should you use?

Rates should not be treated as universal benchmarks. They vary with version, edition, player and simulation distance, mob-cap competition, design, killing method, and whether a guide reports XP points or player levels. The Minecraft Wiki’s experience-farming tutorial is itself marked as a work in progress.
1. Build a zombie or skeleton spawner farm early
A naturally generated spawner is often the best first XP project because the game has already supplied the difficult spawning infrastructure. Contain the mobs, move them into a collection chamber, weaken them, and kill them yourself so you receive the XP and drops.

Spawner farms are generally slower for XP than advanced farms, but they are useful for bones, arrows, rotten flesh, and other drops. A normal spawner only operates when you remain within its activation range. If it works beside the spawner but stops from an AFK platform, distance is the first thing to check.
Spawner-farm checklist
- Keep the player close enough for the spawner to remain active.
- Remove mobs quickly. Mobs trapped in side rooms, caves, or the transport system can fill the local valid-mob area and stop new spawning.
- Seal gaps that baby zombies can use. They are shorter and faster than adult zombies.
- Make the final chamber safe to stand in while manually killing mobs.
- Do not plan to move the spawner: Silk Touch cannot obtain a normal spawner in Survival.
For detailed layouts, use a version-labeled spawner-trap design rather than assuming a Java tutorial will behave the same in Bedrock.

A dark-room farm funnels hostile mobs from unlit platforms into a drop or kill chamber. It can provide XP alongside bones, arrows, gunpowder, string, and other drops. The exact platform, flushing, fall, and killing mechanisms must be selected for your edition and version.
Surface towers have an important weakness: at night, nearby caves and other dark terrain become competing spawn locations. That divides the hostile-mob spawning capacity and reduces the tower’s share. A surface tower therefore does not have the same output day and night. Clearing or lighting competing areas, or choosing a design and location that limits them, matters more than simply making the tower taller.

Do not copy a claimed XP-per-hour number without checking its assumptions. A farm’s output can change when mobs die outside the chamber, when the player stands at the wrong distance, or when the edition uses different spawning and entity rules.
3. Java gold farms: powerful, but edition-specific
Common Java gold farms use magma-block spawning platforms in the Nether. Depending on the design, zombified piglins are attracted toward a killing area, take fall damage, or are brought to a chamber for manual finishing. These farms can provide rapid XP and gold, but the design must be labeled for the Java release it targets.
A Java magma-platform gold farm is not automatically a Bedrock build. Bedrock commonly uses repeatedly destroyed and relit obsidian Nether portals to spawn zombified piglins, which are then transported to a killing chamber. Treat these as separate farm families, not interchangeable schematics.
4. Enderman farms for rapid Java XP
Enderman farms are commonly used for fast XP in Java Edition, especially after reaching the End. Their precise construction and performance depend on the Java release and the chosen design, so use a current, version-specific blueprint. Do not present one Enderman layout or rate as unchanged across all Java releases, and do not assume it works on Bedrock.

5. Guardian farms for endgame projects
Guardian farms are large endgame builds based on ocean-monument spawning mechanics. They can combine substantial XP with prismarine and sea-lantern drops, but monument preparation, water handling, guardian transport, and kill chambers are highly design-specific. Choose a blueprint explicitly marked for your edition and version rather than relying on a universal guardian-farm claim.
6. Trading: convenient XP, not an unlimited farm
Trading is excellent for repairing Mending equipment while obtaining useful items. Each villager trade grants an average of 4.5 XP, and a villager can grant an additional 5 XP when willing to breed. Trades can become locked, however, so trading is not a permanently unlimited XP source by itself. It works best as a repeatable convenience method alongside a real mob or resource farm.

Furnaces store the experience produced by smelting until the player collects the finished result. If hoppers automatically remove every output, the XP can remain stored instead of appearing continuously in your experience bar. To recover stored XP, let the furnace smelt another item and manually take the result from the furnace interface.
The retrieved farming reference reports approximate single-furnace figures of 360 XP per real-time hour from cactus, 252 XP per hour from potatoes, and 72 XP per hour from kelp under its stated assumptions. These are edition-labeled examples, not universal rates: Bedrock cactus XP is reported as substantially lower than Java cactus XP.

8. Bottles o’ Enchanting
A Bottle o’ Enchanting yields an average of 7 XP, or approximately 448 XP for a full stack. Clerics can sell them, but buying bottles requires resources and is normally less economical as a continuous XP farm than producing XP through mobs, trading, or a properly designed resource system.
Trial Spawners are not permanent XP farms
Trial Spawners, introduced with Trial Chambers, should not be confused with normal spawners. They produce a limited number of persistent mobs based on their challenge level. After all spawned mobs are defeated and rewards are ejected, the Trial Spawner enters a 30-minute cooldown.
They can spawn mobs regardless of the normal light-level requirement, so darkening a Trial Chamber does not turn it into a conventional dark-room farm. The challenge level increases when the spawner notices additional nearby players in line of sight; players in Creative or Spectator mode are ignored. Trial Spawners are useful combat encounters and burst XP sources, not continuously renewable spawners. See the official Minecraft 1.21 Bedrock changelog for the documented mechanics.

In Bedrock 1.21, defeating a Raid Captain outside a raid no longer automatically gives Bad Omen. Players obtain the effect by consuming an Ominous Bottle. Entering a village also no longer starts a raid immediately: Bad Omen becomes Raid Omen for 30 seconds, and the raid begins when that effect expires at the location where it was received. Drinking milk during this period clears Raid Omen and prevents the raid.

Any raid-based guide written around the older “kill a captain, then enter a village” sequence is outdated for this Bedrock change. It should not be generalized to Java without checking that edition’s mechanics.

- Wrong edition or version: Confirm that the tutorial names your exact Java or Bedrock release.
- Player too far away: Normal spawners require the player to remain within their activation range.
- Mobs are stuck elsewhere: Search transport shafts, caves, ledges, and side chambers for living mobs.
- Competing spawn spaces: Light or otherwise address nearby caves and dark terrain, especially around surface towers.
- Bedrock death timing: In Bedrock, XP orbs appear after the mob entity disappears and its death smoke appears. A mechanism that leaves mobs alive or stalled can delay XP collection.
- XP is being collected incorrectly: Furnace XP may still be stored if hoppers remove the output before you manually take a result.
- The design is not actually universal: Portal, redstone, entity-killing, and spawning behavior can differ between Java and Bedrock.
XP levels are not the same as XP points
Experience levels have a nonlinear cost. Reaching level 30 once does not mean a farm produced twice as much XP as one that takes you to level 15 twice. Compare farms using XP points under stated conditions, not only the number of levels gained in a short test.
Protect accumulated XP as well. When a player dies, the dropped experience is worth seven times the player’s current level-equivalent experience, capped at 100 points—enough to recover up to level 7. Any remaining experience is lost.
Commands for testing or authorized worlds
Commands require cheats or the appropriate operator permissions. They are useful for testing a build, but they are not Survival farming methods.

/xp <amount> [player]Use a positive amount to add XP or a negative amount to remove it. The cited Bedrock reference does not provide Java’s /experience query subcommand, so do not copy Java command syntax into Bedrock.
