Minecraft’s first game drop of 2025 was Spring to Life, released March 25, 2025. It adds warm- and cold-biome animal variants, new sheep color patterns, six wolf sound sets, and environmental details across the Overworld. The Java Edition release is 1.21.5; the Bedrock Edition release is 1.21.70.
What is Spring to Life?
Mojang described Spring to Life as playable when it published its overview on March 25, 2025. The drop focuses on making familiar biomes feel more distinct through animal variety, ambient sounds, particles, and decorative blocks. Which animals changed?
Pigs, cows, and chickens vary by climate
Pigs, cows, and chickens now have warm and cold variants. The biome where an animal spawns determines which variant appears, including when a player spawns the animal. Offspring take their variant from their parents rather than simply adopting the biome’s variant at birth. Cold chickens lay blue eggs, while warm chickens lay brown eggs. These mechanics are detailed in the Java Edition 1.21.5 notes.
Sheep colors reflect biome groups
Sheep color probabilities now differ by biome group: white is common in temperate biomes, black in cold biomes, and brown in warm biomes. Other colors are still possible, including the rare pink sheep.

Wolves have more sound personalities
Wolves gained six additional sound sets: Big, Cute, Puglin, Angry, Grumpy, and Sad. Together with the original Classic set, that makes seven. A wolf receives its sound set at random, independently of its visual variant.

- Firefly bushes emit firefly particles in darkness.
- Leaf litter, wildflowers, and bushes add ground-level vegetation and color.
- Short and tall dry grass add texture to suitable environments.
- Cactus flowers add a new desert detail.
- Fallen trees can generate in four wood types: oak, birch, jungle, and spruce.
- Falling-leaf particles appear around leaf blocks that did not already have them.
- Desert and Badlands ambient block sounds make those environments sound more distinctive.
The Bedrock release notes cover generation, uses, and ambient sound behavior for that edition: Bedrock Edition 1.21.70. In particular, its notes explain that desert and Badlands ambient sounds come from blocks present in the biome, not from biome settings. Details can differ between editions, so consult the matching changelog for technical specifics.
