Is The Copper Age available on Java and Bedrock?
Yes. Mojang announced The Copper Age as Minecraft’s third game drop of 2025 and said it was free to play in Java and Bedrock editions. Players who already own Minecraft do not need to buy the drop; update the game to the latest version. Mojang’s availability announcement describes the release, and its Copper Age feature page outlines what it adds.

The update is also available on Nintendo Switch. Nintendo reported its Switch availability on 1 October 2025 in its announcement. That refers to the update for Minecraft on Switch, not a separate paid Copper Age edition.
What does The Copper Age add?
Copper equipment and building pieces
Copper became an equipment tier between stone and iron for durability and speed. The drop adds copper tools, weapons and armor, along with copper lights, chains, bars and other decorative blocks. The official feature page says copper equipment does not oxidize. Mojang and Nintendo describe the tier comparatively but do not provide numerical durability or speed values in the cited pages.

Shelves and hotbar item swaps
Shelves can display up to three items. Nintendo also describes using them with redstone to swap three items at a time from the hotbar, making them useful for changing a displayed set of items as part of a build or mechanism.
Copper golems and item sorting
A copper golem is created by the player: in Java Edition 1.21.9, place a carved pumpkin or jack o’lantern on a copper block. It takes items from copper chests and tries to deposit them in regular or trapped chests that are empty or already contain the same item type. This is a way to automate some sorting, not an unlimited storage-organizing system.

How copper golem sorting works in Java Edition
Mojang’s Java Edition 1.21.9 notes specify the following limits. These details are documented for Java; do not assume Bedrock uses identical values.
- Pickup: A golem carries up to 16 items per stack.
- Chest visits: It checks up to 10 chests in sequence.
- Search area: It searches up to 32 blocks horizontally and 8 blocks vertically.
- Valid destination: A regular or trapped chest must be empty or contain the same item type.
- Retry: If it cannot find a matching chest, it waits seven seconds before trying again.
These are implementation limits from the Java Edition 1.21.9 release notes. They help set expectations when laying out a sorting area: storage beyond the golem’s search range or outside its sequence of chest checks may not be reached in a given search.

What happens when a copper golem oxidizes?
Copper golems oxidize over time. Mojang says a fully oxidized golem that has not been waxed becomes a copper golem statue. Statues have four possible poses; Nintendo says their poses can produce distinct comparator signals, and describes waxing as a way to manage their appearance and behavior.
Mojang’s Java 1.21.9 notes say an axe can turn a statue back into a golem when the statue has no oxidation. For platform-specific interactions, consult the current notes for the edition you play.

Do I need to download The Copper Age separately?
No separate Copper Age purchase is required for players who already own Minecraft. Update the game to its latest version on your platform to receive the drop. On Switch, the update is for the base game; a reader who does not own Minecraft on that platform would need the base game, not a separate Copper Age edition.
