Build a Mini-ITX PC around the case, not just the motherboard. The case determines which board, graphics card, cooler, power supply, fans, and drives can physically fit—and whether you can assemble and cool them effectively. Before buying parts, compare each component’s exact dimensions and requirements with the specifications for your chosen case.

Start with your goals and the case

Decide what matters most: the smallest footprint, gaming performance, low noise, portability, storage capacity, front-panel ports, appearance, or room to upgrade. These priorities can conflict. A tighter case may limit cooler height and graphics-card dimensions; a somewhat larger compact case may offer more component choices and easier assembly. Volume alone does not determine cooling: ventilation, fan placement, component layout, and cable routing all affect airflow.

Choose a case early and check its manual or official specifications before selecting parts. Intel likewise advises that the case is “probably the best place to start” because it dictates available space. Intel’s small-form-factor PC guidance explains the broader planning considerations.

Record the exact case model and revision, then check its supported motherboard formats, GPU limits, cooler height, radiator positions, power-supply format and maximum length, fan mounts, storage mounts, and riser details. If support depends on a configuration or removable part, read the condition rather than relying on a headline specification.

Choose a compatible motherboard and platform

Mini-ITX is a common small motherboard format, but the board still needs to match your processor platform and case. Check the CPU socket, chipset, memory generation, BIOS support for the processor, and the connectivity you need. Compare the exact board’s M.2 slots and placement, Wi-Fi and networking, USB, audio, and expansion options.

Small boards offer less room for expansion than larger formats. The graphics card may take up the main full-size PCIe slot, so consider storage and other expansion needs before purchase. Confirm the exact motherboard model against the case’s support list or layout; do not assume that every compact case accepts every small board in every configuration.

  • 【ATX PSU】 ATX/SFX/SFX-L The power supply can be adjusted in multiple gears. It is recommended to check the picture for detailed introduction to prevent interference from different hardware. It supports SFX side mounting.

Check the graphics card’s full clearance

A card’s length is only one part of fit. Compare the exact graphics-card dimensions with the case’s limits, including thickness or width, slot count, orientation, bracket, and the space needed for its power connector and cable bend. A card can be shorter than the listed maximum and still collide with a side panel, another component, or the case’s structure.

  • Check the GPU maker’s dimensions for the specific model, not just the chip or product family.
  • Check the case maker’s diagrams and manual for card length, thickness, supported slots, and any layout conditions.
  • Allow for the power plug and cable where they face a panel or other component; published dimensions may not include connector clearance.
  • Consider airflow around the card and nearby parts, not only whether the panel closes.

Intel cautions that published card dimensions or case allowances may omit connectors and the bracket. MSI’s case-selection guide also emphasizes matching dimensions and layout to the selected case.

Match the power supply’s format, length, and capacity

Physical compatibility and electrical capacity are separate checks. First confirm the case supports the PSU’s form factor and length. Then make sure the PSU provides the connectors and capacity required by your specific CPU, GPU, and other components. Do not assume that every Mini-ITX build requires an SFX power supply; case designs differ.

For example, Fractal Design lists SFX and SFX-L support for its Ridge, while MSI lists ATX PSU support for the PRO FORGE M050A. MSI specifies a maximum PSU length of 170 mm for that particular case. Those examples illustrate why you should check the exact case rather than infer PSU compatibility from motherboard size. MSI’s PC-building checklist includes broad wattage examples for PC classes, but a class-level example is not a substitute for checking the requirements of your chosen graphics card and estimating the whole system.

  • Stylish Wood Front Panel with Modular Design: Features a walnut wood front panel and a modular structure, ideal for creating compact, clean, and minimalist PC builds.

Fit the CPU cooler, memory, and airflow together

For an air cooler, check socket support and maximum cooler height, then look for interference with memory, motherboard heatsinks, and the side panel. A low-profile cooler or RAM kit may be necessary in some layouts. For liquid cooling, verify the radiator size and exact mounting position, as well as conflicts with the GPU, PSU, and fans. A listed radiator size does not guarantee that every radiator-and-fan thickness combination will fit alongside your other parts.

Plan where air enters and exits, where fans mount, how dust filters can be reached, and how cables will route. A compact system can cool effectively when its case layout provides a suitable airflow path, but part density and restricted clearance make the specific combination important. Do not treat a case’s radiator or fan support as a guarantee of particular temperatures or noise levels.

Plan memory and storage around the board

Check the motherboard’s memory type, supported capacity and speed, and number of DIMM slots. Many Mini-ITX boards have two slots, so decide on your target capacity before buying. Where appropriate for the platform, a matched dual-channel kit avoids relying on a single stick simply to leave a slot empty; confirm the board’s support and the implications for your chosen system.

M.2 drives can reduce cable clutter, but check the board’s slot count, drive length and interface, heatsink arrangement, and slot location. A rear-mounted drive in a crowded layout may have less access to cooling. If you plan to use 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch SATA drives, confirm the case has mounting points and that the drives and cables will not obstruct the GPU, fans, or assembly access.

Use a case-specific compatibility checklist

Before placing an order, compare the exact part numbers rather than relying on broad product-family names. The MSI PRO FORGE M050A specifications provide one concrete example: this mini-tower lists Mini-ITX and Micro-ATX motherboard support, ATX PSU support, a maximum GPU length of 300 mm, a maximum CPU-cooler height of 160 mm, and a maximum PSU length of 170 mm. These are specifications for that case, not general Mini-ITX limits or a recommendation for the smallest possible build. See MSI’s PRO FORGE M050A specifications.

  • Case and board: Confirm motherboard format, dimensions, mounting, and any conditional support.
  • GPU: Confirm length, thickness, slot count, orientation, connector clearance, and cable routing.
  • CPU cooling: Confirm cooler height or radiator size and position, plus clearance around memory and board heatsinks.
  • PSU: Confirm supported form factor and length, then verify capacity and connectors for the system.
  • Memory and drives: Confirm board support, slot count, drive placement, mounts, and any clearance or cooling concerns.
  • Fans and assembly: Check fan mounts, airflow path, dust access, cable routes, and the order parts need to be installed.
  • Riser: If the case needs one, check the included riser’s generation and the case maker’s setup instructions.

Build and validate methodically

  1. Read the manuals. Use the instructions for the case, motherboard, cooler, GPU, and PSU before assembly.
  2. Plan installation order. In a tight layout, route cables and install parts in the order that provides access; some components may be easier to fit before the motherboard or GPU is secured.
  3. Install and connect carefully. Follow each component maker’s instructions, check that connectors are seated, and avoid forcing parts into constrained spaces.
  4. Follow case-specific riser guidance. If the enclosure uses a PCIe riser, use the case maker’s connection and configuration directions.
  5. Check operation before regular use. Confirm the system boots, detects its components, runs its fans, and maintains appropriate temperatures under the workload you intend to use.

When a PCIe riser changes the setup

Riser advice is specific to the case and riser, not a universal Mini-ITX setting. Fractal Design’s Ridge support page identifies the included riser as PCIe 4.0 and recommends setting the slot to PCIe 4.0 for stability in the stated scenario where both the GPU and motherboard support PCIe 5.0. The same page discusses past riser incompatibilities and a revised riser supplied to affected users, so owners should consult current support information for their exact unit. Fractal Design Ridge support information was modified on 2025-02-11.
